Amsterdam Countryside Bike Tour Including Cheese Tasting and Clog Demonstration

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Leave the bustle of the city behind on a 4-hour countryside bike tour from Amsterdam. Take a leisurely ride along the banks of the Amstel River, passing green fields peppered with cows, quaint country villages and farmhouses. See a historical windmill and visit a farmhouse and factory, where you’ll sample some Dutch cheese and see how wooden clogs are made. Hear about local history and rural Dutch traditions, and admire the scenery of the city’s green spaces including Amsterdamse Bos, Beatrixpark and Vondelpark.

Meet your guide in central Amsterdam in late morning. Before you set off, listen to your guide present a brief historical introduction to the city, from its founding in 1275 up to the present day.
Then embark on a 13.5- to 15-mile (22- to 25-kilometer) ride to the outskirts of the city and the countryside beyond, taking breaks along the way so your guide can share information and interesting stories.
Hop on the saddle and cycle through Amsterdam, a bike-friendly city that’s known for its cycling culture. Wind through its narrow streets, along the charming canals and over beautiful bridges. Watch as the city sights begin to wane and are replaced by peaceful green pastures and quiet waterways.
Move along scenic paths on the outskirts of town and see a snapshot of a different side of Dutch life. Look out for colorful and funky houseboats, as well as people fishing and rowing in the water.
Pull over to take pictures of the iconic De Riekermolen windmill, one of only eight remaining authentic windmills in and around Amsterdam. Later, call into a local farmhouse, where a farmer will introduce you to rural Dutch traditions. Sample the delicious farm-produced cheese and watch a demonstration of how clogs are made, after which you might even get the chance to slip on a pair.
During the return trip to Amsterdam, glide through several of the city’s finest parks. Enjoy spectacular woodland scenery in Amsterdamse Bos Park, and soak up the serene atmosphere and lush beauty of Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest and most well-known park.
Arrive back in central Amsterdam in the afternoon, where you’ll return your bike and bid farewell to your friendly guide.

My husband and I recently took this bicycle ride tour into the countryside. It was a pleasant ride; however would have liked the chance to stop a few more times to take photos. Along the ride we saw horses, cows, many types of birds and more. Enjoyed stopping at the cheese/clog farm, but perhaps someone should educate the farmer about the “me too movement”.

We had a really fun time and enjoyed being out in the Dutch countryside. Our guide was female Mike who did a great job narrating and answering questions. It was good to get some exercise in on the trip.

Our guide Patrick was great. They broke us into small groups which made it easier to get around in the city as well as out in the country. You definitely should plan to bring water bottles (they give you the opportunity to refill them) and pack a lunch as you will be out for 4 hours for sure. They give you the chance to sit and eat your lunches at the farm. The farmer definitely has a 'unique' sense of humor but they warn you about him. Overall, a great time and so much fun to be on the bikes!

Can it get any better than getting exercise and learning about Amsterdam at the same time? Mateus, our guide , was extremely knowledgeable, charming and was very concerned about our safety and keeping our group together. We would recommend this group to all that enjoy biking while learning about the rich history of Amsterdam.

This tour was so much fun! I would highly recommend it. You learn a lot and you get to sample many cheeses. Riding through the countryside is a great way to see the life here.

We really enjoyed visiting the countryside by bike. The Cheese tasting and Clog demonstration session was super and very entertaining. The tour guide Mike was excellent! She was experienced in keeping the group together at the required pace and good fun as well.

Amazing time! It rained during our tour ponchos were provided- you would think this ruined the trip, but not at all. Our guide one of the Mikes had very amicable, he was full of insights, and very communicative about what the bike route was going to be. We kept a really steady pace and everyone in the group kept up nicely. We saw windmills, got a chance to try and buy cheese at the farm we stopped by, and we even visited a local biergarden they opened for our group! so it was really chill and got to buy snacks and try their brews. This tour was probably my favorite part of the trip.

We did this bike tour with Patrick not Swayze : and it was so much fun! He gave us good background history information without boring us with too many facts and the country side we rode through was beautiful. It was a pretty leisurely ride and didnt take someone incredibly fit. The local farm was neat as well. We got to pet and feed the cows and the cheese was absolutely delicious!! Highly recommend.

I would do this again. It was a fast pace and you will need to be assertive riding the bike in Amsterdam. The cheese farmer certainly loves little women. He was a character. The cheese and wooden shoe price was very reasonable. You should bring a lunch and bottled water with you. This is not a leisurely bike ride.

We loved this and would definitely recommend it to other travellers to the city. Our guide Pete guided us through the city into the surrounding countryside with stops for sightseeing. The cheese tasting was immense!

