Foodie Experience of Historic Bangrak

Bangkok, Thailand

Enjoy Bangkok's off-the-beaten experience and explore the century-old Bang Rak neighborhood for its culinary and cultural secrets. Awarded Best Tour Program in 2013 by Tourism Authority of Thailand, this food walk allows you to become a Thai food expert in 3.5 hours. Stroll down the streets and enjoy tasting various regional and ethical Thai cuisines at 5 local eateries that have been in business for generations. This is a small group tour fulfilled with fun experience for all ages.

Meet with our culinary-trained, fully licensed tour guide at BTS Saphan Taksin station in the morning. Walk your way through the old streets of Bang Rak "the Village of Love" and experience Bangkok's mom and pop food culture and local unseen attractions. Bangrak is the district famous among Thais for its diverse local flavors. The area is a true melting pot, where you can find Thai delicacies from various regions and ethnicity. This walking tour will stop at 5 local restaurants, where you will sample more than 12 items of food and drinks and have a chance to meet and engage with restaurant owners. On this tour, not only you will get full exposure to the Thai gastronomic tradition but your visit will also be a great support to the local community.

From BTS station, our first stop will be a half century old Thai-Chinese eatery serving some of the best Thai-style roast duck. Then, walk along the back streets to visit its hidden gem, Wat Suan Plu temple, and learn about its significance to the community. Continue your food journey and visit one of the oldest eateries in the area, a Thai-Muslim restaurant offering very unique Thai-Halal dishes. Then, it is time to cross the majestic Chao Phraya river to get to the other side of Bangkok as you will visit a hole-in-the-wall eatery serving Northeastern Thai cuisines. You will not be considered completing your visit without tasting something from the "ISAN menu" including the spicy green papaya salad and Thai-style fried chicken with herbs.

As the tour guide brings you back to Bang Rak area, you will visit another local institution famous for snacks and sweets. There, you will taste the original pandan flavor custard bun served with the delicious Thai ice tea. Our last tasting location features Royal Thai cuisine serving from a restaurant run by a Thai Royal decedent. You will taste the Royal-recipe green curry served with Thai style roti. Finish your tasting with the refreshing Thai-style ice cream before the tour guide walks you to our ending point at Surasak BTS Station. After the tour, you will be confident to continue your journey in Thailand and eat like a local.

The varied food experiences on this tour were really good, the guide even bought us some fresh durian fruit which is for Thai standards quite expensive, so it was really nice to try a little bit of it without having to buy a big chunk. It is a very smelly fruit, but very popular in Thai, so a must try! The only disappointment is that the guide forgot that it was a holiday so one of the restaurants was closed. It was the first day of Buddhist Lent. For vegans, be aware that even though it says there are vegan options, those options are not very good.

This was an amazing food tour of Bangkok well worth it, Pang our tour guide was great so friendly and informative. Not only did we learn about the food but she incorporated the history of the temples and we even got on a ferry ride to go across the other side of the water to eat at an amazing restaurant which you wouldn't even known existed. There were 5 restaurants we ate at all amazing and different, such a great tour and great guide! Thanks Pang we will be back for sure!

The young lady leading the tour was very knowledgeable but the tour itself was boring and the foods tasted had been pre cooked and left at room temp to cool, this is ok to a degree but some of the food had been reheated to luke warm and I would not eat due concerns regarding food poisoning.

This was an ok tour, but the tour guide, Tiny, was so quiet and hard to understand, I think me and my friend maybe understood about 20 of the descriptions/information she was providing. Another tour group member made the same comment. Additionally, the food and the restaurants that were chosen were not the best, and it made me wonder what criteria was used in the selection process. bathrooms at one of the restaurants didn't even have running water and no sinks, so unclear how conditions were kept sanitary enough for preparing food.

It is difficult to translate taste, emotion, and feeling into words however, I will try my best to say that this is one of the best tours that you can take in Bangkok. The tour started promptly and was lead by a local woman named Lucy. She was extremely articulate and friendly and from the first moment until the last moment, she was at our sides explaining local history and local food flavors.

Great fun with Nussi. Lots and lots of food - and it kept coming - didn't need to eat the rest of the day! Nussi also answered other cultural questions that we had. Highly recommend.
