In order to disguise and protect it from plunderers, the figure was covered in plaster for two centuries until it was restored.

Continue on to Wat Pho, a large temple that dates back to the 17th century. See more than 1,000 images in addition to the 150-foot-long (46-meter) Reclining Buddha, covered in gold leaf to represent the entrance of Buddha into Nirvana. 

Finally, proceed to Wat Benchamabophit, known for its fusion of Thai and European architectural styles. Learn about its marble Buddha and the temple's pillars and walls made of white Cararra marble imported from Italy.
