Small Group Provence and Lavender Museum Day Trip from Avignon

Avignon, France

Spend a full day immersed in the lavender fields and picturesque villages of Provence on this day trip from Avignon. Drive through purple fields of fragrant lavender in full summer bloom, and stop in Sault or Roussillon to browse the lavender shops and wander a traditional Provençal market. Visit the stunning Luberon village of Gordes and end with a visit to the Lavender Museum in Coustellet.

Enjoy personalized attention from your expert guide on this small-group tour, limited to eight people.

You’ll be picked up from your Avignon hotel in the morning for your full-day tour. Traveling by 8-passenger minivan, enjoy scenic views as you drive through Provence’s lavender fields in full summer bloom — a truly beautiful sight!

Stop in the village of Sault or Roussillon — depending on which is most in bloom — for free time to wander town by foot. Browse lavender shops selling exquisite essential oils, soaps and honey, and visit a traditional open-air market selling a shimmering palette of fruit, vegetables and flowers. You’ll also have time for lunch (own expense).

Continue driving along Provence’s picturesque country roads across wild lavender fields and past small villages including St Jean and Lioux. Stop to visit the dry stone village of Gordes, often considered one of the most beautiful villages in France.

After a photo stop at Senanque Abbey, a Cistercian monument surrounded by a wonderful lavender field (depending on the blooming season this might be replaced by a longer stay at the museum), it's on to the famous Lavender Museum in Coustellet.

Discover the wonders of lavender from the informative video, exhibition and distillation demonstration, revealing how these wonderful flowers are transformed into oils, fragrances and beauty products. You’ll have a chance at the end to purchase some of your own.

Then, relax on the drive back to Avignon, arriving in the evening.

Please note: This tour is seasonal and runs from June to August only. The photo stop at Senanque Abbey is only included from June 15 to July 15. Outside of this time, the tour will include more time in Gordes.

We were blessed with Remy as our tour guide. He was knowledgeable, helpful and very communicative and I would like to thank him for giving us an excellent day out! He went out of his way to be helpful, especially as we were doing the lavender tour right at the end of the season. We found lots of lavender fields in the hills as well as visiting the lavender museum an being fortunate to visit a lavender farm/distillery in action. The tour was well planned, allowing stops in Gordes, where we were able to explore the market as well as the village itself and another charming village, the name of which I have forgotten! There were lots of photo opportunities and Remy was kind enough to take some photos of his tourists, by request.

I absolutely loved my full day Lavender sightseeing tour with Remy. He allowed a decent amount of time at both Gordes and Sault to look around the town, eat lunch and shop at the markets. We had plenty of opportunities to take photos. Make sure you try the Lavender ice cream!

We were in Provence at the very end of the lavender harvest so we missed the grand visual display but there were still lavender fields for us to stop and explore. We also made a stop at a farm to see the oil harvesting process in progress and had a chance to buy lavender oil direct from the producer which was much cheaper than it was in the Lavender museum which ended the tour. I could have done without the commercial Lavender museum ending. I didn't learn as much about the farming and processing of lavender as I did at the farm and I felt I was mostly there to be encouraged to spend money on overpriced items, yet I suppose that is a part of the economy of the region as well. Anyway, the majority of the tour was a delight and we were so glad we took it. Our guide was pleasant and informative as well.

This tour is best taken the Lavender is in full bloom. I can only imagine the country side filled with the beautiful purple flowers. There was still plenty of Lavendin to be seen. You have to take the tour to learn the difference between Lavender and Lavendin. Watching the distilling process of the Lavender was fascinating and the smells throughout the region was soothing and relaxing. Our guide Anais was the consummate professional and since she was born in the area her knowledge was unsurpassed.

It was a stunning trip. I expect more time at the Senanque Abbey as 20 mins sounds not enough for phototaking and shopping. I highly recommend this trip to everyone. Our tourguide communicated very clearly and friendly

I booked this trip as part of an Xmas present for my mum- it was well worth it! Frederic was a lovely guide and took us to some beautiful places, finishing in the lavender fields was the highlight of the day.

The guide is nice, but she didn't have my phone number, so at first it's a little hard for us to find each other. The trip is good in total, we saw beautiful lavender fields, visited Aix-en-provence, a small village and some museums. But I hope the trip can include more interesting and famous places.

An amazing day, Julian was our tour guide extrodinaire. Brilliant. There aren't enough stars provided to rate it highly enough. I'm not usually one for guided tours, preferring to explore on my own, but this is a Must Do tour! Thank you Julian so much for a great day, awesome people to share it with as well

There are not enough words to describe the beauty of the lavender fields of Provence. This all day tour took us to many breathtaking spots at which we enjoyed the purples and blues of these beautiful flower fields. As an added treat, we also saw a number of fields of sunflowers - Van Gogh's inspiration. The Lavender Museum is included on the trip. Our informative guide was also a masterful driver those mountain roads are not for faint-of-heart drivers.

