Day 1: Amman - Madaba (D) 60 KM Depart for a visit and overnight stay at Madaba, the city of mosaics. The most popular and well known is the ancient mosaic map of Jordan and the Holy Land of the 6th century in Saint George Orthodox Church. The small modest Greek Orthodox Church built in 1896 houses a treasure of early Christianity. It contains many icons, also a number of rather good mosaics of its own for Madaba has, over the decades, become the mosaic-making capital of Jordan. A much older church once stood on the same spot hence the mosaic map, but it was destroyed by an earthquake. That quake damaged the mosaic too, as did several fires at different times in the past. You can still see the remains of two ancient pillars from the previous building: they just outside the front of the church building.
The map was crafted in AD 560, it has 157 captions (in Greek) depicting all the major biblical sites of the Middle East from Egypt to Palestine. It was originally around 15m to 25m long and 6m wide, and once contained more than two million pieces. Although much of the mosaic has been lost, enough remains to sense the complexity of the whole.
Day 2: Madaba - Amman (B) 60 KM After breakfast transfer back to Amman Hotel.
