Bangkok Walking Tour: Chao Phraya Riverside Paths of Thonburi

Bangkok, Thailand

Explore the Chao Phraya riverside of Thonburi on a 3.5-hour guided walking tour. Ride a boat to the Tha Din Daeng district of Bangkok and sample local food; explore back streets and riverside paths on foot; and pass by Thai temples, Chinese shrines, churches and mosques as you gain insight into the area’s diverse local cultures. Expect to see Princess Mother Memorial Park and Wat Kalayanamit along the way! Numbers are limited to 10 people, ensuring a personalized experience with a small group.

This walking tour visits a stretch of the riverbank on the Thonburi side where many original communities remain and passes by Thai temples, Chinese shrines, churches and mosques. Yet, this is not a tour about religion, but rather one where we explore the diverse local cultures and the stories of how these groups arrived in the area.

The tour starts by taking the ferry across to the Thonburi side of the river and a visit to the famous Wat Kalayanamit. From here we will walk along a combination of riverside paths and backstreets, passing through a diverse range of local neighborhoods. This includes the Portuguese Catholic community, known as Kudeejeen, which is famous for its local cake.

You will also visit the Princess Mother's Memorial Park and the neighboring Chinese shrine and mosque. Along the way you will see signs of the past and the industry that used to be part of the area. We finish the tour at Tha Din Daeng which is a foodies paradise, and after the tour you can grab some lunch here or head across the river to Chinatown.

This walk is about 3.5km and suitable for anyone with moderate fitness.

Our guide really made this tour for us. We had over 3 hours walking through such an interesting area of Bangkok, with a variety of different cultural influences.

This walking tour was a wonderful way to see the back streets of Bangkok. Our guide "Esso" was quite easy to listen to and knew what he was talking about, offering snippets of local information and tastes of street food. If you want to get away from the tourist areas this is well worth considering.

Walked thru lots of back allyways; visited a few interesting candy and snack shops after taking a boat across the river. Interesting stop at a coffeeshop/bakery -good drink and snacks. Thought we'd see more of life along the river when we actually spent more time a few blocks back from the river in allyways; so very little in terms of interesting views. I visited Bangkok several times so it was interesting to see a side of the city I haven't seen, but wouldn't recommend if you're a new visitor; many more interesting things to see and do.

Throughly enjoyed this tour,we were met by our tour guide Jib and the owner of expique at the meeting spot. Jib was a wealth of information on the history of these areas where the Chinese,Muslims,Porteguese and Catholics live together harmoniously. Walked many back lanes to see how the people of these areas live, came across many friendly locals happy to say hello and saw inside many homes where they were cheering and having a great time watching Muay Thai fights. This is the real bangkok that many tourists do not get to see. As we went on a Sunday not all the things we were to experience were open but Iam sure if you went on a weekday you would not have a problem. The local street food we tried consisted of various sweet treats which were yummy but more variety of foods would of been better. Would highly recommend this tour for anyone, easy pace walking and Jib our guide was great.
