Bangkok Half-Day National Museum Tour
Bangkok, Thailand
Learn about Thai art, culture, and history during this guided half-day visit to the National Museum in Bangkok. Browse a vast array of artifacts showcasing the history of Thailand, and view one of the best collections of Southeast Asian art in the world.
Discover the vivid history of Thailand during this guided half-day tour of the National Museum in Bangkok. Bangkok's National Museum houses a vast collection of artifacts from all regions of Thailand, ranging from neolithic times to the modern Thai Kingdom.
Opened by King Rama V in 1874 to exhibit the antiques and gifts bestowed to him by his father. Popular items in the museum include Chinese weapons, gold treasures, precious stones, Khon masks, puppets, ceramics, clothing and textiles, woodcarving, and traditional musical instruments from throughout Southeast Asia. The museum also houses a collection of royal funerary carriages, including the massive and still-used Vajayant Rajarot that requires 300 men to pull.
In the company of your expert guide, you'll learn about the full range of Thai culture and history, as well as the traditional significance of Buddhism to the Thai way of life. Murals and sculpture provide the backdrop to learn about the Buddhist, Hindu, Vedic, and Animist traditions that combine to form Thai Buddhism, while textiles reveal the history of Thai royal diplomacy, ancient court life, and the evolution of Thai arts. Additionally, many of the significant remains of the former capitals Sukhothai and Ayutthaya are on display.
This is a very nice 1/2 day tour where we were picked up and dropped off at our hotel. The guide was quite informative. It was interesting to see the many artifacts and relics at the museum. The museum is partially housed in several Royal houses so you can also see the interior of the houses. The lighting in the main reception hall is very dramatic. The museum is under renovation so not all exhibits are open to the public. This was our first day in the city so the tour was just the right length for our group of jet lagged visitors.

This was the one tour that I had doubts about selecting, but it turned out to be exceptional. Not only was the guide fantastic, the museum itself was absolutely fascinating. Moreover, it was the one part of the palace complex that was not overrun with Chinese tourists armed with selfie sticks and umbrellas.