I wanted to give this tour 5 stars, and it was very good, the guide Melani went out of her way to ensure we visited some great lavender fields. However, for me personally there was a very big disappointment, that we didn't visit the Senanque Abbey, as per the iconic picture on the website, and as per the itinerary. I had actually been spurred on to book the holiday to Provence, at the early part of July, and take this tour, in order that I would be able to see this specific, beautiful vista. When I booked via the website, the tour info was very specific about the dates that they would visit the Senanque Abbey, 15th June to 15th July only so I booked within that period. When I got on the tour and specifically asked when we would be going to Senanque Abbey, the guide told me that the lavender had been pulled up this year in front of the Abbey, so, if I insisted on going she would take us, but that actually there was nothing to see in the way of lavender there! I had to agree that there was no point, and no on else wanted to go under those circumstances either. I felt that knowing this was the case, the local tour company should not have used this iconic picture on the Viator website, and it should not have been in the itinerary that it was to be visited. Very misleading and for me personally very disappointing. But you cannot take away from the beauty of the lavender, and the sunflowers. That was worth seeing.

An excellent tour including all the centres of interest that we had pre-identified. The tour guide allowed appropriate time at each stop and was very cheerful and helpful - even included a visit to Senanque Abbey on request.

Sorry for delay in review. Great tour great day. Francoise (sp?) was lovely and did a good job - felt sorry for her having to try talk over 2 very rude constantly talking guests in the front seat which meant it was difficult for the others of us to hear Francoise talking. Felt the day was just a little bit rushed, however there was a lot to fit in and we had to keep on the move. Pick-up was exactly on time and the vehicle was perfect for our sized group. No complaints (except for rudeness and lateness of several of the other travellers which is outside Viator's control!!)

Our experience on this trip was fantastic…from booking all the way to the end of the trip…Everything was easy, fun and stress-free. Our driver and guide was wonderful: friendly, helpful, and great company in showing us around Avignon. He even helped us get some great spots for photos with less frequented tourists. Overall, the trip was wonderful and would recommend it to anyone interested in visiting the area. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Very good tour but we tried for 2 days to get hold of the company to confirm pick up point and the Tourism office in Avignon phoned them in the end to confirm. I would recommend that the 2 and a half hours in Rossouline be shortened with an hour to accommodate a visit to the Abbey in the afternoon.

Viola! Lavendin was blooming only at this time, but the vibrant fields of purple were just as gorgeous. (lavendin is a hybrid of fine lavender) the museum at the end was a nice touch and the shopping in the village Sault was excellent. Tip: buy lavender goods at the market with cash -- they're just as excellent quality but without the high prices at the museum shop! visited many lovely villages which were also scenic, making it not just a day full of lavender, but Provence in general.

Robin was super friendly and informative. He told us stories and background of the towns. We definitely enjoyed our day out with him. One suggestion for improvement...As it was our first time in those towns (Roussillon and Gordes) that we got dropped off, it's probably worth the extra 15 mins to show us around before free time.

Emilie, the tour guide, was excellent. We had an entire day. Most of it was spent stopping for a photo op at every lavender field she could see. Ok, snap the photo and leave. But we lingered and lingered for maybe 20 mins or longer at each field. Then when it came to our stop in Gordes, we had only 45 mins or so Rousillion was a wonderful thrill, and I'm elated we were there. However, one or two lavender fields is great. Every one of them is overkill and a waste of our time and money. The lavender museum is ok, a gold mine, money-maker. I don't want to know THAT much about lavender. Again, overkill.

Beautiful! Loved all the stops on the way as well. Appreciated the independence we were also given at each site. Perhaps could have been a bit shorter, however obviously the amount of time spent on the tour was necessary for transit purposes. Overall a great experience and highly recommended!

First of all, the guide we had was absolutely terrific, very patient and explained us in an interesting way about all the places we've been. The trip itself was amazing, with some stunning Lavender fields, and very nice villages and views along the way. I enjoyed it very much! It's definitely a 'must do' trip when you come for a vacation in Provence.

A busy day, but such beautiful places were visited. The guide knew where to find lavender fields that were in full bloom and not crowded by large bus loads of tourists. The villages selected for a visit were extremely well chosen, rich in history and exciting to roam the streets. Good value for money.

Fantastic tour. The lavender flowers in some fields were not in full bloom when we did the tour (end of June 2012) so the colours were not so vibrant. However, our guide (Ann) took us to other fields where the flowers were blooming more. The lavender museum and the lavender distillery farm were also interesting to visit. A different tour from the rest, however, very special and enjoyable.

Beautiful lavender fields! It would have been nice to have more time at the Abbeye de Senanque and the towns (Gordes and Sault). Perhaps skipping one of the fields so we can have more time for the other sites would be better.

Another very very good experience at Provence, tailored especially for anyone who is interested in lavander, its products, cultivation etc. All the stops that were made in several lavaner fields and the museum where good organized and the time was adequate. Maybe we could have an additional 10 minutes time at Senanque Abbey, but this does not take away the general feeling which was very positive.

Our guide, Virginie, was wonderful, and we loved the tour. She took us to the lavender museum, lavender fields, a local lavender farm where they were in the process of making lavender oil, as well as a number of small towns. She was entertaining, and informative, and we would book another tour with her anytime.
