Murray River Riverboat Tour including Lunch from Adelaide

Adelaide, Australia

Trade in the hustle and bustle of Adelaide for a day in the peaceful, picturesque Murray River region with this day trip to Mannum. Take a 2-hour cruise on the scenic Murray River, and enjoy morning tea and lunch on board while you spot birdlife like pelicans and cockatoos. Learn about Mannum’s paddle steamer history, and visit the Melba's Chocolate Factory in Woodside. Views of the Adelaide Hills will keep you entertained during the 3-hour round-trip coach ride.

After pickup from centrally located Adelaide hotels, head by coach to the town of Mannum, about a 1.5-hour drive through the rolling Adelaide Hills and the Mallee outback.

Mannum is a historical town on the river, where European settlement dates back to the 1840s and the first paddle steamer on the Murray River was launched in 1852. When you arrive, board the riverboat for your 2-hour cruise.

You’ll see just a small portion of Australia’s longest river but some of its best scenery, including stark cliffs, willow trees and the Red River Gums. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like galahs, cockatoos and pelicans, and enjoy morning tea and lunch served on board.

Afterward, enjoy free time to explore Mannum on your own, and visit a lookout point to admire the view over the city and river. Then hop back on the coach for the return drive to Adelaide, stopping in the town of Woodside to visit Melba's Chocolate Factory in Woodside, home to some of the world's most delicious confectionery. Enjoy a snack or drink, if you wish, at the cafe (own expense) before continuing the drive to Adelaide, passing through the Chain of Ponds to Tea Tree Gully.

Your tour ends with hotel drop-off in Adelaide.

The Murray River Riverboat tour was a very pleasant day. The two hour boat trip was tranquil and we enjoyed the hour we had in Mannum to wander the Main Street. We also enjoyed the cheese shop and the very large sweets shop.

Well, it's nice but there's really nothing to see. I've learned there's a tour of few days which let you sleep in the wild. That could be interesting. Otherwise

The driver was very knowledgeable and pointed out many interesting facts about the area as we drove through the lovely Adelaide Hills. The Murray Riverboat Tour was truely beautiful - a wonderful experience and a nice lunch was served. After the cruise we spent an hour in Mannum which was not particularly interesting - this is the only negative point about an otherwise excellent tour.

It was the tour guides first day on the job and he came through with flying colours. He was professional, very friendly and most informative on a whole range of topics and interests and made all on board very relaxed and comfortable throughout the days journey. This was our first visit to SA and this tour gave us the opportunity to have a look from a regional aspect to that of the city of Adelaide.

I can really recommend this day trip from Adelaide. The riverboat cruise was great, and the lunch was good with a lot of healthy options which I appreciate. If I could change one thing it would be to skip one of the stops on the way back and spend more time on the riverboat.

The Murray River is a must see .. I saw it with an awesome height to the river, as it was blackout South Australia and stormy weather time ... glad I got to experience that ... love the old buildings and university ... the buildings are big highrises so nice to be able to get around without being shadowed by the heights of buildings .. everything so close, the Zoo 11 mins walk from the motel, Rundle Mall 7 mins walk from the motel ryc

Despite the storm and the flooding around the Adelaide Hills this trip went ahead. We had an excellent tour guide and had a comfortable coach for our trip. The cruise on the Proud Mary was very enjoyable with a delicious lunch provided. The trip to Mannum and the Murray Bridge was also interesting. Due to the flooding we were unable to go to the Melba Chocolate factory but instead we were taken to look for Koalas, which was a bit of fun. All in all it was an enjoyable day.

Was quite disappointment with this trip. The cruise was meant to be three hours, was only just over 2hours, lunch was nice but adequate, morning tea was plain biscuits thought would be more after most had been on the bus since 8.30. Bus driver was great, gave great commentary and knowledge on the surrounding regions and river.

Excellent.very informative commentary.Mannum not worth 1.1/2 hour stop. Extra 1/2 hour on the river would be preferred.

A great day out , our driver was great and went out of his way to make the trip enjoyable and the scenery and boat ride was fabulous , our trip was to celebrate a birthday and the chef made a birthday cake which was 1st class , a highly recommended tour.

Enjoyable drive thru Adelaide hills to Murray River. Boarded the Proud Mary for 2hrs while guests went ashore for 2hr tour. VIewed the countryside along the riverbank and colourful cliffs while we ate a delicious buffet lunch of prawns, cold meats, salads and fresh fruit. Choc and cheese stop on way back.

This was a great day. The cruise along the river was very relaxing. The drive from Adelaide was interesting and the visit to the chocolate factory was a fun addition. Lunch on the boat was of great quality.

I booked this day tour for my seven year old twins - primarily for the visit to Gumeracha Toy Factory and the Giant Rocking Horse but the local tour operator tell me that has not been part of the itinerary for at least three years. Instead we did a pensioner luncheon river cruise with cheese and chocolate factory visit - but 7 YO don't like that sort of cheese and Melba's was not a patch on Haigh's where we went the previous day. Very disappointed, not value for money for kids - you need to up-date your website!

