Small-Group Chinatown Walking Tour Including Sampeng Market

Bangkok, Thailand

Visit lesser-known spots in Bangkok’s Chinatown on a 3.5-hour walking tour that takes you into the chaotic jumble of shops, temples, shrines and food vendors found around Sampeng Market. With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, visit a Chinese temple, sample an array of tasty snacks and drinks, and have the chance to do a bit of shopping. Wrap up by eating a delicious lunch of typical dishes at a popular local restaurant. This small-group tour limited to eight people provides a more personalized experience.

Meet your guide and small group at Saphan Taksin BTS Station, and hop aboard the local ferry for the ride to nearby Ratchawong Pier, Bangkok's riverside gateway to Chinatown. As you delve into Chinatown's busy streets to make your way to Sampeng Market, your guide provides a brief introduction to the neighborhood, which dates back more than 200 years and remains a vibrant part of the modern city.

Enter the sprawling market, where you’ll see all sorts of items for sale, from hair accessories, stickers and school supplies to clothing, household wares and electronic knickknacks. Jewelry, gem and gold shops fill an entire area. Many store owners in Bangkok visit Sampeng Market regularly to purchase goods for their own shops.

As you walk around, your guide points out notable old shophouses, spice markets, tea shops, Chinese temples and shrines, and popular eateries. Learn about Chinese spiritual practices, and stop to sample herbal drinks and favorite snacks prepared by street vendors. After a couple of hours taking in the sights and history of Sampeng Market and Chinatown, enjoy a typical Thai-Chinese lunch at a local restaurant. Food is included, and juice or alcoholic drinks are available to purchase at your own expense.

Expect to walk a total of about 1.5 miles (3 km) at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops for photo ops and to browse the market. If you want to shop, your guide can assist you in the art of bargaining like a local. Your tour ends in Chinatown, where you can make your own way to your next destination.

Our guide seemed to know the Chinatown area and she spoke English well. That said, I would have liked some more insightful commentary on the major temples we visited.

Very interesting tour. I was the only one on the tour and had two tour guides. I got to see parts of Chinatown that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.
