Private Tour: Anne Frank Walking Tour of Amsterdam

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Trace the early life of Anne Frank before she went into hiding on a 1.5-hour walking tour of Amsterdam-Zuid. The neighborhood is home to Anne’s school, her family house and even the place where she bought the diary that would make her famous. See it all, and make the most of commentary tailored to your questions by an attentive private guide.

Meet your private guide at Merdeplein Square location in Amsterdam-Zuid, a wealthy residential area of the city. Then, set off through the streets and listen as your guide shares the story of Anne Frank before her family went into hiding on July 6, 1942.
See the school where Anne received her early education as a young girl, and pass the building that her family called home before they were forced into hiding. View the place where Anne got her journal, which would posthumously propel her into the spotlight and make her a household name all over the world. As you walk, listen to your private guide to hear intriguing facts and historical information about the young writer, the people she hid with and the legacy that her diary left behind.
If you have specific questions about Anne Frank, the Holocaust or Amsterdam during the wartime years, simply let your guide know. The beauty of a private tour, such as this, is that the commentary can be tailored around any questions you may have.
After 1.5 hours exploring the places linked to Anne Frank around south Amsterdam, your tour finishes with a warm cup of coffee.

We did this tour in the morning, and then the Anne Frank museum visit later in the afternoon note: walking tour is in different part of Amsterdam, and timed tickets are needed in advance for the AF Museum. Doing the walking tour in the morning added so much dimension to what we saw later in the museum. Esther, our tour guide, was wonderful. She carefully set up the big picture background in terms of immigration causes and life in this area in the 1930s before layering with many interesting facts about the Frank family. The architecture in the area was fascinating and we aren't big architecture buffs. We have 2 teens and she was very effective in finding ways to engage them. She truly painted a picture of what life was like for Jewish immigrants and how the Dutch were not necessarily complicit but very naive in allowing the Nazis to separate the Jewish community and slowly build their efforts to persecute them. Handled all of our questions very smoothly.

The Anne Frank walking tour was fantastic!! We really had a wonderful time and enjoyed our guided tour so much we went over our allocated time so much - we had to miss part of the tour....since our guide had another tour coming up. Thanks for a wonderful tour!! We will definitely have to come back to do the rest of the tour!!

Wonderful ... humanizing tour of Amsterdam. This had a powerful impact on our children, and us. We left the experiences wanting to more proactively have and inspire kindness, inclusiveness and acceptance.

Very good tour of where Anne Frank lived before the annex, her school and the store where her parents bought her diary. Was an excellent precursor to visiting the Annex.

The directions where rediculously confusing. We never made our tour because our directions said to meet in front of the Anne Frank statue in the square by the church. We were there and our guide never showed. The emergency number isn't operational on Saturday so what is the point of having an emergency number at all. And although my email and phone number was on file , no one called me. Finally finding a Dutch citizen to help translate the instructions, we came to find out we were 2.5 miles away from where we were to meet our guide. I asked the ticket lady at the Anne Frank House if we could still tour and she said no. And that this happends all the time . I made these reservations for myself and 5 other people 5 months ago because of the popularity of this museum. ALL of us were terribly disappointed. I have other reviews of Viator. Not good ones

this was probably the worse tour I have ever been on, I called the number on the voucher because it was confusing as to the meeting place, paid for a taxi because we were in the wrong place and the guide was very sweet and nice and totally not his fault, spend most of his time talking about anything else but Ann Frank, I feel that it was an over priced tour and I would not recommend it to anyone. Just honestly misleading to what it really is. I have booked with Viator many times and can't say enough about all the other tours but this one was a great disappointment.

We loved or Private Walking Tour in Amsterdam. We had four grandchildren with us and they were mesmerized by our tour guide. We had gone to the Anne Frank House the afternoon before. Out tour guide helped them experience where Anne Frank lived with her family before the attic, the school and neighborhood where she lived as a young girl and made it so real for the kids. I can't thank Viator enough for making our tours in Amsterdam so amazing and helping us to teach our grandchildren the culture and history of a wonderful country.

This was excellent! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and we learned a lot about the Frank family and Anne that you just don't get from the books.

We did not do this tour. Our flight was delayed.

This tour was a great disappointment. While the sights we saw were interesting, our guide's knowledge of the surrounding events and history was very limited and added nothing to the experience. She also appeared to offer controversial views of the history of the Holocaust in the Netherlands which could be viewed as offensive.

DO NOT EXPECT TO SEE THE INSIDE OF THE FAMOUS ANNE FRANK HOUSE. We were duped, robbed and provided with a horrible private guide that didn't have a good grasp of the facts and feigned surprise that this 130 per person tour didn't include the house. Shame on you VIATOUR. I've been on many of your trips but this one completely ripped me off and for that I will strongly encourage other tours outside your company.

