Half-Day Walking Tour of Athens Historic Center
Athens, Greece
Explore the birthplace of drama, modern democracy and philosophy and follow in the footsteps of the ancients. On this 4-hour private walking tour of historic Athens with a local guide, experience the sweep of the city and visit the House of Greek Parliament, the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, the National Gardens, Zappeion Hall, the Olympian Zeus Temple, Hadrian’s Arch, Anafiotika, Monastiraki, Plaka, and Syntagma Square.
Meet your local guide at 9am or 5pm at Syntagma Square and set off to explore the heart of Athens. Begin at the House of Greek Parliament and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and watch the impressive changing of the guards. Continue toward the lush National Gardens and the neoclassical Zappeion Hall, and marvel at the surviving columns of the Olympian Zeus Temple and Hadrian’s Arch. From there, walk toward the Acropolis via the imposing pedestrian walkway of Dionyssiou Areopagitou.
Take a small break to enjoy a coffee or snack under the shadow of the Acropolis. Walk through Anafiotika, a neighborhood with traditional island-style colored houses underneath the stone slope of the Acropolis. Weave your way through Monastiraki, with its traditional Flea Market and lively square. After a break for a refreshing gelato, stroll around Plaka, the city’s oldest neighborhood, and find a maze of cobbled streets lined with neoclassical architecture, Byzantine churches and busy little shops. The tour will end where it began, at the central Syntagma Square.
