Amsterdam Jordaan District Food Walking Tour

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Taste Amsterdam’s culinary specialties on this 4-hour walking tour of the historical Jordaan district. Following a passionate foodie guide, visit some favorite local food shops and eateries to eat like the Dutch do, from smoked sausage to gouda to herring. Learn about Jordaan’s history and culture along the way. Numbers are limited to 12 on this small-group tour, ensuring a more personalized experience.

Meet your guide in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district, right outside of Café de Prins. Come hungry, as the tastings you’ll enjoy today add up to a satisfying meal.

Once a working-class neighborhood, Jordaan is now a sought-after area full of specialty shops, inviting cafes and world-class restaurants. Walk along canals and past historical buildings and off-the-beaten-path cultural attractions on your way to some favorite local haunts, where you’ll meet the people keeping Dutch food traditions alive.

Visit eight authentic food shops and eateries, and enjoy 12 tastings of Dutch specialties such as licorice, smoked sausage, herring, gouda cheese and bitterballen (fried meat balls), and try some unique Dutch food with an Indonesian flare.

In between stops, your guide — a passionate foodie and expert local — will entertain you with stories and insights into Amsterdam’s history and culture. Pause in front of Anne Frank House, find some hidden churches and discover what used to be in the Jordaan area hundreds of years ago.

With a happy belly and loads of interesting Amsterdam insight, your tour concludes near the start point, by the Amsterdam Tulip Museum.

This was a wonderful tour and our guide was terrific. He provided great local knowledge of food, customs and history and blended it all together to keep us engaged. The stops on the tour included little pancakes, herring, local sausage and beef, local baked goods, food from Surinam, a popular pub snack and apple pie. Moved at a great pace. Totally full at the end but such great bites and plenty of ideas of places to go back to. Wouldn't hesitate to do another food tour with this group or an art tour with our guide.

Renee was an absolutely amazing tour guide. He was very warm and friendly. We were able to see Jordaan through his eyes! He was extremely knowledgeable! I’ve been on many tours and this by far stands out as Top 5, the food the culture, very intriguing. This tour is a must! You won’t be let down.

A very enjoyable tour although more than a little difficult to find starting point if this is your first visit to Amsterdam. The tour guide was kind enough to allow us to start our tour at the second restaurant. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and choices of restaurants offered a nice variety of foodstuffs. All in all I would definitely recommend this tour to get a nice overview of Amsterdam's cuisine.

Estephan was very welcoming, informative and gracious. He had to call ahead to places to provide some gluten-free option for my wife since the Viator phone operator failed to record my gluten-free request. We were treated to alcohol and food samples from the region in many little Jordaan shops. The best part was eating foods we'd never sampled and hearing some history for the first time from a native of Amsterdam.

We travelled as a family of 4 and had a great time! Rene was our guide and he gave us so much interesting information about Amsterdam, the typical food and a lot of insider stuff. His English and German is fluent. This tour was just the perfect start for a three-day- Amsterdam-Tour.

The food was very good and our guide explained the connection to the Dutch culture. Thijs, our guide, also include many cultural, architectural and fun facts. It was a great way to get to know Amsterdam!

This was our third food tour and have decided to do a food tour on each of our European trips. The tastings were varied and introduced us to a lot of the Dutch cuisine. Did not think that I would like the herring but was pleasantly surprised.

This was a great tour! We learned so much about Amsterdam -- not just the typical touristy things. The food was plentiful and diverse -- arrive hungry! We took the whole family and it was one of the highlights of our 10 day trip through Europe. Highly recommended!

We had the great pleasure to tour with Aileen, discovering the many tastes of the district, its rich history and quirky traditions. The food was delicious and varied. She accommodated my vegetarian spouse at each site too. She genuinely loves the history, being Dutch and everything the area has to offer. We ended up going back to several of the stops. The only complaint: too much food... and is that really a problem? The walking is easy, flat and accessible. Thank Aileen!

