Van Gogh in Provence Small-Group Day Trip

Avignon, France

Follow in the footsteps of a Post-Impressionist master on this 4- to 5-hour Van Gogh in Provence small-group day trip. Follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps through the Roman ruins in St-Rémy de Provence. Wander the cobbled streets of Les Baux de Provence with your guide, and admire the Museum of Santons and the St Vincent Church. Visit UNESCO-listed Arles and discover many of the sites which stirred Van Gogh’s creativity. Enjoy personal attention from your guide on this small-group tour, limited to eight people.

After choosing the start time to suit your schedule, meet your guide and hop aboard your air-conditioned minivan at your hotel in Avignon then head out of the city to begin your Van Gogh in Provence day trip. Considered by many to be among the finest painters of his generation, Van Gogh spent a number of years in Provence and it was here that he produced popular works such as Cypresses, Irises and The Starry Night.

Stop first among the olive groves and cypress trees at Les Antiques in St-Rémy de Provence, a beautiful landscape of Roman ruins painted on many occasions by Van Gogh. Admire highlights such as the triumphal arch and the funeral monument with your guide, and learn how they inspired the master during his time in the south of France. Visit the Saint-Paul Asylum (own expense), where Van Gogh painted his ‘Wheat Field’ series from May 1889 to May 1890.

Continue on to Les Baux de Provence, an ancient village nestled on a limestone outcrop high in the rolling Provençal hills. Explore the cobbled streets of its historic center and take in top attractions such as the Museum of Santons, the Hôtel des Porcelets (a beautiful 16th-century house) and the Romanesque St Vincent Church.

From April, 2017, you will enjoy the audiovisual show in the Carrieres de Lumieres (Quarry of Light): reproductions of famous paintings are displayed on the walls of the quarry while music is on. The show is closed in January and February, more time will be allowed in the village of Les Baux during this period.

Next, walk in Van Gogh’s footsteps during a tour of Arles — a UNESCO World Heritage site. Learn about its rich Roman history at the ancient amphitheatre, and discover the sites which inspired this talented artist to produce famous works such as The Yellow House and The Night Café. Afterward, enjoy a little free time to explore Arles at your leisure.

When your time in Arles comes to an end, hop back aboard your minivan for the return journey to your hotel in Avignon, where your Provence day trip will come to an end.

We saw many places Van Gogh was, in and around Arles, briefly stopping by the hospital outside St Remedy. I enjoyed the tour and thape scenery of southern France. To learn more, go to the Van Gogh museum in Arles.

I've always loved Van Gogh, I think since reading a biography about him in the 90's and going to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. But after this tour, and seeing the places he lived in Provence and at times standing seemingly on the spots he stood while painting, I have a different level of respect for the man as a painter and a person. THIS is what I have to say about this tour. Need I say more?

This was not quite the tour we were expecting. My granddaughter was very disappointed that we did not get to see Van Gogh's hospital room which was included in the description of the tour. We would have liked to have gone to the bridge near Arles where one or some of the earliest Starry Night paintings were painted. Instead of focusing on Van Gogh the tour included some Roman ruins which were interesting but had nothing to do with Van Gogh.

Příjemný výlet s velmi dobře připravenou průvodkyní, měli jsme dost prostoru na samostatné prohlídky na všech místech, kterými jsme projížděli

Good day trip! Pleasant guide and nice way to see other cities of the Provence area, while learning a little about Van Gogh's time there.

Our Tour Guide, Adeline, please excuse the spelling was very good and informative. Her driving was smooth and steady so no one ended up sick. The tour section of Arles is something I would have liked longer, but that is easily said when I know nothing of the city. We loved Les Baux and the chance to wander. This is such a beautiful town. The crown of the tour was the hospital where Van Gogh stayed. I expected something almost morbid, but it was quite the opposite. I would not liked to have been a customer of the hospital, but the colours and scenery were fabulous. Being able to be where Vincent himself was just blew me away. This was a very enjoyable tour.

