Private Tour: Amsterdam City Walking Tour

Amsterdam, Netherlands

This private walking tour shows you some of Amsterdam’s highlights from a local's perspective. With a knowledgeable private guide by your side, learn about the city's traditional houseboat culture at the Houseboat Museum, see the Van Gogh Museum in the famous Museum District, enjoy typical Dutch snacks, and wander Albert Cuyp, the largest street market in the Netherlands. You'll also see the Anne Frank House and Vondelpark.

You’ll be picked up from your Amsterdam hotel or Dam Square at your pre-determined time and taken to the tour starting point. This tour can be taken in English, French, German, Spanish or Portuguese; simply advise at the time of booking which language you prefer.
Start with a tram ride to the Jordaan district, a former working class area that’s now an upscale hub full of students, art galleries, specialty shops and markets, as well as some of the city’s main attractions, including the Anne Frank House and West Kirk (West Church).
You've probably seen the slew of houseboats lining Amsterdam's canals. In Jordaan, you'll get an in-depth look at the story behind the city's houseboat culture at the Houseboat Museum.
Next, head to the lively area of Leidseplein to try a typical Dutch 'window' snack — these 'windows' are unique vending machines that sell hot food like kroket (deep fried veal croquette). It may sound strange, but it's a must-try!
Continue to the Museum District, home to several world-famous museums including the Van Gogh Museum and Rjiksmuseum, as well as the Vondelpark.
Your last stop is a favorite of locals and tourist alike: Albert Cuyp, the largest street market in the Netherlands. Wandering the market's maze of aisles and vendors, you'll find everything from fresh produce to trendy clothing.

Robert was our amazing tour guide for a 4 hour walk on our first day in Amsterdam. Robert was energetic, knowledgeable, personable and was able to adapt our tour so that we ended at our house rental. His tour gave us a great perspective on how to navigate the city with ease for the rest of our trip. He showed us several sites that I don't think we would have found on our own for example, we walked through Central Station for a view of the water and ferry. There were four people in our group and he was able to address the interest of all of us - history, art, shopping. Overall, I would give him 6 stars if I could, but 5 will have to do. Highly recommend this as a first day activity to give you the overall idea of the City of Amsterdam.

Absolutely wonderful. We learned so much about the city - past and present - and have a new appreciation for its place in history. Well worth it!

Eveline was a wonderful tour guide. She was on time picking us up from our hotel, and then proceeded to show us around the beautiful city of Amsterdam. She had enough in her budget to shout us a cup of coffee, which was very welcome on the cold day. We want to thank Eveline for the tour, the highlight for us was the flower market. We recommend highly Eveline for a walking tour.

This was a must do for any first timers to Amsterdam! Juliette was absolutely amazing with her knowledge of the city's history and a delight to tour with around the city. Wear your walking shoes! We truly covered the city and had a great overview of everything.

The tour guide met us at our hotel promptly at 9:30 am. We had an amazing day with this guide. She was knowledgeable and courteous. Walked just over 18.5 km in 4 hours. Would recommend highly.

Our first day and our guide gave us a great 4hr walking tour of Amsterdam. She first asked if there was anything in particular we wanted to see, got to know us a bit and then personalised the tour. We learned so much about the citys history, culture and the mentality. We got lucky and the weather held out and it didnt rain as predicted. Im reviewing this after having been on 2 Viator tours on this trip and I would definitely book with them again they clearly choose guides who are very good at what they do.

Lia exceeded our expectations in every respect. She is quite personable, knowledgeable and accommodating. As a result, we had a wonderful tour both in the sites that we experienced and in the knowledge that she imparted.

This was our 6th time using Viator. The first 5 tours were 5 . This one was disappointing. Though the tour guide was very pleasant, she didnt seem to have a definitive game plan for the 4 hour tour. There was also a clear lack of enthusiasm for the 4 hour walk and knowledge she imparted regarding the city was minimal. Not worth the , expected much more for a private tour.

Robert showed up right on time and gave us a very informative and enjoyable tour of the city. We had gotten into town a few hours earlier and this was an excellent orientation to the city and the history of the area.

