Half-Day Private Tour: Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon
Athens, Greece
Steep in history on this private half-day excursion to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon. Corral a group of friends and delve into one of the ancient world's most important and impressive sites, the Temple of Poseidon. Learn how the Aegean got its name, its importance in Greek history, and of previous visitors from Theseus to Lord Byron during his own Grand Tour.
Your private Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon journey begins when you depart your hotel in the morning. Travel south through some of Athens pictorial southern suburbs, then continue toward the coastal road and Saronic gulf coast with its wonderful open sea views.
Relax during this drive, as your guide points out many historical aspects of the city along the way. Then enter the impressive site to learn of its mythology, history, cultural prominence, and significance in the ancient world.
As a unique geographical vantage point there is plenty of time to wonder at the magnificent views surrounding you on three sides of the site, extending far out to the islands of Kea and the Peloponnese. After absorbing the views, stop for lunch or drinks at the modern visitors center.
Please note: Our driver/guide is not allowed by law to accompany you into ticketed sites themselves. We collaborate with guides licensed to enter sites and can provide these if requested.
Without a doubt, one of the best tours we have taken and we take a lot!. A bit more cost for the private tour, but it felt like a friend was showing us the sights. Didn't have to worry about the always whining/late back to the bus fellow travelers- just us and our guide David. And David was amazing: friendly, smart, let us set the pace, answered our numerous questions about the sights and the country. Our pictures and memories of the day trip to Sounion are wonderful.

Excellent half day tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and the scenery is excellent. It's well worth doing this tour. Remember that you will be on an exposed peninsula so dress very warmly in winter!

Our driver's duty was simply to drive us there and back, this was basically a private taxi however I think the rate was a little better than a taxi simply because it was booked and paid for in advance. Our driver was very pleasant and we had a good conversation on the ride over and back. The temple itself, even if you get there another way, is definitely worth the trip. Very much intact with beautiful views from the temple over the water and surrounding area, this was maybe the most beautiful of all the temples and ruins we saw because of how well preserved the structure was with the backgrounds. It was also nice that we were there in April, when it is their Spring so the grass was green and new and there were lots of wildflowers.

This is worth seeing - Poseidon is my favorite so I couldn't miss this - Its a beautiful ruin and well kept - Scenery is very pretty - We did go to the cafe at the bottom of the bay and the food was delicous and well priced - Owners were nice and welcoming. Our guide was nice but did not see to have much to say about the ruins - Just thought we would hear more about the history there.