Was disappointed that the company did not have other people interested in this tour. They kindly transferred my booking to the Luberon and Lavender Museum tour. The hilltop towns of Gordes and Roussillon were beautiful and worth the visit.

Slightly bummed. I really loved the tour but the guide made a slight modification. I suppose he had good intentions but I didn't really feel as though he focused on Van Gogh. He changed the details around us to have us experience a festival that was taking place. We all did agree to this but we were not told we wouldn't have the opportunity to tour the Asylum which was my plan!. The Asylum is on the agenda with the option to tour it at our own expense. As it turned out, the festival included running of the bulls. No one wanted to see that and our guide seemed so confused by it. We all happened to be animal lovers and were against bull running!! Because of this we only had 15 minutes to view the asylum and a couple of monuments. The Asylum tour is 45 minutes so I had to skip it. We also never stopped in the cute town of St. Remy but only drove through it. We spent an hour at Les Beaux. Though cool I would rather have spent the time touring Van Gogh's asylum! Nice, polite tour guide though with best of intentions. This means I will have to go back. This time, on my own, no tour.

The itinary was very good and our guide Victorine was very knowledgeable, competent and gracious. However one couple overslept and made our guide wait for them, putting us at least 30 minutes off schedule. Victorine was pleasant about it , but it made a difference for her snd for the rest of us.

We found the town of Arles to be especially interesting because of its Roman ruins as well as the spots frequented by Van Gogh. Our guide Nicolas pointed out many highlights and was full of information. We enjoyed the colorful bright yellow cafe which was the subject of Van Gogh's painting, and also the lovely courtyard of flowers at the place he stayed to restore his health. Town square has noteworthy church and fountain.

We had 2 female tour guides (one was in training) that were very knowledgeable and informative. Beautiful historic tour through Arles first. Probably could have spent a whole day just wandering the streets there, but timing was certainly adequate. Didn't go in to the coliseum because there was a charge but got to see the outside of the bull-fighting arena. Beautiful drive up the mountain. Really enjoyed the little village up on the hill (Les Baux de Provence). If there were a bunch of people on the tour it seems as though it could easily run all day, but there were only 3 of us so it was fantastic.

Great trip, only complaint not enough time spent at the last mental hospital, where there were a lot of scenes that he painted .

The trip takes you to Arles where you can see a Roman amphitheater, van Gogh's cafe, Picasso's hotel, and the hospital to which van Gogh repaired after cutting his ear. There is a good side-trip to van Gogh's psychiatric hospital and nearby Roman ruins. I was intrigued by the 2nd century BC village near the ruins, but this was not included on the tour. Worth the trip, but would have appreciated a little more time in Arles...seemed a bit rushed. Also, don't expect anything but the most superficial coverage of van Gogh himself--which was appropriate since some of the Asian people on the tour had never heard of him. I'd recommend that Viator add a tour to the unseen village, and perhaps a tour dedicated to the life of van Gogh.

Our guide was absolutely wonderful and the small bus had large windows so we could see very well. We would have liked more than 1 hour at the farmers market but all in all, it was a wonderful trip. The countryside is so beautiful.

I was a little disappointed in the trip as I thought that it was supposed to be in the footsteps of Van Gogh. The tour was more centred around the history of Arles and the Romans. although we did visit a couple of the artist's sites that he had painted including St-Paul-de-Mausole although no time to go into the hospital and see the room, and Les Antiques Saint Remy I expected to see other sites of interest especially Langlois Bridge, near Arles instead of wasting time in Arles walking around Roman Ruins.

The tour was too short to really appreciate the places where Van Gogh "hanged out" but it provided a good overview of the man and the places that inspired his art.

The trip was quite informative. The tour guide was very well-versed in the history of the area and made the visits quite informative. I enjoyed the small group (a couple, the tour guide, and myself) and it was done in a way that didn't make it seem rushed. The entire tour was quite well done and I would, and have, strongly recommended to others going to the area to take it.
