Mahachai Train Tour from Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand

Travel from Bangkok to the famous Mahachai and Mae Klong seafood markets on the Gulf of Thailand during this full-day journey by train. Take two distinct train lines that connect Bangkok to the coastal provinces of Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram — a route that was originally built to transport fresh seafood to the city. Marvel at seafood vendors who conduct business on the train tracks, and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch. A knowledgeable guide shares the history and traditions of the region with your small group, limited to eight people.

Meet your guide in the morning in central Bangkok, and take the BTS Sky Train to Wong Wian Yai station, located on the outskirts of the city. From there, walk through quiet neighborhoods to the station where you board the train for Mahachai. If time allows, your guide picks up coffee and snacks from local food stalls to share with you during the ride.

As your train rolls out of the city, watch the tall buildings of Bangkok fade away while rice fields and houses perched on stilts come into view. After a 1-hour journey, arrive in Mahachai, where you'll disembark in the middle of the market that spreads out within arm's reach of the train tracks. It's one of Thailand’s biggest traditional fresh seafood markets.

Follow your guide through small alleys lined with food vendors and into a popular restaurant where you'll feast on fresh seafood for lunch. Then cross the Tha Chin River and jump on the train to Mae Klong, traveling through a landscape sprinkled with salt pines and rice paddies.

As the train arrives in Mae Klong, it passes through the Rom Hub (Umbrella) market, which sits on the train tracks. Vendors pull their awnings and display tables back just as the train rumbles into the station. The vendors know exactly how high they can stack their goods next to the track so that the edge of the train passes over without touching them. As soon as the train departs, they display their goods on the tracks again.

Walk through the Mae Klong market with your guide before traveling back to Bangkok by minivan and boat. On the weekends, you'll also stop at the Amphawa floating market, known for delicious foods that are cooked up and served directly from small boats along the river.

You are returned to Sapan Taksin BTS Sky Train Station, where you can make your own way back to your hotel or next destination.

We were not told of the extensive walking involved and it was hard on me. Two train rides were not comfortable, but it was a local train. Visit to floating market was a joke--only two boats. seafood lunch was good, as was the guide.

Lots of walking. Learn a lot about Thai food and markets. Nice scenery on train. Restaurant big let down. Not large variety to choose from and would expect more seafood dishes as this is the fish market.

It was a great tour. Got to experience the local culture. The Umbrella Market, that was an incredible highlight to see the locals move out of the way for the train only to go right back to work as soon as it passed. That's just one of the highlights. We spent all day using every possible form of transportation trains, boats, tuk-tuks, etc. to get to our different points of interest. We explored vegetable and fish markets, street food carts. Buddhist temples, and flower markets. Incredible value for your money. It's a long day. Bring comfy shoes and an open mind.

This was probably the best day trip I have been on in years, and the value for money incredible. We did not spend any money all day, all was provided. We were a little anxious when we arrived at the New Road Guest House, for our tour. It is a backpackers venue and we felt uncomfortable, however once our tour guide arrived, and out tour started, she put us at ease, and we were confident it was going to be a good day. I wont describe the itinerary as that is explained. It was a very full day, starting around 08:00 and finishing at 18:00, utilising various forms of public transport. The tour was provided by Go Beyond. Truly excellent.

Not your typical tour of Bangkok but I enjoyed the trains, the food markets and the lunch overlooking the river

Guide was very knowledgable and very helpful. However, aviator should update its promo -- only one train. Very disappointed in the final phrase of your. Would not recommend for mature adults.

This was a grand trip. Our guide Tae was friendly and helpful. There were several times we had difficulty understanding her, but for the most part all was well. The stop in Mahachai was most interesting as we were able to see the vendors along the tracks move thing our of the way of the train. We also went to Mae Klong to see the market along the tracks there unfortunately, there are no trains currently running through that market as they are redoing the station. However, we walked along the tracks to see the stalls and the tables with wheels. Great day out!

Do not waste your time or money. Uninteresting, non-informative, nothing to see of any real interest. Spend your time more wisely.
