Although the experience ended up to be fantastic, it was very confusing. We had arranged our own hotel and simply requested a ride from the Amman airport to our hotel in Petra. Then we had requested a separate trip to Wadi Rum from our Petra hotel that evening. Prior to leaving home on our trip we received an email from someone named Radwan saying it would be better to go directly from the airport to the desert in Wadi Rum. This did not make sense to us, but he was very insistent, so we said ok. Upon our arrival, we were very tired, having gotten up at 3am for an early flight. Our driver told us that Radwan, the owner of Red Rock Tours, had arranged our program for our two days in Jordan! This was news to us. We really wanted to go to the hotel to rest and change clothes before going into the desert for our 4X4 trip and dinner, but the driver said no, we were going directly, and for lunch instead of dinner! We reluctantly agreed, but said we really had wanted to be there for sunset and to see the stars in the evening. The driver made some calls to a friend of his, and arranged this. But it wasn't with Red Rock Tours, so Radwan was furious! There was a huge fight via multiple cell phones, all in Arabic, but it was clear to us that everyone was fighting over us and our tourist dollars. We had a fantastic time in the desert, into the evening, though. Then when we got to our hotel, at 10pm, we just wanted to finally be left alone, but ANOTHER Red Rock employee was there, apparently to facilitate our hotel check in. Lots more arguing ensued, now involving the hotel clerk. Since I had a prepaid reservation, I'm not sure what this was about, but assuming it was to try to get a cut of the hotel's money. We were so relieved to finally be on our own. I think this is a cultural phenomenon that you won't be able to address, but wanted you to know.