Mikes Bikes.....This was the most enjoyable day, we had a fantastic guide knowable but a lot of fun I thoroughly recommend this to all, we are over 70's and had the most fabulous day trip...go book it now you will have the best time !!!_br/_ There were about 40 riders but you are divided into groups of 10 each with their own guide, very comfortable riding NO hills in Holland !_br/_ Other than the Rijks Museum this was our favourite day.

Please do yourself a favor and take this trip. This was the highlight of our whole trip. We had about 17 people on our tour. There were three separate tours that went out to the countryside. The people ranged from 25-65 and varying degrees of health. I would say if you can walk around a city for a day then you can probably do this tour as it's pretty flat. They took us through the city and then out to a windmill and onto the farm. The farmer is slightly odd but harmless. He hands out cheese to the ladies and makes fun of men. Slightly weird but I highly suggest getting something from him as it's the best souvenir that you'll have. The trip ended with another view of a windmill and a stop at a local biergarden. This will be a new tour next year from what they were saying. The craft beer was awesome with the view of the windmill is one I won't forget.

The tour was wonderful! The country side scenes, the canal views, the clogg and cheese factory and the wind mills were all even pretier than we expected! The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The only one thing I would recommend Viator is to make it clearer on the tour description that this tour requires participants to be comfortable with riding through busy city traffic. To get to the advertised country side one has to ride 20 minutes from Amsterdam Central train station through busy streets and intersections. Not something I was prepared for as I rarely cycle in city traffic. The experience was quite something, glad to say I made it through without an accident. My mistake, I should have realized this when I booked the tour.

Very fun experiencing Amsterdam by bike. The bikes were super comfortable and nobody_br/_ had a problem peddling the 16 miles. The country tour was more just outside of town. The cheese tour was okaywe had been forewarned that the cheese guy was eccentric and that was an understatement. He wa s a bit odd. Our guide, Diego, was great.

My favourite tourist experience of my trip! Bicycling is a serious business here in Amsterdam, and getting a taste of this local way of life while seeing different parts of the city and country side was unreal. Girl Mike was our super cool guide who was all lively and good vibes making for a great tour - Thank you!

This was my favorite tour of our whole 2-week trip! Our guide Aaron and the guys in the shop were really fun to be around. Aaron was charismatic, knowledgeable and clearly loves what he does, which are great assets to have as a tour guide. The bike ride was fun and the views were awesome. When we got to the cheese and clog farm, the dairy farmer there was hilarious and made the tour of the farm engaging and interesting. Knowing the tour was a whole 4 hours I was a bit apprehensive, thinking that would be too long for a single tour, but honestly the time flew by and it was fun the entire time! Thanks for the awesome day :D

This was a great tour and Daniel did an excellent job of giving plenty of information and background on all the various highlights of Amsterdam. It made the trip that much better hearing the history of how the city developed. The stop at the farm was a good experience to learn about cheese making and clog making... however the farmer weirded me out and I don't even have any daughters. Someone should talk to him. Other than that, it was one of the best things we had done on our trip.

This tour did not disappoint!!! Totally enjoyed the Countryside tour. We cycled along the Amstel River taking in the spectacular sights and visited a Cheese farm with a very entertaining farmer. It was my favorite stop on the tour. Though the tour was 4 1/2 hours , our guide, Mathias, paced us so well, we didn't feel rushed or tired. He was an excellent tour guide, engaged with the group, made us feel capable, safe and kept us interested with his knowledge of the city and it's history. This is a must do when in Amsterdam..

Gosh, this bike tour was wonderful! It lasted over 3 hours....and our guide was fantastic Sam. I think he said we cycled 30 kilometers....but most of it was level country roads alongside the river. I'm 65, and did OK, so if you are worried about the distance....don't!_br/_ Highly recommended!

We enjoyed the countryside biking. However, on the way back into the city the tour guide got too far ahead of the group and some of us got separated and then didn't know where we were supposed to go. On our way back it was too congested in town for people who aren't used to those biking conditions. We wouldn't take a bike tour again....perhaps rent bikes on our own. It was too difficult to bike with such a large group of people.

The tour was great. We had some difficulty navigating through the locals in Amsterdam and a flat tire before reaching the countryside, but our guide, Diego, did a great job of getting us all through it. The ride's most difficult parts related to high winds and local traffic. The views were wonderful even with a little rain, the cheese/clog farmer was amusing, and the cheese was delicious. I would suggest bringing your own water or buying one before leave from the Mike's Shop 1 and snacks as 4 hours can be a while without food.

