Vintage Scooter Rental and Self-Guided Tour of LGBT-Friendly Athens
Athens, Greece
In addition to its archaeological sites, Athens features a vibrant LGBT scene with plenty of gay-friendly venues throughout the city. In fact, many areas can trace their rebirth to the support of the gay community. On a vintage scooter, you can check out all the hot spots — including trendy cafes, artistic neighborhoods, and nightlife bars — on a self-guided tour with pre-programmed GPS. A helmet, lock, fuel and road assistance are all included with your 6-hour rental.
Make your way to the rental office, just a few minutes' walk from the Acropolis (Akropoli) metro station. At your scheduled time, pick up your vintage scooter, along with a helmet, lock, and GPS with preloaded tours. After a safety briefing and orientation to the operation of your automatic scooter, you're ready to take off into the streets of Athens.
You'll have 6 hours to explore some of the city's most popular LGBT destinations, which are supported by a thriving gay and lesbian community. Stop in the Koukaki neighborhood, situated at the Hill of the Muses with lively cafes and bars. Check out the Koukles Club; on weekends it features the best drag show in town and is a popular hang-out for drag queens — and their admirers. The charming Plaka neighborhood, with its winding streets of neoclassical buildings, is preferred by tourists and locals, while Zappeion Park at Syntagma Square is a popular place to 'cruise' the gay scene.
You'll find plenty of gay-friendly cafes and bars at St. Irene Square; Rooster, near FLEX Sauna, is the most central and best-known among them and is open all day. Stroll the streets of Metaxourgeio, fronted by traditional houses, pretty gardens, industrial buildings, and modernist 1930s-era constructions. The artistic ambiance is a showcase for the workshops of local painters, musicians, and actors. Gazi is Athen's central gay neighborhood, where you’ll find plenty of bars and clubs just north of the Kerameikos metro station, specifically at the corner of Iera Odos and Megalou Alexandrou streets.
Further afield, the gay beach of Limanakia is situated just past the seaside town of Vouliagmeni, not far from Athens. It’s mostly a nudist beach, and it’s rocky, so don’t expect to rest in the sand — but do expect to be seen!
When your time is up, simply ride your vintage scooter back to the starting point.