An excellent tour with a good guide, but disappointed that the itinerary on the return journey was changed without any explanation at all to a chocolate factory.

Appalling.... Of the 8 hours - you spend less than 2 on the boat - where you are welcomed by grumpy staff in dirty uniforms.... lunch - which was suspect to say the least - we decided to go hungry rather than risk it - is served at 11.25...... they need to get you off the boat before the real guests return from a shore trip for their lunch at 1.00. We spent a month touring Australia - had fab trips everywhere - except for this. Don't go on this trip...

Very disappointed with this day tour for which the prime attraction should be the Murray river according to the title. The short river cruise, advertised as 2 hours wasn't quite that long, was largely taken up with queuing for, and eating, a tasty but very early lunch so we didn't see too much of the river. The rest of the day was taken up with a considerable time in Mannum and a visit to the chocolate factory which was in reality more a large sweet shop. If you want to devote a day to seeing the Murray river there must be better ways to do it. The Proud Mary was having down time whilst the residential passengers were on a half day land-based tour so we were being used to fil the gap until the longer term guests returned. The saving grace for the day was our own visit to the river museum in the information centre at extra cost. Be sure to check that the itinerary fits your requirements before you book.

The travel for the tour was fine and on time. The places seen were good._br/_ The lunch was NOT good. I had to supplement it by finding more from shops in Mannum._br/_ No opportunity was given to ask for dietary considerations. Thus i will not be using any of your tours in the future.

Our bus driver/tour guide was great with lots of information about everything. The riverboat was lovely however lunch was a bit rushed. It was a shame we did not return to Adelaide on the advertised route no toy factory nevertheless, it was still a nice trip back. Nice to have someone else driving.

Hi_br/_ The trip was boring - could have been any river in any country - there was nothing to see on the banks other than dirt. The food was below average and the hostess was a grumpy unfriendly person. She complained when I gave her a 50 note and said she wished people would stop doing that. She should have been more prepared!

Interesting to see outside of the city, however I found the boat trip quite boring as the scenery was very repetitive and uninteresting. Lunch on the boat was excellent. I don't think this trip represents good value for money.

Too much time in the murray river town. The museum was a good visit. Lunch was good. Cruise on river should be longer. The rocking horse was a waste of time. Bus driver, she was excellent.

in my opinion the tour was very misleading, our group and many others expected more than a 2 hour boat ride while lunch was being served and eaten, morning tea was at 11.10am (coffee and 2 dry biscuits)20 mins later lunch was being served.10hrs of our time for 2 hour boat trip is just ridiculous and the wooden toy factory where 75% of items are made in china just doesn`t do it.the coach drivers commentary was none stop dribble.

Overall the day was very pleasant - helped by perfect weather. Bus trips both ways were fine and the bus driver provided lots of information along the way. I have to say though, that his personable demeanour whilst driving and giving the talk he clearly gives all the time, did not match his conduct at other times. He did not engage at all and was clearly just doing his job and didnt feel the need to extend the bonhomie to times when he wasnt required to. The hour and a half at Mannum after the boat trip was too long - 45 minutes would have been just fine. Food was nice, not sure about the morning tea. Boat trip was lovely. Anyway, my parents enjoyed the day and that's what it was all about.

A very relaxed day with an enjoyable river cruise and an excellent lunch. The morning coffee stop at strathalbyn was perhaps a bit short to see much of the town, whilst the after lunch time in Mannum was too long, given that there is little to see and it was very hot. The toy factory is great, but we just didn't have enough luggage space or weight allowance to bring all the things we liked back to UK!_br/_ Our driver was very good providing lots of information about the areas we passed through.

The cost was far to expensive for what was a limited menu. The coffee machine was a disaster and to be rebuked for not knowing hot water had to be drawn from an adjacent tap was an insult. Eating and viewing the scenery at the same time is not possible hence part of the attraction was reduced. The coach director was excellent but the 1hr stop in a rural village which was soulless added to a disappointing day. Reflecting on the day back home in the UK we would find it difficult to recommend the tour.

As this was a lunch tour table places for all guests is a vital component. Advised that a Vegetarian would be on board it would have been more appropriate that vegetarian protein would have been part of the meal. So to have to insist that some form of vegetarian protein be provided was a disappointment. Staff initially abrupt proved to be very helpful in the end. I hope this critique is taken as helpful as it is intended. The tour itself was very relaxing and the food for non vegetarian was delicious though trying to balance plate knife, fork and a glass of wine on ones lap was difficult to say the least. Thank you

The tour was quite ok, to expectations really, right up to the part where we were put to "roam" in downtown midwinter Mannum for an hour. An hour here! You are kidding. But wait, it got worse. We then got bussed to a nightmare "wooden toy factory" where not only is the factory out of bounds, quite a lot of the toys were made in China. We hated it, and we had kids. Heaven forbid to think about childless couples. Avoid.

Review by:   Chee Wan K,    February 2013 Review: 3 star rating: Worth doing
The boat tour itself was approximately two hours which cruise along a small portion of the Murray River and back. The tour also includes a stopover to visit the small town of mannum and the toy factory to see the world's biggest rocking horse.
