Weird and Wacky Bangkok Tour by Riverboat

Bangkok, Thailand

Go beyond the temples and shopping malls of Bangkok to experience the more bizarre sights hidden within Thailand’s capital city during this 6-hour tour. With a knowledgeable guide, travel through the bustling metropolis by riverboat, tuk-tuk and Skytrain to visit museums with graphic medical exhibits, a fertility shrine home to phallic statues and vibrant markets full of interesting goods. Mixed in between Bangkok's longstanding traditions and modern cityscape, creepy treasures are waiting to be discovered on this small-group tour, limited to eight people.

After meeting your guide, head to the pier on the Chao Phraya River to catch the ferry, your first of a few boat rides on this tour. During the ride, observe the contrasts of Bangkok as you pass contemporary high-rise buildings that loom over modest shacks along the riverbank.

Disembark from the ferry in the middle of a bustling local market, and follow your guide through the crowd, taking in colorful stalls and street kitchens where an array of tantalizing dishes bubble on open stoves. Just past the market, prepare for a visit to a medical museum that features graphic displays of embalmed body parts, accident photographs and exhibits about forensics, parasites, cancer and the tsunami. Your guide provides explanation of the displays, which have only limited signage in English.

Leaving the museum, cross the river by boat and jump in a tuk-tuk to reach your next destination, a hidden canal that is part of a network of water passages throughout the city. Hop aboard a riverboat that runs up the canal, allowing you to glimpse local life on the banks of these ancient waterways.

Get off the boat in an upscale district of grand hotels, homes and shopping malls, where you'll enjoy lunch at a neighborhood restaurant before visiting a small, yet significant, shrine that honors a female fertility spirit with hundreds of colorful phallus statues left as offerings.
Continue your tour with a ride on the Skytrain to a centrally located mall where a tucked-away museum features a clinical exhibition of dissected humans, with layers of skin peeled back to show the effects of disease on various biological systems. Then get back on the Skytrain and listen as your guide points out the haunting Ghost Tower, an unfinished 49-story building that hovers over Bangkok’s business district. After about 6 hours of enjoying bizarre Bangkok, you will return to the starting point to complete to tour.

Please note: Some of the things you see on this tour may be too disturbing and/or scary for some people, especially children.

Very cool tour! The museums were really interesting, something you don't really find in many other cities. The most interesting parts was seeing various body parts with diseases or wounds, and also feeling the weight of a human brain. And we learned about the history of Thailand's dentistry and the king's role in that.

Neat little tour. The tour guide was fun and knowledgeable. Saw some pretty interesting stuff. For anyone with a medical background or even just an interest in how the body works and medical anomalies this is a cool tour.

This is another great tour that gets you out of air con'd vans and out amongst all the excitement of Bangkok whilst also providing an incredibly interesting and educational, if sometimes sombre and gruesome, insight into the human body, the things that can ail it, and what can and does happen when things go awry. Certainly not for the faint of heart, this tour uses mixed modes of local travel foot, ferry, tuk-tuk, klong boat and BTS Skytrain to see you to the major destinations the Siriraj Medical and Anatomical Museums at one end of town and the Chulalongkorn University Museum of Human Body at another, with stops for lunch and a visit to a curious little fertility shrine along the way. Our guide was very knowledgeable, interesting and personable and certainly added value overall to the already incredible experience. Especially recommended if you've always wanted to hang out with the mummified corpse of a cannibalistic child murderer, or inspect close hand the damage a shotgun blast to the heart can inflict. Amazing indeed!

The lady who lead the tour was lovely, but myself and my partner understood very little of what she was saying, effecting our ability to enjoy the experience quite dramatically. We ended up being non the wiser from the tour experience, and would have been no worse off without the tour guide at all.

This was really a unique tour. We saw places we never would have seen on our own. We took many modes of transportation which was fun. The only drawback was that the meeting place was hard to find.

There were three of us on the tour, including two KLM male flight attendants, which was very helpful as the canal boats that we took were hard to get into and out of. We also took a river boat on the Chao Phraya and a tuk tuk. The main part of the tour was visiting museums with human specimens. It was an interesting tour but it is one to take after you have been to Bangkok beforehand.

This tour is amazing, but not for the faint hearted! This was something that interested both my husband and I. Not only do you get to see the medical and forensic museum, you are also able to experience the public transport tuk tuk, canal boat and river boat as well as some tasty local food. We thoroughly enjoyed our day, and our tour guide, Win I hope I have your name right was exceptionally knowledgeable! Thank you so very much!
