Akaroa, New Zealand

Download a vibrantly-narrated mp3 audio guide combined with a map detailing the area of your tour.

Nestled on the East Coast of the South Island, the quiet seaside town of Akaroa is best known for its volcanic hills and the dolphins that are found in the bay. On this self-guided audio tour, you will enjoy the tranquil setting and the stunning natural views along the harbour. You will also see the old lighthouse and learn about its interesting French history at the Akaroa Museum. Visit the town wharf, whale try pots, war memorial, corner of Lavaud and Balguerie, St Patrick's Catholic Church, the Old French cemetery, the giant's house, French forecourt and Rue Jolie. Known as the Paris of New Zealand this tour will delight and enthral all at your own pace.

During this interesting 40 minute self-guided audio tour you will learn about Akaroa's rich French history, beginning in 1840. See the grisly Whaling try pots, where in the early day’s whale blubber was boiled down for the valuable fat. Stroll along the idyllic beachfront and see the war memorial, The Gothic Tower, recognised as one of the most beautiful and striking monuments in the Country. At the corner of Lavaud and Balguerie various points of Akaroa's history can be viewed including Langlois-Eteveneaux Cottage, built between 1840 and 1841 which is one of the oldest houses in Canterbury.

Opposite the cottage, is the Bank of New Zealand building, present in Akaroa in some form since 1873. Behind the Bank of New Zealand, farther along Rue Balguerie, stands St. Peter’s Anglican Church. The white spire of this splendid Gothic Revival church can be seen as you advance along Rue Lavaud. From here you can also see the old Post office. The Turenne Dairy, formerly the Criterion Hotel and now one of the best loved cafés in town, is the oldest surviving hotel building in Akaroa and has been around since 1863. After that visit Akaroa Museum and St Patrick’s Catholic Church. You’ll also see the Old French Cemetery, The Giant’s House, The French Foreshore, Rue Jolie, The Old Lighthouse, and so much more. Your tour, your pace.
