Orange, Les Baux de Provence and Arles Small Group Day Trip

Avignon, France

Visit Orange and start with a panoramic tour to discover the Roman Triumphal Arch, a symbol of the Roman imperial glory, and then visit the Antic Theatre (entrance included) one of the best preserved theatres in the Roman Empire with its stage wall intact.

Driving tour in the vineyards between Orange and Chateauneuf-du-Pape and stop for a wine tasting in a cellar. You will try the most prestigious red wine in the Rhone valley and visit the winery founded in Chateauneuf-du-Pape 100 years ago. In a traditional shop, you will find a wide range of wines and provencal specialties to buy.

Stop at the Antiques of Saint Remy de Provence (Triumphal Arch and funeral monument) among olive trees, landscape painted several times by Van Gogh.

Visit Les Baux de Provence, a village set upon a rock at 245 meters high and in the spectacular historical center, see the museum of santons, the Hotel des Porcelets, beautiful 16th century houses, the St Vincent Church.

Lastly, a walking tour of Arles, with it's rich architectural heritage, the famous Roman amphitheater and theatre, the Romanesque Cathedral and the famous places painted by Van Gogh, including La maison jaune, Le café la nuit and Le jardin de l'hotel Dieu.

Free time for lunch and market in Orange (on Thursdays) and Arles (on Saturdays). The order of visit will then change accordingly.

From April, 2017, you will enjoy the audiovisual show in the Carrieres de Lumieres (Quarry of Light): reproductions of famous paintings are displayed on the walls of the quarry while music is on. The show is closed in January and February, more time will be allowed in the village of Les Baux during this period.

The places visited were great but the guide was extremely rude. We got more information from brochures and signage than from the guide. Unfortunately, we were assigned this guide for 2 tours and were stuck with her for 2 days. She was equally rude and discourteous on the other day.

Love the day trip. Packed with information about the places, sights and sound. And was totally amazed by Carrieres de Lumieres. It was a marvellous experience and best to see it for yourselves instead of reading it in a review. A well spent day.

Even though it rained heavily this tour still worked out. The guide was knowledgeable and interested in his clients. His commentary as a result reflected the client's interest. Less time Orange and more in Arles would be better. The wine tasting was good. Learnt a lot about French wines. Thanks Remy for a good day!

My mom and I needed a break from driving ourselves around France and this was a great day tour to take the stress off and let someone do the guiding! We had a very happy, relaxed day!

The trip covered alot of ground, which was great. But, our group was a half hour late and I felt like we could've covered the same sites by ourselves. The group was not cohesive, that could've made a difference, but you never really know the demographic of the rest of the group until the day of. The light show at the quarry was not of interest to us and it seemed as if the rest of the group was in agreement. But, nevertheless we had a scheduled 45 minute stop there. Our guide was very nice and knowledgeable. The personalities in the group were a lot to manage and he did the best job he could. All in all, because we had a rental car on the trip, we would most likely opt to do these trips on our own if we were to do it all over again.

Wonderful tour! Our guide, Remi, was so sweet and funny, and made the trip delightful for everyone. Our tour guide really made the trip special. His knowledge of the area was very apparent and very appreciated. Was considerate of our needs, and different desires on the trip. Very worthwhile.

This was a great tour. Melanie picked us up in Avignon at the appointed time. The van was spacious. Melanie was very conversant in English and extremely knowledgeable about all of the areas that were toured. Melanie made for a very wonderful experience and we came away from the tour with a much greater knowledge of southern France.

It was a memorable day trip, covering many places I could not have done myself. Our guide Violette was knowledgeable and helpful, showing several points with handheld illustrations._br/_ I would recommend this trip, especially from September onward as public transport to Les Baux stops.

Our tour was very good. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed the towns of Les Baux and Orange as well as wine tasting in Chateau Neuf du Papes. We would have liked longer in Arles and went to St Remy which we were not expecting. All in all very enjoyable.

This tour is really two separate tours stuck together. You go north, and then come back to Avignon to pick up other people before going in the opposite direction. I think this led to a lot of extra time in the van, which was unfortunate. _br/_ We got off to a really late start due to traffic, and then were delayed again when our guide figured out we had left someone in Avignon. Luckily we didnt have to go back for them, but all of these delays ended up costing us lunch time. _br/_ The first part of the tour was nice the winery tour was good, and seeing Orange was also interesting. _br/_ However, for the second part of the tour we picked up passengers who had requested Spanish. What this meant was that the tour guide would say everything in English, and then repeat herself in Spanish. This was fine while we were in the car, but was really horrible during the walking tour of Arles. We would hear a spiel about a site for a few minutes, then just stand around while it was repeated. I think it really slowed down the tour. I probably would not book tours through this company again.

Very good tour including Roman ruins in Orange and Arles, and the unique hill top city of Les Baux. Enough free time to roam about and take in all the history.

Excellent tour for experiencing both the Roman sites and learning about Van Gogh. Melanie was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. If you only have a short time in Provence, this tour maximizes use of your time. Each stop was definitely worthwhile.

As with many tours, there was silmply not enough time to see things in depth. Also, I wished the tour guide gave us more information about the places, the people, the monuments. Otherwise, it was enjoyable and the weather was great.

This tour gave an excellent overview of the Provence region, and every town we stopped at had something different and special to offer, and our tour leader provided an excellent and informed commentary. All three key aspects of the tour were very enjoyable and time was available for us to enjoy the features of each, e.g. the Arles market, the Roman amphitheatre in Orange and the beautiful village of Les Baux de Provence.

