Private Tour: Amsterdam Rembrandt Art Walking Tour Including Rijksmuseum

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Relive the glory of the most famous painter of the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt van Rijn, on this customizable private walking tour in Amsterdam. The artist lived for many years in this city, and this private tour reveals the most important places tied to his life and career. See where he lived (now the Rembrandt House Museum) and where he painted his masterpieces, including ‘The Night Watch.’ Then visit the Rijksmuseum to marvel at Rembrandt’s most celebrated paintings including ‘The Night Watch,’ ‘The Jewish Bride,’ ‘Syndics of the Drapers' Guild’ and his signature portraits.

Your guide will meet you outside the Rembrandt House Museum at your chosen time. On this 4-hour private walking tour, you’ll be taken to sites throughout Amsterdam relating to the famous 17th-century Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, all while hearing about his life and achievements as the greatest painter of the Dutch Golden Age and one of the most important artists in Dutch history. Since this is a private tour, you can customize your exact itinerary; simply let your guide know if there are any specific sights you'd like to see.

Your starting point is the former house that Rembrandt lived in with his first wife, Saskia, during the artist’s wealthy days, before the financial hardships and personal tragedy of his later years. Restored to its former glory, the house is now a museum furnished with a superb display of Rembrandt’s etchings, works and personal items.

From here, it’s just a few steps to the South Church, where Rembrandt is said to have painted his most famous masterpiece, The Night Watch. Next, pass by the Weighing House, where he painted The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp.
After visiting Dam Square, arrive at West Church to see where Rembrandt is buried. You'll hear about the house nearby where the painter spent the last days of his life.

Continue walking along Amsterdam’s scenic canals to Museum Square, arriving at the Rijksmuseum for a guided tour. This museum holds the most notable collection of Rembrandt's work in the Netherlands, offering a stately display of his signature talents: portraits, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible.

Admire some of Rembrandt's most famous paintings including The Jewish Bride, Syndics of the Drapers' Guild and The Night Watch, with its remarkable use of shadow and light. Your guide will reveal the stories, techniques and significance behind each piece, as well as works by other famous painters of the Dutch Golden Age. You’ll discover what makes Rembrandt’s work so unique and revered, and begin to understand why he has been considered “one of the great prophets of civilization.â€

Your tour ends at the museum, and you’re free to continue exploring on your own.

The tour was great! we were a little late but the guide was patient. We wished the guide has the painting references printed out to refer too instead of searching on her cell phone for the painting. Sad we didnt visit Rembrandt‘s home. Other than that, it was good.

NUESTRA GUIA HABLABA BIEN ESPAÑOL. RECORRIMOS LOS SITIOS QUE HABIA RECORRIDO REMBRANDT EN SU TIEMPO. AL FINAL EL TOUR TERMINA EL EL RIJKSMUSEUM, DONDE A PESAR DE ESTAR LAS OBRAS DE REMBRANDT FALTO MAYOR EXPLICACION.

Dani was a great guide, she has an extensive knowledge of the city and an expert knowledge of the Rembrandt Art in the Rijksmuseum along with the contempories of Rembrandt. She was able to explain the symbolism of motifs in the art and how this came as messages to his audience

We took this tour about two months ago and found the sites we visited very well chosen as they fully met our interests and curiosity. We would like to put special emphasis on the exceptional competence of our guide, Maya SP, who every step of the way provided surplus information and commentary on Amsterdam, which otherwise we suspect would have been impossible to have. So, we would highly recommend both the tour and the guide. Moreover, we would recommend, and we ourselves would take, every tour with Maya as a guide.

Never thought much about Rembrandt until this tour. Our guide brought him to life from the house where he lived to his paintings in the Rijksmuseum. Ours was a private tour, just 4 of us. It was a great experience and I recommend it to everyone who visits Amsterdam.

Wonderful walking tour with Willem! Best tour we have ever taken! Very knowledgeable and thoughtful. He gave us lots of info on Rembrandt for 4 hrs as well as giving us wonderful information on Amsterdam the city, people and historical times. He spent at least an hour in the museum giving a wealth of information not only on Rembrandt but on the Rijksmuseum and how it had been built and remodeled!

We have learned many new and interested facts about Rembrandt, his master piece Night Watch, his artistic style, his contemporaries eg. Vermeer, from Daphne Duyne, our tour guide. Daphne is so passionate and knowledgeable about Rembrandt and other Dutch painting artist. It was a very nice and leisure walking from Rembrandt house to Rijksmuseum, we have also learned Dutch history along the way.

We really enjoyed our tour and the ability to walk as fast or as slow as we wished or to linger when something interested us. Derek was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and the interesting little architectural items we never would have noticed on our own. I expected more of Rembrandt-focused tour, but Derek's information was much broader than that, encompassing the descriptions and history of each of the stops along the way, regardless of its association with Rembrandt. We found that very enlightening, since it was our first visit to Amsterdam.

A wonderful historical guided tour through Amsterdam by one of the best guides we have ever had. We were initially almost an hour late for our tour because it was our first day in Amsterdam and the starting location was confusing to us. Our guide waited patiently for and was wonderful.

I highly recommend this private tour. My guide, Lia Kijzer, was terrific. She was on time, very personable and knowledgeable about the history of Amsterdam, Rembrandt, the places we should see, and the Rijksmuseum. It was such a pleasant day, like spending the day with a friend :-. It was a lot of walking and talking, and the four hours went very quickly. If you like walking, love history, and are interested in learning then this tour is for you.

Having taken two Viator walkiing tours in Rome last Autumn when each group consisted of more than 20 people, my husband and I were extremely surprised to find that we were the only two tourists to be walked around Amsterdam by Massimo. He was delightful, and we enjoyed his company for more than three hours, finishing in the Rijksmuseum. Perhaps his knowledge of Rembrandt and art in general were, by his own admission, only slightly less superficial than our own, but he worked extremely hard to keep us informed and entertained.

Our guide was wonderful. It was raining very hard so we didn't want to do the walking tour. Our guide was willing to do anything we wanted. We opted just for the Rijksmuseum and she gave us a wonderful tour and was very interesting .

A fabulous way to experience Amsterdam! Although the focus was Rembrandt, our guide Willem did an excellent job answering our many questions and explaining many facets of everyday life in Amsterdam past and present. The time just flew by--what a great experience!

We had a private 4 hour walking tour and entrance to the museum. Diederik Ravesloot was our guide. We had to meet him at the Rembrandt museum to start the tour. He was on time and very knowledgeable about the area. He stayed withus the whole time making sure to take us to the highlights in the museum. One of the best things we signed up for.

Jan was our excellent guide and we learned so much as he interwined Rembrandt's career as an artist with the history of Amsterdam and its people, customs, and the land and water. Fantastic! Do when you get there! Morning walk gave plenty of time in the Rijks in the pm. Great food in museum restaurant.

We had a lovely guide who met us at the appointed time at the Rembrandt Museum and she let us set our own pace. We are fast walkers and we covered a lot of the city._br/_ Evelyn was knowledgeable and pleasant company._br/_ In the Rijksmuseum she took us to all the major areas so we could get an idea where to come after the tour and then took us to the Rembrandts._br/_ Well worth doing.
