Amsterdam Super Saver: Windmill and Tulip Day Trip to Zaans Schans, Marken, Volendam, and Keukenhof

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Enjoy a Super Saver tour that combines the best of the Dutch countryside – windmills, fishing villages and flowering tulips – all in one day! With a local guide, visit a clog maker in the windmill town of Zaanse Schans, and then take a boat ride to the quaint fishing villages of Volendam and Marken to see cheese made the traditional way. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Keukenhof Gardens, where the beautiful seasonal displays of springtime bulbs will take your breath away.

Zaanse Schans Windmills, Marken and Volendam Half-Day Tour (5 hours):
From the Damrak in Amsterdam, just a 3-minute walk from Central Station, board your comfortable coach for a scenic drive to Zaanse Schans. Admire the Dutch countryside as you head out of the capital city, passing a picturesque landscape of wooden houses and windmills.
When you arrive in Zaanse Schans, your professional local guide will inform you about this charming village, renowned for its 17th- and 18th-century buildings that vividly depict historical Dutch life. First, tour the town and enjoy up-close photo ops of its famous windmills. Then, see the clog-making skills of a Dutch shoemaker as you learn about woodworking techniques first hand.
Next, enjoy a 20-minute boat ride to Volendam and Marken, renowned fishing villages where traditional wooden houses stand on stilts. You can purchase lunch in Volendam while you take in the lovely scene and admire the colorful Dutch dresses that some of the women still wear. Then, follow your guide to a local cheese factory for a demonstration and delicious tasting of cheese crafted in the traditional way.

Following your Zaanse Schans Windmills, Marken and Volendam tour, you'll have 30 minutes of free time in Amsterdam to relax and have lunch (own expense) before embarking on your afternoon Keukenhof Gardens tour at 2:30pm.

Keukenhof Gardens and Tulip Fields Tour (5 hours):
Back on board the coach, make the drive to Keukenhof Gardens, taking in the spectacular sight of Holland’s fields awash with colorful tulips, at their peak in spring. At the gardens, enjoy three hours of free time to explore more than 80 acres (32 hectares) of seasonal displays that include seven million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.
Make sure to take plenty of photos along the footpaths, admiring the interesting sculptural pieces and other works of art amid the memorable flowers before heading back to the city aboard your coach.

It was a long day, but we wanted to pack a lot in the short time we were in Amsterdam. We felt it was definitely worth it.

Super amazing wonderful! Go during spring April May to see the tons of flowers in Keukenhof Gardens. I was stunned how many flowers there were! The windmills were great to visit since we both got the wide panoramic views and got to learn how wind mills pressed out oil out of seeds. The smokey goat cheese from the cheese factory was excellent, and it was so cool to see a demonstration of how clogs are made. A fantastic trip!

This is a really full day! Everything was quite interesting and we are glad we saw and experienced it all, however, we would have like more time in some of the places. Had to move very fast. Our guide was terrific. We were in Keukenhof the last week it was open and although some of the planting beds had been taken out it was still a fabulous experience. Only gave four stars because of the hurried nature of the day.

First you should know we took two tours in one day. Far too much for our age and relatively good health. Our guide was delightful and very helpful on the Zaans Schans, Marken and Volendam part of the day. We enjoyed each stop and learned much. We bought cheese in Volendam at the delightful cheese factory and then had to carry it all over Keukenhof Gardens. We had the best Belgian Waffle in Volendam that we had during our Amsterdam stay. We loved the windmills and shoe factory. The bus ride is long and slow but the driver skillfully manipulated those tiny roads.

My travel mate and I enjoyed our trip, it was a long day and maybe there was not enough time for everything. The Kuekenhof Gardens were great and should not be missed. We loved the Zaans Schans Windmills but feel that there was not enough time to enjoy the area. We are from Holland Mi, which celebrates Tulip Time with authentic Dutch Costumes so we wanted to see Marken and Volendam. Both areas were great and would have loved to spend more time at each location.

This was an awesome tour! Our guides were punctual, knowledgable, and gave plenty of time to meander through various points on the tour. Keukenhof was definitely the highlight for me! Who knew that there were so many different types of tulips! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Amsterdam and would absolutely take this tour again myself!!

Great way to see the countryside in a day. Bus was very comfortable. Guides were knowledgeable. Lunch very good and Keukenhof Gardens is a must see. Worth the price and the time.

What a fabulous day trip this proved to be. We could never have seen so much and had so much fun without the good organisational skills of Viator. Everything we saw and did was excellent. It took us a long time to get to see Keukenhof gardens in the afternoon though because the traffic was really awful. However, our trip was not cut short and we were picked up later from the gardens, which did mean that we almost had them to ourselves! I would definitely do the trip again. The gardens were absolutely fantastic. I took many photos.

The Tour was awesome .However in the beginning the person from Viator who was taking us to the bus was least bothered to check if all the passengers were able to follow him or not. That was something my husband and I were not happy about. Besides that, the tour was very good. Highly recommended.

