Greek Cooking Class in an Athens Tavern

Athens, Greece

Taste the local flavors of Greece during this 3-hour small-group cooking class in Athens! Taking place at an enchanting city taverna, your cooking class is run by an experienced and passionate chef who demonstrates traditional family Greek cooking. Under the chef’s watchful eye, prepare an authentic Greek feast and then sit down with fellow food-lovers in your group to eat!

This small-group cooking class is limited to 14 people, ensuring you'll learn all about Greek cooking in an intimate atmosphere.

Based on colorful foods from both land and sea, the Greek diet is a perfect example of Mediterranean cuisine. On this small-group cooking class, dive right into the Greek food world, and learn about heartwarming stews, fresh shellfish and classic flavorings such as lemon, cinnamon and oregano.

Make your own way to the start point in Athens’ Monastiraki district, and then walk to a beloved local eatery with your host. Head inside to meet your chef, and start the lesson with a glass of raki (twice-distilled Greek spirit) while chatting with other food-lovers in your group.

With your chef at your side to show you how traditional Greek cooking is done, prepare and cook an authentic meal consisting of four starters and one main course, using fresh herbs and spices. Dishes vary each class, but typical specialties that you may make include melitazanopitakia (eggplant pies), roasted lamb, tzatziki and Greek salad.

At the end of the class, sit down with your group to enjoy the highlight of your evening: eating the feast that you’ve created with your own hands! Relax with wine and chat about cooking tips and Greek cuisine with your group.

Fabulous experience with Anna in Athens. We made all of the dishes-7 total from scratch. After finishing the prep the Tavern staff would cook it for us or chill it so that 3 hours later after all of our food was prepared and cooked we sat down to a lovely dinner of Lamb and potatoes, Greek Salad, Spinach Pie, zucchini balls, stuffed grape leaves, Tzatziki sauce, and lemon yogurt parfait. Beer or wine and ouzo was included. Yummy!

Excellent class with great interaction. Fofi was an amazing host and she had lots to teach us with the right amount of student interaction. The food we made was delicious and it was great to eat the meal with the group at the end of the session. Would definitely recommend!

This was an amazing experience and I enjoyed every minute. There is no better way to immerse yourself into another culture than FOOD! I loved being able to prepare the meal and then enjoy the finished product, which was delicious by the way. The menu consisted of authentic Greek salad, spanakopita, zucchini balls, lamb with potatoes, and a yogurt dessert. During the food prep, we had the opportunity to drink Ouzo (a Greek liqueur) which took a bit of getting used to but not bad. Katerina was a great teacher! She was engaging, pleasant, and knowledgeable. I will take all these recipes with me and have already made a couple things. It was also a great way to meet other people and share our experiences while in Greece. Definitely a must do!!!

This class was one of the highlights of our trip! Our instructor, Fofi, did an amazing job weaving stories, history, and food together. The food was delicious and the other attendees were so fun. We all left completely full!

This was really a lot of fun! We got to meet a great group of people from around the world and spend the evening learning about Greek food and culture. Our teacher was terrific and the wait staff was superb. The only downside was that there was a terrible rain storm that caused a flood in the room we were cooking in, but the restaurant staff stepped up and moved us to a dry space and proceeded to finish cooking the meal for us and treated us to extra drinks and more food. It was a special night and we made lots of memories. The biggest take away was that Greeks average 70 liters of olive oil per person per year - that is NUTS!

This was an amazing evening for all of us! Not only did we learn how to cook traditional Greek dishes but we also learned a lot of peripheral facts about the cuisine and history of the country. The hospitality was spectacular and an evening to remember. I highly recommend this.

This was hands down my favorite activity I did while visiting Athens! Worth every penny and the food we made was delicious! A few of us girls did the class, sipped on some wine, and enjoyed lots of laughs. Our instructor was patient and professional, but SO much fun. They even let you take the recipes home with you, so I can't wait to cook for my family. You will not regret booking this, you will remember it forever! They treated us like family, kept everything really clean, and made sure we had a great time. Thank you for having us, hopefully I will be back soon to do it again!

There were 5 of us ladies that signed up for this class and since we were the only ones it was like a private class for just us. Our instructor Eva was wonderful and gave us so much information about ingredients used in Greek cooking. I loved the way the class was designed and we all helped chop different ingredients and participated in putting each dish together. We made more dishes than we expected and after they cooked we sat at a table outside and got to enjoy the meal. Everything was delicious and some of the best food I ate while in Greece. We took leftovers back to our husbands and they got to try everything we made. I'm so excited to use the recipes and knowledge I learned to cook now that I am home. We all agreed that we were glad we decided to do this class and that it was a fun way to spend the evening. I recommend this class to anyone who loves food and/or cooking.

This class was fantastic! Our instructor was amazing, the food was phenomenal, and I loved that I had clear and easy to follow instructions for recipes to take back home with me. Since taking this class and returning home, I have made the recipes several times and have received nothing but compliments on my cooking. This was definitely a highlight of my trip to Athens!

Amazing time with a fantastic teacher! I've already tried and made all of the recipes since my wife and i got home. It was so much fun and we had a lot of interaction between all of the other classmates. If you want to learn how to cook Greek this is the way to go. She reminded me of how my Grandma cooks. Nothing extremely fancy, just great honest to goodness Greek food. You must do this while you're in Athens. You won't be disappointed.

We had a good time and a great group. Fofi was very personable and fun. She uses a lot, really a lot of extra virgin olive oil. That might affect some people. The food turned out really good even though it was made by the group. Maybe there should be more control over hand washing or people should have to wear gloves.