The trip was interesting and extremely intensive. It is a pity that the minibus comes back to Avignon in the middle of the trip, for the traffic there is rather heavy. The advertisement does not explain that it is in fact a modular trip changing passengers in the middle of the day. All in all, however, the trip was highly rewarding. The short visit to the mental hospital where Van Gogh stayed during the last year of his life was especially moving.

We had a fantastic experience. Our tour guide picked us up exactly at the time we were told. Selene was extremely professional yet very friendly and accomodating. She was very versed on the subject matter and answered all of our questions. Our day could not have turned out better. Lastly, after we left the vineyard where the wine tasting took place (probably half way back to our apt.) my husband realized that he had left his jacket with his camera behind. With the consent of the other person on our tour the guide called the vineyard to make sure that someone was still there and returned to pick up my husband's stuff. I think that she certainly went out of her way to accommodate us. Again, I would recommend Viator to friends and family based on several experiences of using their services from tours to pick up service to the airport. We will continue to use Viator in the future without hesitation.

We wish there had been less time in Arles and a lit more time in Les Baux. We felt cheated that we only had an hour there. Our guide was very good and took a little extra time at the end to take some ohotos of Avignon from across the river. It was a very nice day.

It would have been a great tour if not for the less than competent tour guide who complained about the lack of road signs at the beginning of the tour and predictably, he lost his way. We spent one hour making a detour! He was more interested to talk to the group members sitting in front in the van about their other tour experiences rather than explaining the sights on our itinerary. We did not even know his name as he did not introduce himself. Very disappointing and a waste of money.

Wonderful opportunity to see some special places. Orange theater really spectacular. Spending time with videos in galleries behind bought it alive. Loved Le Baux and would have liked more time there. Arles a great place to wander. A bit irritated that commercial arrangements with chocolate factory and wine tasting drove the schedule. Knowledgeable guide.

This was a very interesting experience, which covered the key historical and other areas of interest around Avignon. Our guide, Caroline, was fluent in several languages, very knowledgeable of the area and maintained our interest throughout the tour. The wine tasting was a stand out element.

Wonderful tour, excellent guide. We packed so much more into our day than we could have on our own, yet we still had plenty of free time to explore the places we visited at our own pace and focus on what interested us. Great value, especially if you have limited time on your trip. Whether you are interested in Van Gogh, Roman ruins, or great wine, there's something for everyone on this itinerary.

This did not start out okay. When we arrived in Avignon the day before our tour, we asked our host from our B and B to call and confirm our pick-up at their B and B. She was told that we were not scheduled for the tour the next day (even though we had prepaid and had our voucher!). After a long conversation a tour was arranged. Over all we were not very impressed by the tour. We raced by towns while trying to look out the windows to see what we were passing. We spent way too much time wine tasting and not enough time actually seeing the villages. And if you are in the middle seat of the van you can't see much of the view as we raced by. Then a lot of time was wasted going back to Avignon in the middle to drop people off and pick up new people. This is not what we paid for. Everyone in the van should have been there for the full day tour to make the most of our time. Very disappointing! Not worth the money.

We (a married couple and a female friend, all about 65), did this tour in late May 2013._br/_ The guide, Anais? was very good. The day started slowly, we went to a winery and we spent far too long there, but that's what you get when you do a tour, they try to meet everyone's interests. This time it wasn't ours. We could have spent more time in Orange, where the amazing Roman theatre is. It is one of 3 in the world, but this one is in the best condition, and is still being used for all kinds of musical events. We did a short walking tour of Arles, which was a very important Roman city, so has an amphitheatre and lots of other Roman sites, mostly ruins. Arles was one place that Van Gogh lived, so part of the tour took us to some of the sites he had painted. I liked that. We also visited a small village Les Baux de Provence, built into cliffs, now only has 22 people living there, but over 1.5 million visitors.

Very nice tour. Our guide stopped at Glanum, which we thought was the highlight of the tour. They should make Glanum a headline item in the tour and allow more time there. Glanum is an ancient Roman city built on ruins of settlements from two earlier civilizations.

The tour guide was great (forgot her name). Loved the small group of 8 and the pick up at the hotel. Great sites to see - only complaint is that we did not get enough time at each spot. The tour is set up as a morning and afternoon tour. You can buy one or the other or both times. We did the whole day so we came back to Avignon to drop off the morning only people and get the afternoon only people. An afternoon couple was late and we waited half hour for them. The guide did extend the trip which was nice. Seem silly to double back to town but all in all a great day!!! Loved the Roman ruins - some of the best in Europe!!!

Too rushed. Not enough time in each of the places. Would rather spend a bit more time in each with less coverage... almost running all way through... But the Les Baux and Arles are very beautiful - a not-to-miss for any Van Gogh fan, not necc with this tour though.

The tour was great! We had been traveling by trains, and it was nice to get to some smaller towns. I really enjoyed the free time in each location to do our own thing, and well as the information provided at each stop! It was a fantastic day!! We were able to see more in one day in if we had done it on our own!

On the day I added the Pont Du Gard site as well. Its a must to visit, beautiful roman remains. Enjoyed the les baux village and pont du gard trip very much. Les baux is absolutely beautiful. Orange is one of the town we visited. Arles is full of roman history and Van Gogh paintings. Chateau de pape is wine tasting and big area of wine yard. Very good interesting places - for solo travelers worth to join this tour esp for the Les Baux and Pont Du Gard site as its is not easy to access via public transport.

really awing, again too rushed for our older bodies to make the trip part of it being uphill. We would finally catch up with the group when the guide was finished with the talk and we heard it not , not seeing what we wished worrying about catching up and wathcing where we were steppping on the cobblestones.