The excursion was very interesting, little time for the shops, lose a lot of time in the cheese shop, as they give a talk and then it is that the whole group goes to the store to try the cheeses and buy, then there is no time to Visit the souvenir shops. The recommendation of Edgar Beer regarding the restaurant was excellent, very good treatment, good food and abundant portions. Good explanations and vast knowledge of the areas visited by the guides. Carol, who has knowledge of several languages. They gave the explanations in English and Spanish

The Good: there was plenty of time at Keukenhof enjoying the grounds on your own. _br/_ The Annoying: the group size was way too big for the half day out at the windmills, cheese factory, clog making demo part. Way too big! you spent more time waiting for the group to catch up and gather around then learning/listening to anything. Your free time to explore each area on your own was extremely limited at each place and continued to be cut down as the day progressed because people wouldn't be back at the bus at the scheduled time. It was messy. I recommend this tour if you can find it in a small group version.

This is a full day tour and worth the money you pay because you get to see alot._br/_ We started with Keukenhof Gardens first, then to Windmills, Volendam Cheese Factory and finally Marken._br/_ Its one of the typical place to cover when you're in Amsterdam._br/_ All the places we go are popular, so expect it to be crowded._br/_ You need to squeeze in to take photos and hard to get a shot without a stranger in it.

Very nice trip. I felt like we had enough time at each location. Keukenhof is beautiful, don't miss it if you're there when it's open. The windmilds are very nice and interesting, and you get to go on top of one of them. The other two towns are very pretty. Marken has a lot of shops and restaurants but Volendam is more quiet and you get to ride a boat to get there. I would definitely recommend this tour to see all of this attractions in one day.

This was an excellent tour. We spent just the right amount of time at each location. I only wish we could have gone directly to Keukenhof instead of having to return to Amsterdam and leave again second tour.

Don't do it. The tulips which are beautiful , can be visited by taken public transport and once there, you get a map and stroll around, You don't need a tour bus. As for the Windmills, I suggest you find another way of getting there, during peak season. We were crammed into a super packed double decker bus and raced around the villages. Jammed into a tiny windmill but there were too many off us to see anything, then raced back to the bus. Then jammed into cheese shop for a presentation not a demonstration then raced onto bus, buy your lunch quickly, run through the village, take some photos and catch a boat. Race through one clog demonstration: Want to buy clogs ? Forget it Run for the bus! Too many people for one tour. The guide was stressed about getting us through it and we got stressed trying to meet her needs and not being late and missing the bus and leaving us behind, which they said they would. Frankly I don't know what I saw. Disappointing and it is my first viator dissapointment ever. I felt that it was just greedy of the tour company to push so many people through this tour, next time choose a small tour or try public transport.

Windmill and Marken: the tour started at 9 am, and our tour guide is very nice. The windmill tour and the clog making tour are very informative. However, it is too rush that not enough free time to walk around. _br/_ Volendam: the tour includes a boat tour from Marken to Volendam. It was a relaxing tour, about 30 minutes. The cheese factory tour is nice. _br/_ Keukenhof: Although we came to the garden in the beginning of the season, It is a beautiful garden. Suggest to come in mid of April, more flowers bloom.

This was the 2nd Viator tour we've taken. The first was to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks from Salt Lake City which was very enjoyable. This one was truly extraordinary. Keukenhof Gardens are only open two months out of the year. We were lucky enough to be in the area during this time. There were over 7.5 million tulips in bloom at the gardens. We could have spent all day just wandering around there. But the windmills, Volendam and Marken were also well worth seeing. The Netherlands would not have been complete without this tour. I highly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to take advantage of this offer. Our guide spoke excellent English and arranged things to best accommodate the passengers.

A wonderful tour of typical Netherlands sights - more than we expected. The guides were knowledgeable and we had ample time to explore sights on our own. The time spent at Keukenhoff was magical because it was a beautifully sunny day and crowds were not as large as we anticipated.

There was not enough time spent at the windmills. I barely made it onto the bus after walking around the path. There was some pressure to purchase cheese in the shop that we were brought to.

Review by:   gjgrabowski,    June 2016 Review: 1 star rating: I do not recommend this
Very poor check-in at the local tour agency. Took more than a 1/2 hour to check-in paper copies of purchase receipts, to get another paper copy to go to the bus with. Don't understand why scanned copies of purchase documentation couldn't be used, along with wireless scanners, to speed up the process!! Also, very, very limited number of washrooms, for the volume of people. Zaanse Schans windmill stop was nice. Good to see authentic working windmill. Volendam cheese making was a waste of time. Only purpose was a front to sell cheese. The 'help' to lead us to the Viator approved restaurant seating for lunch was not necessary. Sort of overpriced. There are other available options. The boat ride to Marken was ok. It was a rainy day.. The Marken clog making demo was again only a front to corral everyone, in hopes to sell souvenirs. The afternoon trip to Keukenhof was ok. Remember that this is only a transfer to and from the gardens. The gardens themselves were good. Overall, not good value for what you spend!! Note to other travellers, please ensure when you are reviewing Viator reviews, to change from ' Traveler rating ' which gives all the great reviews first ' Most recent ' to get more of a balanced view of the product you are thinking of purchasing .

It was very lovely. Though the tour of the windmills, cheese factory and the wooden shoes we felt it was too rushed. It was alot to cover in such what we felt a few hours. The schedule was very tight. Had to rush down the lunch. The windmills we felt we could of used more time. Maybe it could be split into 2 days. The Keukenhof Gardens was beautiful and we had ample time to walk through the gardens.