This was the absolute best!!!! Fofi, the cook/chef was the best -- friendly, clear in her instructions, had the entire group involved the entire time while we were putting dish after dish together. We were laughing and having a wonderful time....then after we put it all together, the tavern cooked everything and we got to eat and eat and eat -- best food ever!!!! Since I have been home I have made 2 of the recipes and they are almost as wonderful as what we made. The entire group was friendly and the taverna was wonderful too. So worth every penny!!! I only wish my husband and other daughter had joined us because it was so much fun!!!!

This was such a fun class! The restaurant was easy to find in a central area. It was late starting but our instructor did not rush and we ended up being at the restaurant until after 10:00. This is an interactive class with lots of participation. We prepared an entire meal including dessert. The organization and flow made for a fun and informative time. My only issue was that there was so much food to eat. We were encouraged to take it with us but as we all were staying in hotels it was not possible. Hopefully the staff could enjoy what was left. I would highly recommend this class! You will not be disappointed.

Fofi is an amazing cook and teacher. We had a great group and had a blast preparing a huge delicious meal. And you get the recipes to boot! I learned several tricks from Fofi and how to pull the excess water from cucumbers for tzatziki and spinach for spinach and cheese pie. Would recommend to those who like to cook and eat!

A MUST DO!! Fofi, our instructor, was great. The food was good. The tips she shared were great. This was so much fun for our group of 6 ladies and it was fun to share this with new friends from Melbourne Australia and San Diego and Paris. Will be making these dishes since she gave us recipes

This is a cannot miss experience!!! It was beyond a great introduction to Greek food and cooking, the host makes you feel like you're cooking with family. The food and recipes were delicious and I have been cooking them ever since my trip! Now if I can only find the exact same fresh ingredients too here in the US!!

I have taken many cooking classes in various locations and I would rate this one of the best. Not only was it hands on with a great group of people, Fofi the instructor tells us new and different ways to make delicious food. After the class is over, the outside table was reserved for our group which is in the heart of the pedestrian street so its a great way to enjoy the meal that you have prepared. AND It IS A LOT OF FOOD! Delicious. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Eva is so wonderful and amazing. I take cooking classes every time I travel and consider myself to be an experienced cook. Often I don't always learn new things, but this class was different. We learned so much and her stories took us back to the kitchen with her grandmother. He truly felt like we were there. She was knowledgeable and informative. The tavern where the class is held is a must go to place. They made us feel like we were family and really went out of their way. I cannot tell you how wonderful this class is and how much we learned. We met wonderful new friends with Donna and Robbie. The food was great. Everyone was just wonderful

Fantastic experience! You'll cook a traditional 7-course meal with recipes from the hostess' own mother. Very enjoyable and you get a bit of history about the ingredients/plates as you go. The tasks are delegated between all participants: some will chop vegetables, some will prepare the spinach, etc._br/_ The tavern cooks all the food and at the end of the prep you all get to enjoy the meal together, family style!

What a great class. We had such a great time learning about Greek cuisine and the history of all the meals. I wish we would have done this on our first day instead of our last as it would've helped us pick out better meals during our visits.

What a great opportunity to learn how to cook authentic Greek dishes. Our host was fabulous at integrating tidbits of the culture into the class - that was an added bonus! The dishes came out surprisingly well - yum and they were authentic dishes! I don't cook sitting down and that's what we did the entire class. : I only wished that we had a bit more hands-on with all of the dishes. Overall all, however, I would do it again!

Our Greek cooking class was a very special part of the 3 days we had in Athens! Fofi, the instructor, was engaging and personable while making sure all members of the group got into the action with hands-on preparation. She kept up an agreeable, informative prattle about food, drink, Greek customs and sayings as the class went on that made the time and labor fly. Our group had two 15 year old girls who did not have much cooking experience, but they had a blast! We were joined by a Canadian grandmother and her 16 year old son, so there was some youthful giggling to complement the Laughing Yoga taking place above the tavern's cooking class room. Fofi provided written recipes when we left, so we were able to reproduce the scrumptous appetizers and roast lamb and potatoes upon our return stateside. This is a must do activity for foodies and families. Highly recommended!

Even in the low season end of November, the classes are running. Had a fantastic time with Eva and our group made up of an interesting mix of American ExPats, Canadian, Chinese, Dutch, and Scottish folks on Thanksgiving in Athens. the restaurant is easy to find and in a lovely, large private room, you get excellent instruction on how to make Spanakotiropita, Tzatziki Dip, roasted lamb with potatoes, zucchini balls, Dolmadakia gialantzi- vegetarian, Greek salad Horiatiki, and a Yogurt dessert with lemons. Everyone got along so well and we all got to sit out on the patio and enjoy our own prepared foods together with a glass of wine included.

Fofi was a fantastic guide to the world of Greek cooking. She was full of entertaining and educational anecdotes about the food we were making and about Greek history. The number of students was just right for cooking a meal and conversing as we ate together afterwards. This is a very well done class, I can't recommend it highly enough.

After being dropped at the wrong end of the street and having to walk and. Ask directions 5 times we finally arrived 10 minutes late after a 35 minute hike. Not a good start. But things only got better from there and our group of 6 were soon settled in the very comfortable and we'll set up room for our lesson. Fofi quickly made us feel at home and showed her love and knowledge of Greek cooking. Over the next 1.5 hours or so we all made pr prepared roast lamb and potatoes, spanakopita, zucchini balls, tzatziki, and a lemon desert. I may have forgotten one or two, yes, dolmathes. Once the lesson was over we were seated out at the Tavern Diavlos and served our meal. This was the ideal way to finish the evening even though we just could not manage to get through all the food we had prepared. Later in the evening we witnessed a massive storm with sheet lightning and thunder and people scurrying for cover. However, we were all very happy sitting the refinishing our meal and drinks and enjoying a very Grek experience. We would recommend this to anyone, even if you don't know one end of a kitchen from the other.
