Zaanse Schans Windmills and Volendam Tour from Amsterdam
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Step back into the Holland of old at Zaanse Schans and the fishing town of Volendam on 5-hour afternoon or morning trip from Amsterdam. With an expert guide, travel to Zaanse, a vision of quaint shops, house and wooden windmills. After touring a windmill to see its working cogs and sails, continue to Volendam to discover its pretty waterfront framed by wooden houses and fish restaurants. Visit Volendam Museum and a cheese-making workshop, and enjoy free time to explore or eat independently.
Choose from a morning or afternoon tour and then meet your guide in central Amsterdam. Board your air-conditioned minibus, and travel north to Zaanse Schans, a museum village on the Zaan River.
On route, pass Holland’s famous polders — lands reclaimed from water — and dykes, and hear about the country’s permanent battle to stave off the sea. As you look, listen to stories about Zaanse and its historical, still-working wooden windmills.
After roughly 30 minutes on the road, arrive in Zaanse Schans, and admire quaint wooden shops, museums and neat riverfront houses as you walk to one of its large windmills. Head inside and listen as the miller explains the age-old milling operation. Climb the ladder to the first floor to see the huge, wooden cogs that help produce wind energy, and then head out onto the platform to watch the sails whip right past your nose.
Continue to Volendam on the shores of IJselmeer Lake. Hear how Volendam thrived as a fishing port during Holland’s Golden Age due to its position on the bay of Zuider Zee, and learn how the Zuider was later sealed off by a man-made dyke, turning it into IJselmeer.
Stroll along the charming De Dijk waterfront past boats, houses and fish restaurants, and visit Volendam Museum. Explore the exhibits that include traditional Dutch costumes, musical instruments and handicrafts, and trace the town’s history through the old maps and photos.
Afterward, stop at a cheese factory to discover how Holland’s famous cheese is made. Watch a cheese-making demonstration and sample some delicious varieties for yourself. Lastly, enjoy some free time at the waterfront to have a meal (own expense) or buy souvenirs before rejoining your guide. Your tour ends in central Amsterdam.

The Windmills are amazing and could easily spend a whole day there. After our demonstration, we only had 30 mins explore the stores and grounds - not enough.

Cecilia was funny and entertaining guide. She told us so many interesting facts. Windmill tour was nice, learned about why they use it. Cheese factory and Waffle store was both good. Got to taste some good samples of cheese and waffle and learned how they make it, I recommend it. Seafood at Volendam was very fresh and excellent. It was windy and raining on and off, I wish it was nicer weather. We left that tour and went to Edam which was not really interesting that might be why tour did not take us there.

This was the only trip we took out of Amsterdam during our recent brief visit and it was a great choice. How could you be in the Netherlands and not see windmills and the Zeider Zee!! We accomplished a lot in a short period. The tours were brief and we had plenty of time to explore on our own. The tour guide was informative without being intrusive. Plenty of historic and geographic background. It is not often during such a short excursion that you get to meet the other tourists, but our group had a wonderful time together which made the trip even more enjoyable.

This tour was not what we expected from the basic description. We were given very limited time at the windmills due to the bus parking lot being full. We had to walk several extra blocks before even getting in. Extra time should have been allowed to see more than just one windmill. This is a beautiful village and we had to rush through it. Our time in Volendam wasnt any better as we should have skipped the cheese shop and cookie tour. This was also a lunch stop but not much time to just enjoy this charming village on our own. The mile walk back to the bus parking lot was tiring. Book a tour of both these wonderful places but only if it lets you off to explore on your own.

If you bring kids not recommended to take this tour. I think the pace is too fast for child.

There was not enough time spent at the Windmills. My recommendation is to skip the Vollendam Museum and increase the Windmill time.

Group was too large (27) to call and #34;Small Group and #34;. I did not realize the tour would be in Spanish and English. Windmills were great! Volendam museum was not too good. The cheese factory was ok.

The tour was very good. The booking agent at Viator messed up the reservation. He emailed me a voucher that had the tour as an afternoon tour, but he booked it with the tour company for a morning tour. Thankfully, the tour company allowed us to take the tour the next day, and avoid a lost cost. I think this type of work from Viator is unacceptable.

Sadly this tour was disappointing. Great places of interest to see but we were rushed through Zaanse Schans Windmills and the museum, then in Volendam we were taken to a restaurant and given 1.5 hours for lunch. When on a short tour lunch is not necessary. We opted for NO lunch so that we had time to explore what Volendam had to offer. Add to that, the Tour Guide had to commentate in two languages. Not her fault, but Oh dear it was NON STOP information/talking. Beware when booking this tour

Enjoyed it very much. Tour guide was excellent. Just enough time to get away from Amsterdam and back in time for a smooth afternoon in the city. Place recommended for lunch was great.

Excellent Guide. Beautiful sights. Just enough time to get away from Amsterdam for a few hours and be back in time to enjoy the afternoon/evening.

Great tour despite pouring rain at the windmills. Good to get out of Amsterdam and see some of the country.
