Athens Shore Excursion: Private City Sightseeing and Acropolis Tour

Athens, Greece

Explore Athens, the cradle of civilization, on a half-day shore excursion from Piraeus Port. With an expert private guide at your side, walk up the UNESCO-listed Acropolis of Athens (entrance own expense), seeing beguiling structures like the Parthenon. On a tour around town by minivan, see top Athens attractions such as Hadrian’s Arch and Syntagma Square – the focal point of the city.

After your cruise ship docks in Piraeus Port, meet your private guide and head off by minivan to explore Athens. For over 25 centuries, the city has been dominated by its Acropolis – the ancient citadel that looks out over the city. Walk up this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site with your guide, passing all of its highlights: Propylaia, Temple of Athena Nike, Erechtheion and the magnificent Parthenon. Hear about these monuments during the Classical ages and learn of the Greek god Athena, for whom the Parthenon was built. After walking to the top, you’ll enjoy some free time to look around and admire captivating views over Athens.

Stroll back into town with your guide and then hop aboard your minivan for your city tour. Watch out for the Temple of Olympian Zeus (Olympieion), which dates back to 6th century BC, and see Hadrian’s Arch – a structure that once divided the Greek part of Athens from the Emperor Hadrian’s Roman city.

Continue through Syntagma Square to see the Greek Parliament House -- formerly a royal palace that was built for King Otto I of Bavaria -- and then see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Pass the Neoclassical buildings of Athens University on the way to the former Olympic Stadium, Panathinaiko Stadium, and hear about the site in ancient times before it was rebuilt for the modern Olympic Games.

After exploring Athens from the comfort of your minivan, you'll end your tour back at Piraeus Port.

Worry-free Shore Excursion:
We will ensure your timely return to the Athens port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. Dee met us at the docks with the van and a driver. She was very knowledgeable and explained what everything was as we drove into Athens. She took us to Olympic stadium where we stopped for a few pictures. She timed it just right so we got to see the changing of the guards at the Presidental Palace before we were off the the Acropolis. Lots of steps but we're took it slow and it was well worth the hike!

The tour guide stayed with us for the whole tour and spoke wonderful English. She navigated the crowds and procured our tickets without any trouble. She stayed with one of our travelers who was unable to go to the top of the Parthenon. We never felt that there was no one looking out for us in the sweltering heat. Her explanations made all the difference in seeing the sites. The van was air conditioned spacious and a Godsend as we traveled with little ones in tow. Most happy we took this tour!!! No regrets! Worth every dime!!! - especially With the heat and excess crowds. I tell all my patients that this is the only way to see Athens and the Parthenon.

Athens is very crowded this time of the year. This Shore Excursion picked us up directly from our ship and we were able to see all the highlights of Athens without standing in line. I highly recommend this Excursion.

We arrived to Athens from our cruise ship and met our tour guide at the port. She picked up our party of six and took us to see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Olympic stadium which was used for the 1st modern Olympics in 1896. She then took us to see the Parthenon and two amphitheaters near the Acropolis. Amazing excursion with our guide who was very knowledgeable and spoke English very well. I highly recommend this tour and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Our guide Val was waiting for us outside the port terminal. There were 6 in our group and were driven in a small bus that could hold about 20 people. Val was very knowledgeable about the history of Athens, and was careful to point out everything she could as we drove to the Acropolis. Entry fee was 20 Euros. The climb up was not as steep as we anticipated but we had to watch our footing the entire way as the path was rocky and with marble rocks that could be slippery, and some steps were high steps. The crowd climbing up was very pushy and rude. It felt like a mob scene on the top half of the climb. There were no railings to help. Once on top, Val carefully explained the significance of everything and the site was awesome also. After the Acropolis, we just drove back to our ship. The entire tour was 4 hours,

Our tour was simply incredible. Our tour guide Eleni (Helen) was an exceptional teacher. She brought maps and other materials to help with her explanation and was eager for us to ask questions rather then stick to a script. We have taken a fair number of tours over the years and this was the bes

Nine of us as a group had taken the tour on the 28th of August 2014. It was excellent. Our tour guide was Helen and she came and picked us up from the port sharp at 7:30 am. Helen was very knowledgeable about Greek history and she took great pains to explain all our questions. The vehicle was a Mercedes van well equipped and the driver was also good._br/_ R.Ram, Canada

Disappointing. Our guide was very pleasant. But the driver was obviously a smoker therefore the car stank to cigarettes, absolutely no consideration for the tourists. Athens had a depressed feel about it, and I would not consider going back there again.

Helen was wonderful, given the time constraints (our fault!). Next time, we will plan for more time so we can enjoy this stunning and fascinating area at a more leisurely pace.
