Barossa Valley Day Trip from Adelaide Including Gourmet Pizza Lunch

Adelaide, Australia

Visit South Australia's Barossa Valley on a day trip from Adelaide with a guide. Enjoy a wine tasting at the well known Jacob's Creek Visitor Centre, and visit four other cellar doors (aka tasting rooms) for more wine. Dine on wood-fired gourmet pizzas for lunch, and make stops at the Big Rocking Horse and the Whispering Wall. Tour is limited to 21 passengers in an air-conditioned minibus. Departs in the morning and ends in early evening.

Your day trip starts as you depart Adelaide by bus with your driver-guide, winding your way through the suburbs and scenic Adelaide Hills for an hour before stopping at Gumeracha, home to the Big Rocking Horse, proclaimed to be the world’s largest.

At this site, part of a complex with a café and Australia’s only remaining wooden toy factory, you can meet the resident kangaroos, goats, and alpacas before continuing your tour to Williamstown, the gateway to Barossa Valley. Visit the Whispering Wall (weather permitting; see below), a 9-story structure built in a perfect semicircle more than 110 years ago where it’s possible to hear someone whisper from one end of the wall to the other, 459 feet (140 meters) away.

Moving on, watching as gum trees are replaced by vine leaves, you’ll enter one of Australia’s largest and most celebrated wine regions. Your first stop is Jacob’s Creek, perhaps the country’s best-known winery and the largest wine exporter in the valley. Learn about the wines from a winery guide, who offers a selection of the popular shiraz, merlot, and rosé for tasting. Next visit Kies, a family-owned boutique winery where the setting is quaint and the service is personal. These top-notch wines are not available for sale elsewhere.

For lunch, head to Saltrams to enjoy gourmet pizzas, and then you’ll have the chance for a cellar door (Aussie lingo for ‘tasting room’) tour and tasting of a selection of their wines. Continue to the Mengler’s Hill lookout for views of Barossa Valley before heading to Wolf Blass, a winery that dates back to 1966 and is one of the country’s most-awarded wine brands. Enjoy a tasting of the wide range of varietals here before popping in at the fourth mystery winery.

Finally, relax and take in the views on the drive back to Adelaide, arriving in the early evening (at approximately 5pm).

Please note: The Whispering Wall is not available on days when there is a fire ban; the itinerary will be adjusted accordingly if you are unable to visit this attraction on the day of your tour.

Wonderful trip. Matt made the drive and the walk through the rainforest so informative and fun. We saw so much while relaxing and soaking up the beauty of the region. Kudos to Matt and the trip.

What a fantastic day we had. From the time we were welcomed onto the bus, till the time we got off it was like we were on a family outing. The driver / guide was happy and friendly which made to a thoroughly enjoyable and fun filled day. Such beautiful towns and scenery as we made our way to the first winery. The view from Mt Lofty was spectacular and the engineering of the Whispering Wall was unbelievable. Great coffee and morning tea at The Biggest Rocking Horse before our first stop at Jacob's Creek. Loved the character and charm of the family run Kies Winery. For all you port lovers I thoroughly recommend Lambert Estate with their amazing rich dark chocolate flavoured port. Make sure you leave plenty of room in your suitcase for a bottle. Love that you can have wine sent to you anywhere and get discounted prices on your favourite wine packages at Jacob's Creek. I chose a sweet package and get 4 mixed bottles sent to me every quarter for 40. Anyone fortunate enough to visit the beautiful city of Adelaide must take this tour. We enjoyed a beautiful lunch at Saltram, which consisted of an endless supply of the most amazing wood fired pizzas and beautifully dressed salad. A big 10 out of 10.
