Historical Walking Tour of Tamaki from Auckland

Experience the cultural heart of Auckland, on our 2-hour "Home Fires of Tāmaki" walking tour. A short trip from the hustle of the central city, this magnificent whenua (land) is one of Auckland’s most tranquil locations. Your experienced guide will provide a first-hand experience of the rich history of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei (local tribe), cultural traditions and village life in modern day society. Soak in picturesque 360° views towards Orākei Marae (traditional meeting house), Rangitoto Island, and Auckland City. Explore abandoned barracks and native bush, as you walk while our experienced guide shares history and cultural tales of our tribe and Auckland.

You will be collected from a central city location (SkyCity or iSite Princes Wharf) and dropped off at Michael J Savage Memorial where your guide will meet you. Begin your experience with a Māori karakia (blessing) and spectacular views of Auckland City and the Waitematā Harbour.

As you begin your walk, learn about an ancient stream and some of New Zealand's native plants with age old medicinal uses. As you explore the whenua (land) of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, see how our people have transformed the area with our award-winning, chemical-free regeneration project Ko Te Pūkākī, planting thousands of native trees over the last 15 years. Your guide will share a fascinating insight as to how the cultural traditions of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei are practised in modern day society, and how these have adapted as New Zealand's biggest city continues to grow.

Army barracks built many years ago still stand and are home to beehives. Sample fresh fruit in our orchard, with a view of Auckland not found anywhere else. Follow the trail through our nursery and gardens, one of which is planted and maintained by the Auckland City Mission. See the cultural hub of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Orākei Marae before finishing with a light picnic lunch.