John our tour guide was excellent! His knowledge of the city's history and enthusiasm were outstanding. Our group of six arrived in Amsterdam two days ahead of our cruise and we had the opportunity to do a little sightseeing on our own. I would suggest that you book the guided walking tour for your first day in the city. If you then have free time before you sail, take advantage to see areas not covered on the tour. The city is very walk-able but watch out for cyclists apparently bicycles in Amsterdam do not have brakes. Nor do pedestrians have the right of way.

Charlotte was our tour guide and was fantastic. Her pace matched was comfortable for us and told stories about the sites that we were seeing. She built a relationship through finding common ground with us. She recommended places to see and places to eat that were close by at the end of the tour. Her English was good. I would ask for her on any subsequent visit.

We were disappointed with our tour. It wound up just being our family of 4. Guide was nice, but we felt like we were on a tour with a family friend . We have been traveling all over the Baltics with multiple tours our guides were always prepared and enthusiastic. Guide dependent I guess

OMG! I feel so blessed to have taken this tour. First, my guide Massimo was the best I could have hoped for. He and I hit it off right away, and the next 4 hours were amazing. His depth of knowledge of the history of Amsterdam and the Netherlands was the highlight of my first full day in Amsterdam. We walked everywhere. We talked, we laughed, and we shared a great experience. I would do this tour in a heartbeat again and again. HIGHLY RECOMMEND, and ask for Massimo! :-

We all highly enjoyed this tour, even though we had just gotten off an over night flight with hardly any sleep. Our guide was very knowledgeable and took us to the highlights of the city but off the beaten path some, which we enjoyed seeing. We were treated to a Dutch snack and coffee, both were great! We learned so much about the city, I would have never known. You can tell he loves his city and loves to show it off. He also helped us with a couple of questions for other activites we had while in Amsterdam.

This is an excellent tour to acquaint you with Amsterdam. Robert, my guide, was knowledgable and ready and willing to take me where ever I wanted to go as well as show me some spots like hidden Catholic Churches that I knew nothing about. I was some what apprehensive at the beginning as I was taking this tour by myself. But all of that was for naught as Robert's friendly and easy demeanor made it seem as I was walking and talking with a friend. Excellent tour.

Danni was our tour guide and she was knowledgeable and friendly and we spent 4 hours with her as a group of 4. There is not the same historical features such as Rome or Istanbul but we wanted the history of the city and understanding of the reclamation of the land over the last centuries. Danni was able to provide us with much information and we thoroughly enjoyed our tour.

My wife and I took the private Amsterdam City Walking Tour Tour/D525-6290ans4 and we had Mr. Kees as our guide. We were picked up at the Hotel on time and the tour lasted four hours. He was a very knowledgeable and sophisticated guide, who had an answer to all our questions and was a well educated, fine mannered Gentleman. We highly appreciated his explanations and stories and enjoyed this trip very much. I wanted to say, that the tour was perfect. I recommend People who want to visit Amsterdam in an intelligent and sophisticated way to ask for him.

Outstanding tour. It was so nice to have our guide meet us at our hotel. That made it very easy to start the tour. We like to take a tour when we arrive to get an idea of the city layout and get ideas of things we really want to do when we travel. This tour did a great job of helping us understand Amsterdam and identify fun things to do during the remainder of our trip. We were the one 2 persons on this tour, so it our guide was able to adjust the tour to our interests. He did a great job providing us the most customized and fun for us 4 hour tour possible. I feel we were able to see a quick overview of much of Amsterdam during this tour and learned a lot about the culture of Amsterdam. Bring your questions about Amsterdam and be ready to tell the guide what you like to do/see/eat when you travel. That will help him/her customize the tour to you, providing you with the most value for your investment. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that likes to walk, conversate , learn and travel.

A walking tour of Amsterdam with a knowledgeable, friendly, and astute guide with a deep experience of the city. I would not have minded a small-group walking tour, but did not see one available. However because it was just me, my fantastic guide Robert was able to tailor the walk a bit to my tastes. I saw much more than I would have by simply wandering around, which is what I typically do when traveling alone, and I learned a lot about a variety of subjects unique to Amsterdam. So I have a lot to go on now and much more to explore and research. The walk was about 4 hours, so we covered quite a lot of the city. Luckily I love to walk. We did take a couple of breaks for coffee and a nosh, also interesting experiences. Highly recommended!

