Private Tour: Gourmet Food Walking Tour in Athens

Athens, Greece

Step off the beaten track and awaken your senses on a 4-hour gourmet food walking tour in Athens, taken at a time that suits your schedule. Follow a private guide through Monastiraki Square and the central city market, Varvakios Agora, to spend a half-day sampling some of Athens’ finest street food. Feast on an array of authentic specialties, from sweet syrup Greek donuts to ‘koulóuria’ (sesame bread rings), and learn more about the culinary history of this incredible city with each bite. This private tour ensures undivided attention from a personal guide.

Meet your food-loving guide in Monastiraki Square to begin your tour. As you walk, listen to your guide share fascinating insights into Greek cuisine and explains the tastings that follow. Head into a centuries-old cafe to bite into your first Greek specialty of the day — koulóuria. A traditional Greek breakfast item, koulóuria is crunchy on the outside, but deliciously soft on the inside.

Next, dive into an enticing pastry shop to sample custard-filled filo squares and loukoumades. These golden puffs of delight are unlike any donut you’ve ever eaten before. Doused in sweet syrup and sprinkled with cinnamon and walnuts, loukoumades are delicious.

Continue onto your next stop and sink your teeth into a pie at an authentic Greek bakery, before sampling local cheese at one of district’s cheese stores. Then, head to the bustling meat and fish market of Varvakios Agora. Stroll past the many stalls, each bursting with color and aromatic produce, and taste some homegrown coffee. Unique in its taste, Greek coffee is brewed in a traditional small pot and served with foam on top and grounds at the bottom of the cup.

Next, visit some of the hidden specialty food stores to purchase tantalizingly fresh fruit, olives, cheese, ham and other alluring deli produce, before heading to a small souvenir shop to sample Greek yogurt, local wine, aged aromatized vinegar, organic olive oil and honey. Here, take the opportunity to buy some gifts for your friends and family, if you so wish.

Finish your tour with a wander down Evripidou Street. Heady with the scent of clove and cinnamon, this exotic street is famous for the herb and spice shops that have thrived here since the early 20th century. Enjoy a final tasting before ending your private culinary exploration back at Monastiraki Square.

What a fun afternoon with Dorela walking and EATING our way through Athens. We visited the meat and fish market, stopped for traditional phyllo treats, smoked meats and cheese, Greek salad, ouzo, vegetables, souvlaki, Greek coffee and a special treat of donuts w/honey. There was no need to eat before or after the tour and we learned so much about the local culture and definitely the food of the community. Our guide was lovely and personable, we had a great time!

If I could add to the 5 star rating I would. Irene was incredible. Her huge personality and knowledge of Athens' food scene were a perfect mixture.

Irena was a fantastic guide. I highly recommend this tour...just don't eat much prior as you will be VERY full when you are done. A very thorough review of greek food and great conversation too.

This is a definite must while in Athens. The greek food has so many outside influences it is very interesting to hear about the history of Greece through its food. Our guide, Irene, was absolutely lovely. She had a great relationship with all the local vendors and was able to grab samples of fresh fruit, olives and nuts as we walked from one schedule location to the next. We would definitely book this tour again.

Sophia was wonderful!!! She went above and beyond all day long, even helped us find a money exchange and the Segway office afterward. it was like spending the day with a friend. I wrote about it my blog and posted pics. Nothing beats having a local person, and especially someone has smart and knowledgeable as Sophia, to show you the insider's perspective. This was a highlight of our time in Athens!!

This was a good time. One of the highlights of our trip. We had Kosta. He was incredibly personable. Went to local, non-tourist places. Food was great. We just finished a two week trip Athens, Rome, Seville. My kids 16,19, 22 are telling me to make sure I mention that this was their favorite activity.

This was the best food tour I've ever been on! Ana shared the culture, history, origins of the food we tasted and the places we visited. I can't recommend this highly enough we had fun, tried authentic Greek dishes and expanded our understanding of Athens. As an added bonus the tour oriented us to the layout of the city so walking to attractions and shopping on days following was a breeze. Ana took her time and let us enjoy ourselves. Great tour and great guide!

