2-Day Tour to Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon from Alice Springs

Alice Springs, Australia

Discover the beauty of Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and Kings Canyon on a 2-day tour from Alice Springs. Traveling with an expert guide, get a firsthand experience of this remarkable region on guided walks at Uluru, Mutitjulu Waterhole, Kata Tjuta, Walpa Gorge and Kings Canyon. Learn more about the Aboriginal peoples of the Red Centre of Australia at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, and watch the sunset over Uluru. Includes one night’s accommodation, two breakfasts, morning tea, two lunches, one dinner and all transportation.

During your 2-day tour of heritage-listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and Kings Canyon, travel by comfortable air-conditioned coach with a knowledgeable guide who shares informative commentary about the region’s history and culture.

Your tour includes all transportation, admission fees, accommodation, two breakfasts, stops for morning tea, two picnic lunches and dinner at the lodge. Your accommodation at the lodge consists of shared dorms with four beds, with the option to upgrade to private twin or single rooms.

Day 1: Alice Springs – Yulara (B, L, D)
Start with pickup from your Alice Springs hotel early in the morning and travel several hours through the scenic Red Centre of Australia to reach Uluru. Stop for breakfast along the way, then have morning tea at a lookout with great views of Atila (Mt Conner). Disembark at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park around midday and follow your guide around the base of Uluru to take in the massive rock up close. You’ll also see Anangu rock paintings and learn about the Anangu people.

Next head up a short track to the Mutitjulu Waterhole, where legends say an ancestral water snake named Wanampi lives. Savor a picnic lunch at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre and learn about the region’s Aboriginal culture and natural history. View the dome-shaped rocks of Kata-Tjuta as you walk through the Walpa Gorge. Before sunset, drive over to the Uluru viewing area to watch the changing colors of Uluru as the sun sets, and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or juice, and light snacks.

Back at the Outback Pioneer Lodge, all the fixings are provided for a barbecue.

Overnight: Outback Pioneer Lodge, Yulara

Day 2: Yulara – Kings Canyon – Alice Springs (B, L)
Leave Yulara early in the morning for the scenic drive to Kings Canyon, with stops along the way for a light breakfast and cup of coffee or tea. When you reach Kings Canyon, your guide leads you on the 3-hour Rim Walk. Take in a number of highlights including the Amphitheatre, Garden of Eden and the shear north and south walls. Your guide explains the geology of Watarrka, as this area is known. On the rim of the canyon, refuel with a picnic lunch while soaking up the spectacular views. The Canyon Creek Walk provides an easier alternative to the 3-hour walk if needed. In the afternoon, drive back to Alice Springs. Your tour ends in the early evening with drop-off at your hotel.

Did this trip in June 2016 with two of my sons and it was very good. Our guides were David and Miguel, who did a great job. You do have to travel a fair way in the bus, because Alice Springs is some distance from Uluru etc, but it's ok and you can rest. Uluru is amazing, almost unreal. Kata Tjuta is also fascinating. We watched the sunset light up Uluru, whilst David rustled up an excellent BBQ.

This tour was to be with Alice Wanderer. They had trouble filling the 2nd day so they did their best by upgrading that day to AAT Kings. But it turns out it was not an upgrade. Having done both back-to-back, alice Wanderer is light years ahead of AAT Kings in every way._br/_ The 1st day, with Mattie and Andrew as tour guides, was great. We really learned a lot about the region in general and the stops in particular. Their story-telling method was really refreshing. They were never boring and had answers to every question. Uluru and Kata Tjutu were every bit as awesome as expected. We never felt rushed. The bus was very comfortable. There were several food stops, all appreciated and at no extra cost. And supper on the barbie, along with champagne, at sunset viewing Uluru - how could one ask for more._br/_ The 2nd day of the tour, with AAT Kings was disappointing. The tour guides, although personable, didn't seem to have the depth of knowledge that Mattie and Andrew had. Most info was delivered in the form of a video - boring, something one could see at home. The tour had 50 rather than the 30 on Alice Wanderer. It made the events always feel rushed, the people herded. And they spent much more time trying to sell other tours than giving information about the tour we were on. The seats were not very comfortable and close together, like coach airplane seats. The only food provided was breakfast. No lunch, no morning and afternoon teas, not even water at some stops. Kings Canyon hike was beautiful but due to the large number of people, felt rather rushed and herded. The guides were good here, very safety conscience._br/_ If you are choosing between Alice Wanderer and AAT Kings, I would highly recommend Alice Wanderer. AAT Kings will always be our last choice. If both our days had been with Alice Wanderer, we would say we got our money's worth.
