Matanuska Glacier Hike from Anchorage
Anchorage, United States of America
For a unique Alaskan adventure, take a guided hike along the ancient Matanuska Glacier, the largest glacier in Alaska accessible by car! Explore blue melt-water pools, impressive ice formations and deep crevasses, and learn about this astounding natural wonder from your expert guide. Tucked in the beautiful Matanuska-Susitna Valley, this breathtaking area is shaped by three mountain ranges – the Alaska Range, the Talkeetna Mountains and the Chugach Mountains – so you’ll be treated to unforgettable vistas during your moderate 2-hour hike, with all gear and safety equipment included. End with a relaxing Alaskan lunch overlooking the glacier.
You’ll be picked up from your Anchorage hotel in the morning and driven 35 miles (56 km) northwest to the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. You’ll be provided water and snacks on your comfortable, scenic ride. Shaped by three mountain ranges – the Alaska Range, the Talkeetna Mountains and the Chugach Mountains – this amazing valley was carved by glaciers, leaving thousands of rivers and lakes. Your destination is the Matanuska Glacier, a 27-mile long (43-km) river of ice dating back thousands of years. This is the largest glacier in Alaska accessible by vehicle! You’ll spend two hours hiking along the glacier with your expert guide, who’ll explain how the glacier has formed and shaped the landscape in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. You’ll be provided a helmet, walking stick and crampons for your shoes for easy exploration of the blue melt-water pools, ice formations and deep crevasses that make up this amazing natural wonder. Your guide will take you to the glacier’s most spectacular sites. Plus, because the Matanuska Glacier is a weather hole, cold air from the glacier forces warm air upward toward the mountain peaks, so chances are you’ll be treated to sunny skies and favorable weather. At midday, stop for a traditional Alaskan lunch at a scenic spot overlooking the glacier. At the end of your tour, you’ll be taken back to your hotel.

Bus tour guide did not accompany us due to feeling sick. Glacier tour guide went and she mainly spoke Spanish with a spanish couple on our trip and spent most of her time with them. My crampons did not fit correctly and kept twisting causing me to slide and fall. You need appropriately senior guides who respect all individuals and not ones who are too young and act like juveniles. It ruined an obvious beautiful experience. We paid too well for this guide to ruin it for us and it was our last tour of our vacation. . .