This food tour is amazing. I lucked out and Sofia was my guide. Even better, I was the only one on the tour. Sofia was wonderful - very personable and efficient. She called ahead so that the food items were ready when we arrived. You get to sample many Greek dishes and Sofia explained how they were used in every day Greek life. You will have more food than you can eat. I highly recommend this tour and ask for Sofia!

My husband and I had an opportunity to spend time with Sophia touring the part of Athens that most tourists never experience. Most importantly, Sophia was a terrific tour guide - warm, bubbly and welcoming - which made the entire experience that much more enjoyable. She started us off with a typical Greek breakfast - Spanikopita spinach pie, Galaktoboureko custard pie, Bougatsa custard or meat filled filo, etc. We wandered into a Loukoumades bakery to enjoy fresh fried dough balls covered in honey. She took us to a meat market where absolutely everything was on display I had a bit of trouble with this, so we moved quickly into the fish market. We then meandered into the produce market where we had the opportunity to taste fresh olives and nuts from the local vendors. We stopped for authentic Greek coffees and learned how they come to temperature while sitting in a briki coffee decanter in hot sand. We visited Miran, an amazing Greek delicatessen where we sampled traditional dried meats and cheeses. Sophia rounded out our visit at a final shop where we had a wine, olive oil and vinegar tasting. Sophia made us a traditional Greek salad that we enjoyed before ending our visit. I would definitely recommend this outstanding tour to any foodie visiting Athens. Be sure to make a note that you would like to request Sophia!

You will be stuffed with deliciousness on this tour! Our guide, Sofia, was super knowledgeable and fun. We started with cheese and spinach pies, moved on to the best souvlaki I've ever had and then on to Greek coffee, Greek donuts, a walk through the food market to sample nuts and olives. All things Greek! Sofia picked out some fresh vegetables and prepared a Greek salad for us at our next stop while we sipped wine and tasted olive oil and vinegars. Think you're done? Nope! On to sample meats and cheese with a little raki. I know I'm leaving things out and it was all good!

Dont miss this tour. It's a well organized walking tour with a nice and knowledable guide Anna. This tour became a private tour for me and my wife with the the tour guide. We walk through some places to taste the local gourmet, local fish market and also a unique coffee cafe at the center of Athens. Thank you Anna.

This tour was one of the best parts of my stay in Athens. My friend and I were treated to an incredible day of exploring the city and trying local food. Our guide, Anabelia, was great! She knew all the best places away from the tourist traps and was great company. The private tour felt more like a day out with a friend showing us around her city. The food was delicious, and it was so much fun to visit the places where things were bought or made we never would have found the fish market or the street filled with herbal shops on our own! After the tour, Anabelia even provided us a list of the names of everywhere we stopped and what we tasted, so we would know what to look for on our next trip. If you want to see more of the day to day life in Athens while exploring and trying new things, I highly recommend this tour!

Totally worth it! The Monastiraki area of Athens is awash with interesting food and this tour is a great way to hit a few spots you were unlikely to find on your own. It's a private tour so the pacing is perfect and our guide, Irene, was a particularly wonderful host. I'm happy we went early in our trip because we went back to the deli/market area to pick up ingredients for a picnic on Philopappos Hill.

We chose to do this tour after flying a 10 hr. red eye with no sleep. Best decision for our 1st afternoon in Athens! It was informative, fun and helped us get a lay of the land for the rest of our time there. Our guide Ireni was interesting and answered any questions we had about the Greek culture. Don't miss this one! It's a casual walk with sitting at restaurants throughout the tour and tasting local foods.Very easy to do!

This was a wonderful walking tour. Our guide, Eirini, did an excellent job and showed us many wonderful places. We had excellent tastes of food and walked away very full from our tastings. We were able to taste dishes we haven't had in our previous trips to Greece. The walk through the Central market, Meat and Fish market was a huge highlight for us as we wanted to visit these anyways. She made us a wonderful Greek salad as we sampled wine and even some ouzo. Her knowledge of the foods was very good also. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to sample Greek dishes. Be sure to go hungry!! Rick and Ed

This was amazing. It was even better that what we expected. This is a must in Athens. We really enjoyed expending our afternoon walking around Athens while enjoying some of best food and drinks Athens have to offer. My favorite thing was having Chai tea at this old coffee roaster follow by a food demonstration at a local shop. There I got to enjoy a delicious greek salad that was amazing. We even purchased some of the vinegar they used on the salad. If you have a few days in Athens, this is a must.