The tour was good, I have done much better food tours in London and Rome. This may have more to do with the nature of Dutch cuisine. The stops were no where as good as the type of stops I did on other food tours. The only memorable stop on the tour was for apple pie. The guide was informative, fun, and made the tour worthwhile.

Excellent tour, very interesting and terrific guide. Due to a booking error, she was late arriving - within 2 minutes of her arrival, absolutely no-one was worried about the wait. She was such a good guide. Highly recommend this tour.

While I'm late in writing this review, this tour was one of the best in our recent trip to Amsterdam in June. The multiple stops on the adventure really gave us a unique perspective on the foods in the area. From the herring to the chocolates and everything in between. I highly recommend this tour. I only am sorry,I am forgetting our guides name who was very knowledgeable.

The food was introductory to what food is indigenous to Amsterdam or what locals are. I loved this tour. I wish it was available more days so I could have taken it on the 1st day and learned where to go back and eat. Great tour guide.

Food was fantastic, diversified and delicious. Our guide was fun and informative. The 1.5 mile walk took us along the canals and winding thru the cobblestone streets and alleys of the Jordaan district. We sampled pancakes, herring, sausage, cheese, bitterballen and Dutch apple pie, among others. Well worth it

Our guide was great - very knowledgeable and friendly, and made it a great experience for everyone in the tour. If we had any complaint it would be that there was too much food!! The venues chosen for the tastings were perfect, and the walk around Joordan was very pleasant.

We would highly recommend this tour, you will not be disappointed. Our guide,Peter was very good and knowledgeable about the area. We tasted many authentic food of Amsterdam and the Netherlands. _br/_ We started with poffertjes small sweet pancakes and had haring and kibbelings, sausages, cheeses, chocolate, bitterbollen, and of course, beer. It moved along well and we covered quite a distance with stops to tell us history of the Jordaan neighbourhood.

This tour was fantastic! I wish we could have made time for it sooner, since we went on our last day in Amsterdam, only to discover so many lovely places to eat and shop. The guides gave a great mix of walking, history, and food stops. You won't leave hungry! It was great to experience the local food culture with someone there to show you what and how to order. I'd recommend this to any adventurous foodies.

A really great way to see a very cosy and interesting neigbourhood. A small group meant that it was easy to talk to everyone and get to know people. Our guide, Arlene, was super friendly and knowledgable. I felt very well looked after. There was a great variety of food stops and I learnt so much history as well! What an experience to sit in a 400 year old cafe eating the best apple pie in the world then finding out that Bill Clinton is a regular there!

Amazing! The group, the food and the guide! I was a single traveler and the guide was very accommodating. Her focus was on the group as a whole and being a single traveler I never felt alone._br/_ The food! OMG! YUM! And the extra surprise was an exclusive canal tour in a luxury vessel once used by Royalty. Champagne and cheese! _br/_ I would recommend it to everyone!

As a food professional, I loved this tour. Great tastings, great history lessons, and lots of walking to keep the calories of the 13 tastings off the tummy. It was perfect. Do this the first day or two while in Amsterdam so that you can get a feel of the district which is filled with fantastic restaurants, shops and history. Our guide the 6'8 guy was fantastic and loves his job.

This is a great walking tour that takes you to a lot of different places about 9 in a 4-hour walking tour through the Joradaan. You'll visit a fabulous cheese shop, enjoy bitterballen with beer, and try Indonesian food, among lots of other more traditionally Dutch food such as herring, licorice candy, pannekoeken dutch pankcakes, apple pie it's true!, and sausages. There is a good amount of walking between the various stops, so it's possible to complete this tour without getting too too full, if you're very careful.

My husband and I completed this tour with no real expectations and we were extremely satisfied with the tour and the guide Aileen. There was sufficient food and every single one were delicious. We were not a fan of the cheese and licorice but other than that we had truly enjoyed walking the Jordaan district.

For anyone looking to get a feel of Dutch cuisine, this tour is excellent. When I took the tour, our guide was great - informative and entertaining. The tour lead us to see the beautiful sights of the Jordaan District that we might not have stumbled on ourselves. The food was delicious and the portions were very generous so definitely come hungry.