This was one of the best decisions we have made. Our tour guide was wonderful, very easy to bond with, and related to us very well. We saw so much more with him than we possible could have on our own or with a group. And the wealth of information he shared with use was extraordinary.

I enjoyed this tour very much. The guide was knowledgable and tailored the tour for my. Interests and for the fact that I already knew Amsterdam quite well as a business traveler. I booked the tour because I always lamented not knowing more about the different neighborhoods in the canal district, not knowing if I was looking at important buildings and not knowing if I was missing some real hidden gems.......it turns out that I was! I appreciated the opportunity to see what I was missing very much.

A very time effective way to introduce oneself to Amsterdam and its history. Our guide, Robert, was very knowledgeable, accommodating and friendly. A group tour would certainly be lower cost, but there is real value in a private tour, particularly when one has limit limited time available.

We had a lovely guide, Katya, who has lived in the canal area of Amsterdam for many years. She was very informative and also flexible about our itinerary since we had already spent a day in the city and had seen some sites. She was wonderful. My only suggestion has not to do with the guide at all. It would be best if the description of the tour can be very specific to note that you will NOT take part in the Anne Frank house tour and that if you wish to do so you must separately schedule that and purchase your own tickets. I did not know this. In other cities where we have booked private tours many major attractions were included the agency purchases the tickets in advance as well as being able to enter without standing in line. There was not adequate communication on this and unfortunately this meant we missed the Anne Frank house tour. If I had know when I booked the private tour we would have had plenty of time to separate purchase the Anne Frank house tour tickets too.

This tour was not as advertised. The description says, with a knowledgeable private guide, admire iconic works of art at the Van Gogh Museum. Later in the description it refers to exploring the museum district.. I was unsure as a result whether the tour included entrance to the Museum itself, so I phoned Viator to ask. I was told that the tour DID include entrance to the museum. It did not. We did do a lot of walking - over 5 miles - but a lot of it was through uninteresting and at times seedy neighborhoods. We did not see Vondelpark either, unless you count the fact that our guide pointed out the window of the tram to its entrance gate. Our guide was friendly and pleasant, but just seriously lacked the ability to make her city come alive. The focus of her commentary was largely economics including quite a monologue on current health care costs and taxes. As for places we visited - a low-end department store where she encouraged us to buy food from a food stall, and McDonalds, where she also asked if we were hungry! We have traveled quite a bit, have taken lots of tours, and generally are very easy to please. This was disappointing.

This private tour consisted of walking and traveling by tram to various old and new parts of Amsterdam. We met Daphne Duyne, who was our tour guide of the private Rembrandt walking tour, again. What another great time we spent with Daphne, it was so relax and informative. She explained how the city was developed and led us to many beautiful areas eg. the seven bridge canal, nine street area, Jordaan district, Red Light district, Chinatown, houseboats area in the modern part of Amsterdam. We also had a great privilege to visit a secret and beautiful private garden hidden away from old building facades. At the end of the tour, we all felt that we had been leading around by a friend rather than by a tour guide.

Don't let the price for this one turn you away. If you are visiting the city for the first time, don't just sign up for this tour, make this your first experience if you can. Fresh off the plane, we joined Linda who walked us just my wife and I for four hours through our first glimpses into the city. For my wife, it gave us a grounding in getting a lay of the land for our next few days. For me, it founded every sight on the history and culture I was anxious to learn. Linda wasn't just a travel lecturer, she was a wonderfully friendly assistant who made sure we knew all the right travel tips and advice. Thank you Linda!

This 4 hour walking tour of Amsterdam will give you a good overview of the many interesting places parks, museums, shopping, cafes and restaurants, etc. to spend time in Amsterdam. The Canal Boat Museum was worth the visit and was the only place we spent any time inside apart from one tram ride, so be prepared to wear your best walking shoes and come prepared for rain or shine we had rain!. A good introduction to the city for anyone who has not been there before.