This was an amazing tour. The guide - Juliet - was very knowledgeable about Anne Frank and the area in which she and her family lived. It was very touching to see the Frank house, the schools that Anne and her sister attended, the park in which they played, and the bookstore where she picked out her first diary. This is a must for anyone who wants to explore the story beyond the Anne Frank House where the family went into hiding. Well worth every penny! Thank you Juliet!

LOVED this tour! Our guide was so passionate and knowledgeable about Anne Frank and #39;s life leading up to and during her time in hiding. This tour does not include admission to the Anne Frank House. You spend a few hours walking around her neighborhood-- home, school, ice cream shop. Highly recommend!

Not sure what we expected but it was interesting seeing the places before Anne Frank and her family went into hiding. The tour guide was great and the coffee at the end was a great tough.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. It was great to see how the Frank's lived prior to going into hiding. It gave us a much better understanding of the sights that we saw at the Annex, Anne Frank House Tour when we went. Dot was an amazing tour guide with an abundance of knowledge for that time period. We enjoyed seeing the bookstore where Anne's father bought her diary. It was nice to see the school Anne attended and the area in which they lived in Amsterdam. Definitely worth the time and the money.

We did not take the tour. Our hotel was five miles from where the tour began and would cost us 30.00 to get there. I should not have booked this tour without knowing how far away the starting point was and how far the Anne Frank house was from there. Interesting thing was our hotel was actually just a few blocks from the Anne Frank house. I tried to get in touch with visitor to no avail. The emergency number was no longer connected and the other phone number only worked Mon thru Fri. I will investigate the tours much more next time if I use visitor.

Our guide was good and easily understood. Despite the chilly rain, we did our walking and stopped at a warm cafe! I would not recommend this - it would be far better to go to the house, not the museum and walking tour.

Bit disappointed about this tour for the price charged. Over 2hrs but generally just wandering around aimlessly . The tour guide was nice but not very good on the knowledge . Also we thought this tour included Anne Frank museum again for the price .

Our tour guide was amazing. BUT if you think you are getting a tour of Anne Frank's house where she grew up and where she and her family where hiding you are not. We were very disappointed, especially in the amount of money we paid for the tour. You are better off going on a walk of the area and saving the money.

This was definitely the highlight of my visit to Amsterdam! My guide, Mossimo, was extremely knowledgeable and gracious, pointing out sites and monuments that might otherwise have been overlooked. I highly recommend, and assure that the walk is light-moderate, and well worth the effort.

The Anne Frank Walking Tour is a very informative and also extremely interesting tour. The guide took our small group of 4 people on a 2 hours of easy walking around the suburb of Amsterdam. The guide was well informed, patient, and had plenty of information for us to view. The tour included Anne Franks house, her school and the places she played. It included the residences of family her aided her during the war. The tour concluded at a coffee shop where we could relax over a complimentary coffee and ask any further questions of the guide. This tour is highly recommended by those who wish to gain information about the private life of Anne Frank and her family.

This was a very relaxed and intimate tour away from the crowds. You get to see and experience the elements of Anne Frank's life growing up in Amsterdam before her move to the Anne Frank House in the heart of Amsterdam. This tour takes you well away from the very touristy parts of Amsterdam. It is also an opportunity to see another part of Amsterdam in the suburbs and the variety of architectural styles that have evolved in pre and post WWII Amsterdam. Our guide was a delight and very knowledgeable.

So Good! Our tour guide was fantastic. It was neat to learn all about this remarkable girl, family and friends while walking the neighborhood in which they lived. Our guide was so knowledgeable and a perfect lead-in to the tour of the Anne Frank House. I highly recommend this tour.

This was a great tour! Our tour guide was awesome! He was very informative and personable. We learned so much about Anne Frank and her family. He also gave us great tips for our visit to Amsterdam, and the best time to go to the Anne Frank house. He was right on too! We were able to get in.

Extremely disappointing. Tour begins way out of town 50 euro in a taxi. One assumes it begins at the Anne Frank House in central Amsterdam. It is a very simple tour with very little substance. Our guide was great and we had a great morning however no access to Anne Frank House. This tour must state where it begins much more clearly.

We actually thought this tour included the Anne Frank House Museum but it did not. We are so glad that we took this tour anyway. It was excellent and our tour guide Linda was an angel. It showed where Anne Frank lived and went to school. It was away from the tourist area, quite and very interesting.

Was a very good history lesson and provided a great deal of insight - just needs to be clear it related to Anne's time before the hide-out and does not include visiting that site - for those that want to understand the details about that time not just focus on Anne Frank

An interesting tour of the area where Anne grew up before going into hiding. A passionate and informative guide. Note this tour does not include entry to the Anne Frank museum which would have completed the tour very well especially given how difficult it it to get tickets for the museum.