This is a must in Athens. We took this tour on our last full day in Athens. Kostas was our guide and we really bonded with him. We spent most of the time in non-tourist Central Athens. Highlights were a special coffee shop and a bakery making loukoumades, a Greek version of Krispy Kreme covered with honey--I have already looked up the recipe. We spent time in the markets--meat, fruit, vegetable. Kostas made us a salad with fresh tomatoes from the market oregano, feta cheese, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. Special! We sampled olive oil, balsamic vinegar, wine, and deli meats. We were full and satisfied and very happy. Kostas showed us the way to the Athens Archeological Museum to complete a great and memorable day. Don't miss this tour!

We have done a number of food tours in different places but this was by far the best we have ever done. Over four hours we visited and sampled almost everything that was Greek. Our guide Sophia was amazing and nothing was too much trouble. We were taken to places and shops that you would not normally get to see. We would strongly recommend the private tour as there is more flexibility when there is only two people.

Kostas, our guide, has so much knowledge about the food and the area. We met them, he and his trainees, Sophia and Christina, at the Monastiraki square. From there we walked to a Greek bakery and had Spanakopita, and kotopita, both made from phyllo dough, simply made with flour water and olive oil. Next we visited krivos, an Athenian Cafe du Monde, to enjoy fingers licking good loukoumades, a fried dough made of flour, yeast, water, then doused with honey and dusted with cinnamon, kind of like beignets. Then we walked through the meat market, the fish market, and finally the fruit and vegetable market, where Kostas bought some fresh Greek tomatoes. Time for a cup of coffee with friends at Mokka. Greek coffee, medium sweet, served with orange cake. Then Kostas read our fortunes from the coffee grinds left at the bottom of our coffee cup. We passed by the old Greek stock market on the way to the deli. We were in for a treat with lessons of olive oil, vinegar, wine, and a tomato salad simply made by Kostas with tomatoes, Feta cheese, oregano, Tossed with extra virgin olive oil that was sprayed with balsamic vinegar. And let's not forget Greek yogurt with honey. Kostas seemed very at home in the deli. Then we were on our way to Miran, the 100 year old pastrami shop. There we tasted smoked turkey, pastrami, bacon, and three cheeses made with varying degree of cow milk, goat, and sheep milk. To end the tour, we had pork slouvaki. 4 hours of walking, eating, learning the simple but wonderful taste of Greek food.

Excellent tour, introducing us to the best Greek food Athens has to offer. Cost as was both knowledgeable and considerate, given our relative immobility. I fully recommend this tour to all foodies. Highlights - too many to mention, including one of the best delis we've been in for some time, a remarkable meat and cheese emporium and fantastic souvlaki to finish.

Review by:   Susanna Z,    March 2017 Review: 5 star rating: Highly Recommended
Kostas truly gave us a flavor of Athens. All of the foods and drinks were amazing. Loved the doughnuts. Greek salad personally made in front of us by Kostas, the guide, was delicious and we had an education on both olive oil and the vinegars. The meat market was a bit unsettling but totally fascinating to walk through. Souvlaki at the end was a full meal on its own so no need for dinner that night. But even better than the food was Kostas' commentary about the history of some of the items, the local anecdotes and an intellectual conversation about the current state of the economy. We had wonderful conversation the whole afternoon and felt like we had a new friend at the end of the tour.

We took this tour on our first full day in Athens with our guide Kostas. We had a great experience by learning the local foods, customs, and pronunciations. We enjoyed stopping in eateries where foods were made by local residents. The tour gave us a good sense of the layout of Plaka and surrounding neighborhoods.

What an amazing experience! My mom and I thought this was one of our favorite experience while in Athens. We learned about the people, culture and history. And all while sampling delicious food from all parts of the city and getting a bit of exercise via walking - the meant and fish markets and fruit and veg stalls, the coffee house, the all of it was fantastic. And the LUKAMADES. Heavenly!! I can't recommend this tour enough.

It was nice walking around checking out food places. Our guide was nice and friendly but we got the feeling that his main goal was to take us shopping rather than check out the local cuisine as he tried to persuade us to buy things at every place we shopped.
