Eat Like a Local in Amsterdam: Traditional Dutch Meal in a Local Home

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Gain insight into local culture during an authentic home-cooked meal with a Dutch host. Go shopping with your host, then enter their home, located in a historical building in the pretty Jordaan district of Amsterdam. Hang out in the kitchen and chat as they whip up a traditional Dutch dish. If you wish, help out with the preparation and cooking. Once the food is ready, sit down for a casual and intimate meal, where you’ll eat, converse and discover more about the local way of life.

Meet your accommodating host at midday in the Jordaan district, an old working-class Amsterdam neighborhood that is now known for its art galleries, canal houses and picturesque urban scenery. Let your host show you around the area, pointing out things you may never have noticed by yourself, and perhaps even stop to pick up ingredients for your meal.
Continue to your host's home, which is situated in a converted 14th-century monastery. Join your host in the kitchen as they start preparing the food. While the meal is always different, you might taste local specialties such as pannekoeken, a popular local pancake that can be served either savory or sweet.
If you're a keen chef, help out with the chopping and cooking. Alternatively, just chat with your host as they explain more about Dutch cuisine. Once the food is ready, take a seat at the table. As you eat, swap stories about your experiences of Amsterdam and hear about day-to-day life in the Jordaan district.
After your leisurely meal, gather up your stuff and prepare to leave. Your host will point you in the right direction to your hotel or next destination.

Our host served pre-prepared food she had purchased in a grocery store. Some she said we could expect if we ate in a bar. There were 5 in our group and she might have spent the amount one of us paid for the home cooked meal for the food she served. Visiting about culture, etc. was interesting, however the food was marginal. Overall it wasn't what we expected. In contrast, my group had a wonderful experience in China when we participated in a similar experience.

A wonderful way to spend the afternoon the the Jordaan. Our host was very kind, very accommodating, and a wealth of local information. We did this on our first day in Amsterdam, which was exactly the right time - a good primer, and were able to get lots of good recommendations about what else to do during our stay.

We were a little disappointed because we expected to have a meal in a dutch person's home and instead were met by a man who was originally from the US and in fact lived in the same state that we are from. The shopping experience was good, but we were concerned about the sanitary aspect of the preparation as Shawn would wash his hands and then blow his nose and continue to prepare the food.

This was great we got to meet a local and have lunch in his home. He was very friendly and showed us lots of secret places in his area. It was really lovely to actually just meet a local person and chat with him, we saw a different side to Amsterdam not just the touristy stuff.

This tour was a top Amsterdam experience for me. The host was relaxed and personable and full of interesting facts. The meal was delicious, and getting to know the neighborhood and its hidden gardens was a nice bonus. This is a perfect tour for a "people person" who wants a unique experience.

Small group walking tour of Jordaan District. Many of the gardens were closed since it was Sunday. Had delicious Dutch cheese pancakes for lunch. David was a knowledable local with good information of the district.
