Private Rhone Valley Wine Tour from Avignon: Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Tavel

Avignon, France

On this private wine tour from Avignon, admire the beauty of Provence as you travel to the famous wine villages of Tavel and Chateauneuf-du-Pape for wine tastings. Sip signature rosé wines and red wines — reputed to be the favorite of French kings and popes — while learning about winemaking in southern France’s stunning Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. At the end of your wine tour, you’ll take a panoramic tour of Avignon, passing the medieval city walls and seeing the famous Pont Saint-Bénézet (Saint-Bénézet bridge).

You’ll be picked up from your Avignon hotel for your morning or afternoon wine tour. Traveling by comfortable air-conditioned mini-coach, learn about the history and wine of Provence from your private guide as you make your way through southern France's beautiful countryside.

Soak up the vineyard-covered landscapes as you venture 20 minutes northwest to Tavel, a charming village that’s historically famous for its rosé wines. Tavel wines are reputed to have been a favorite of kings Philippe le Bel and Louis XIV, the Popes of Avignon, the 19th-century French novelist Honoré de Balzac and the 20th-century American writer Ernest Hemingway.

Head to a local winery to try these world-renowned rosé wines and learn about the town’s winemaking heritage from your guide and sommelier.

Then, continue driving through the beautiful countryside. Cross back over the Rhône to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, another famous wine village firmly entwined with papal history. One of the most renowned appellations of the southern part of the Rhône Valley, Châteauneuf-du-Pape makes more wine than the entire northern Rhône region!

Visit a local winery to sip Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s signature reds, like Grenache noir or Mourvèdre. Notice the distinct sweet and rustic flavors of these Rhône wines, which often exhibit aromas of dried herbs common in Provence.

After your wine tastings, your guide will take you to Avignon to view the medieval city walls and the remains of 12th-century bridge over the Rhône. Pont Saint-Bénézet, also known as Pont d'Avignon, was frequently damaged by flooding but never rebuilt after the 17th century. You'll also see the Petit Palais and the Romanesque Cathedral of Notre-Dame-des-Doms and after a wonderful panoramic view of the city, your guide will take you back to your hotel.

Very knowledgeable tour guide! He knew a great deal about the area, history, wine, and everything else we inquired about. Misplaced his card though, and unfortunately we can't remember his name.

Jeremy picked us up right on schedule and we toured the Rhone Valley on our way to Tavel and Chateauneuf du Pape. We had many questions and he answered them plus added local flavor about the area. We stopped for photos and even toured the town of Tavel since we were a bit early for the wine tasting. It was a very satisfying experience for all four of us! Thank you Jeremy and Viator.

Julien was wonderful and we enjoyed the tour so much! It was just my husband and I for the tour. The car was comfortable and air conditioned. We learned a lot and had fun at the same time. Wine was great and we got some dinner recommendations too! Highly recommend this tour.

Our guide, Julian, was very helpful and knowledgeable. He was also adaptable as one place we were to visit was closed and he quickly substituted with an excellent replacement. As I had presumed, the vineyards were glorious despite the stiff mistral wind, and we tasted several wines and learned about them. The wine museum we visited was better than many such commercial ventures and had well written English captions to the exhibits.

Caroline (our tour guide) picked us up right on time. She provided excellent commentary on the beautiful countryside as we drove through on the way to our two winery stops. We had time for a couple brief stops along the way to look at scenery. She was very knowledgeable about the area and about the history of wine production in the region. She also spoke excellent English (and Italian. And Chinese.). She topped it off by finding the exact chocolate shop my wife visited 17 years ago. The Mercedes minibus was very comfortable and held the 8 of us nicely. If you like wine, this is the tour for you!

Davide often spoke in French to the people in the front of the van without the mike. Those in the rear could not hear or understand. The air conditioning did not work and when he was asked to turn it on he responded that maybe we had had too much wine...rude and unnecessary. He later apologized--but privately. The van was overcrowded and when I asked him what town we were going through he said it was not important, it was not on the tour and then returned to talking to the 2 ladies in the front. He was more polite the second day.

This is a straight wine tasting tour. I expected it was a winery tour that I'd have learned more about wine making, tasting, etc.

What can we say? Maybe it was the great guide, the chateaus, the wine...a great experience. What a way to spend an afternoon! We went to three tastings, and the folks were amazingly gracious. It really changed our view of the French wine industry. If you can spare the half day, do this! These are wine lovers, not just tour guides with a minivan. In fact, even the driver bought a few bottles for his collection. The countryside was spectacular, and not having to worry about driving was the icing on the cake.