My favorite experience of the 3 weeks I spent in Europe! Tour guide, Pete, was informative, funny, and attentive. Was a little anxious I wouldn't be able to cycle for 4 hours considering I am 43, out of shape, and hadn't bicycled in about 3 years also anxious that it might be too much for my 12 year old. Before leaving, Pete gave a safety overview and offered any help we needed in making adjustments to our bikes. He reassured us that he would pull us from the tour and refund our money if he didn't think we were capable of handling it. I felt completely comfortable and safe under his judgment and guidance. The cheese and clog making demonstrations were interesting and offered a refreshing break just when one was needed. My daughter and I had a blast! It was a nice break from plane, train, taxi, and bus rides!

The guide could of been a little more informative and friendly. Unfortunately the group we were with decided to not heed his warning to stay in a single file, which caused a bit of aggravation to other riders and locals. We did see some very cool things but getting back into town, the group was separated and the guide continued with half the riders stuck in traffic and unable to get across the street leaving us to fend for ourselves getting back to the bike shop

Absolutely brilliant! Didn't stop smiling for 4 hours! _br/_ A really wonderful tour . We are not seasoned cyclists in fact I've been out on my bike since we got back - as it's given me the bug to start riding! We managed well, it was a little tiring towards the middle, but then after the visit to the farm, we were energised and ready to ride again. _br/_ Great bikes - very comfortable and a bit of knowedge about how to work the gears etc. _br/_ Some hairy moments in the town - it's hard to cycle round a city with so many bikes, pedestrians, cars and trams - but actually being part of a group makes it a bit easier. We had no clue where we had right of way, so maybe a little bit of knowledge about that would have been helpful! ha! But nobody had any accidents - so that was good_br/_ The cheese and clog factory was lovely and very authentic - nice people. _br/_ The Countryside was lovely, and we even saw some baby deer. _br/_ The windmill was also fab to see. _br/_ our tour guide was really good, and rode in clogs which was impressive!!! _br/_ 100 worth the money and the time. _br/_ One small tip - Take some fruit and maybe some rolls- you get cheese tasting in the factory, but it's 12-4 and nowhere to buy lunch. We had our rolls with the cheese, and also take a drink too! _br/_ There is a spar shop near the bike shop.

This was a great way to get out on a bike in Amsterdam. Our guide Daniel was AWESOME and made sure everyone on our tour was safe and having a good time. You do need to be fairly comfortable on a bike for this ride as there is some riding in traffic in busy Amsterdam before you get out to the countryside..... Cheese/Clog factory was interesting and a nice stop for a rest and lunch. bring your own _br/_ Highly recommend if you want to get out in the fresh air away from the bustling city for a few hours.

Awesome bike tour with girl Mike and owner Mike. It was a small group and we got really lucky with the weather, but overall the tour was a lot of fun. We saw 3 windmills, cheese farm and clog making demonstration and ended the tour at a brewery I don't know if this is always the case, or just because it was a small group.

This was a fantastic experience! First off, I haven't rode a bike in like 15 years so that was a concern of mine. Our guide and the bike company took time to make sure that I was on a proper bike, and also that I was comfortable before going out. Our guide also stated that at any time if she felt I was not riding safely she would send me back, and did appreciate that. All in all, I ended up doing well and having a wonderful experience. Seeing Amsterdam on a bike is how it is meant to be seen I think. The city riding was a bit more challenging, especially for this novice, but if I could do it, I think anyone could. Once you were out of the city, the path was a nice quiet path along the river. We rode to a windmill and then to a cheese farm. The farmer was very welcoming and funny and the cheese was delicious. After we took another side tour to a brewery in a windmill since our group was very small, only 3 people the last tour of the season in November 2016. It was a wonderful day that I still talk about. I would definitey recommend this experience.

The biking was excellent - it is very surprising how quickly you can get out of Amsterdam. The guide was also informative without being pushy. The cheese and clog shop I could have done without - it was like the shop at the end of the museum, and very touristy. However, lots of people on the tour bought things there, so my opinion was obviously not shared:

Great tour. Mike's Bikes are the best. My husband was able to make the entire trip, but when they noticed I was struggling a bit we're seniors they suggested I turn around and go back after the farm at my own pace. They even sent a guide from the shop to accompany me. I probably could have made it, but I didn't want to slow the rest of the group down. Had it only been a few people, I would have continued on. They never made me feel bad about it. Good people.

A must do in Amsterdam!! Mike is funny, full of energy, and has an incredible grasp on the history of the areas through which you ride. She expertly guides you through the busy streets of the city and out into the gorgeous countryside, all at a manageable pace. The bikes are in great condition, and come with pouches for you to put small personal belongings in. We've traveled extensively and this tour is one of the best we have ever taken! The bike shop is easy to find, clean, and organized and all of the staff are super friendly and helpful. We plan on returning to Mike's if we're ever in Amsterdam to rent bikes and explore on our own. There is time to have lunch when you stop at the cheese farm, so I recommend bringing a light lunch or snack, as well as a bottle of water.
