Costa Brava Day Trip from Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

On this tour we are going to visit the Girona coast, christened 100 years ago as the Costa Brava. The name is due to its unique rocky, rugged and cut shape coastline, composed of small coves surrounded by pine forests and lapped by crystal water. Its natural wealth and beauty is apparent in several territories and protected areas, such us Cap de Creus, the Emporda Marshes and the Marine Reserve Medes islands.

The fame of Costa Brava is also due to its villages. Small fisherman towns, with whitewashed walls and narrow winding streets, today still retain their charm. This area has historically been a point of entry, transit, and settlement for different cultures and civilizations. Each has left its footprints, which is evidenced by the Greek and Roman sites in Empuries. The Costa Brava is not to be missed!

We will take the motorway and about 10:15am we are going to arrive in Calella de Palafrugell, a small fisherman’s village that still retains today the traditional appearance of the past. It is a village of great beauty in both architecture and landscape. The town, splashed with small bays, becomes a fusion of land and sea that is an incomparable setting.

About 11:15am, we will start walking along Camino de Ronda, which is going to lead us to the neighborhood town of Llafranc. The “Camino de Ronda” borders all the Costa Brava and was used to control the maritime smuggling. Today, thanks to this, you can discover beautiful spots that wouldn’t be otherwise accessible.

About 12:00 we will travel to Pals, a town located inland and on the top of a hill. The village is built entirely in an integrated medieval site. At the top there is a cylindrical tower from the XII century, which is visible from far away. It has an excellent terrace that offers stunning views of the Costa Brava and surroundings.

Our next visit is to l’Estartit, seaside village with an important port famous worldwide as being an important diving center because the Medes Islands archipelago lies only one kilometer from the coast. Medes islands are of great interest for the wide variety of flora and fauna that inhabit in the whole marine area, with more than 1200 species classified. The ecosystem has been identified as the best marine reserve in the occidental Mediterranean.

You will have free time to have lunch and take a small stroll around town and at 15:00pm we will get on board Nautilus, a boat with submarine vision.

The sailing is about 1h30. First we will go ahead to the outer islands. The views are spectacular, but also, through submerged cabins with large windows, you can enjoy an exceptional view of a sea floor full of life, as if you were diving!

Our last stop is at the extensive Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries, in which we are going to arrive around 17:00pm. Once there, we will start a guided tour around the whole site. It is the only site in Spain where both Greek and later a Roman city existed together. Empuries is also located in a privileged surrounding, just in front of the sea.

At 18:00 the tour is finished and we go back to Barcelona, where about 20.00 we will arrive at Plaza Catalunya.

Villages are spectacular. I specially like the walk to Llafranc and the medieval village of Pals. It was a very long but so interesting day. Last stop at Greek and Roman sites in Empuries was so interresting. Complete day wort it.

It is a long and good tour, walking along the coastal Barcelona, historical sites and cruises. Morning the weather is a bit cloudy. Luckily in the afternoon weather change to sunny. A lovely cruise and finally the Greek historical sites as the ending.

It was really nice to get away from the busy city of Barcelona. The bus was very comfortable and the tour guides were amazing. I felt like this tour was a bit too long and if I had to do over I would have purchased the half day. There was not a lot of time on our own which would have been nicer and we expected to see more on the boat ride we didn't see many fish. Also there is a lot of walking on unstable ground in some areas. Be sure to wear a good pair of walking shoes. There are some hills to climb and lots of areas with stairs.

Beatiful walk along a gorgeous coast. A lot of activities into one day. Would have preferred to have more time walking from town to town. Tour guide Elena was well informed and gave lots of good information. The tour guides spoke to us as if we were in grade school and sometimes rushed us ,which didn't really take away from the grand day but something that the guides should be aware of.

The Costa Brava day trip was a great day trip. It was nice to get out of Barcelona and see the coast. We traveled in a comfortable bus to several places. We had some time at each place to explore on our own. Our guide was very good. We walked a small portion of the Camino Ronda, which is an easy coastal hike that takes you along coastal villages and fishing towns. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed a boat trip around some rocky islands. They let us go down to observe the fish not much to see. Also stopped at a medieval town along the way. Very fun day!

This is a great tour. It is a long day with so many places to see and visit. The boat excursion is very peaceful and relaxing. You end the day with the tour of a Greek and Roman ruins. We are taking another tour with Barcelona Holiday this coming June 2017.

We decided to take this tour our last day in Barcelona and it was the best one. The spots we visited were amazing but the walk between the first villages and the boat trip were our favorites. We highly recommend this tour.

Barcelona is such a wonderful city but after a few days it was truly refreshing to escape the city noise and visit the Costa Brava region. We fell in love and would love to plan another vacation with lots of time in this region. This tour covered a lot of territory and is great if you want to see lots of sights. We thoroughly enjoyed the boat ride and underwater viewing and just wish we could have stayed on the beach longer. Seeing the ruins wasn't that important to us since we just returned from Athens and Pompeii but it was interesting. It was obvious our tour guide Tony was working very hard to keep his English understandable and I appreciated his attitude and kind nature.

I did both the full day tour this tour and the half-day Costa Brava tour with this company. I thoroughly enjoyed them both! This tour is the longer 12 hour tour that visits smaller villages. They were all stunning and were highly varied from beach villages to a medieval walled town. They even gave us plenty of time to enjoy a fantastic seafood sit down meal in the restaurant of our choosing. Highly recommended tour.

All the different sites were fantastic, but a tremendous amount of walking, some quite steep, but still worth it. Really enjoyed it but finished exhausted but very satisfied.

Our guide was outstanding. He was patient and very knowledgeable. A very nice person and good guide._br/_ The only draw back from me was all the walking. I have a back condition and I could not join in all the walking. Perhaps you need ratings on your tours as to how much walking is involved so people understand if they can do the tour or not.

The tour guide was fantastic - very knowledgeable and friendly. I personally would have preferred more time at Pals and at the Ruins site. I thought it was a waste of time to have 20 minutes of free time at two little beach towns - it wasn't really enough time to do anything and it wasn't time to have a meal and there was no shopping available that was any good. There were alot of artisan shops at Pals that we couldn't even stop for :. Thanks!

On a day of glorious sunshine this trip was very good. The villages and the walk between them was the highlight. The cruise was the low light and I would not recommend that part. Amazing archeological visit at the end.

It was a fantastic day with a great group of people and a super guide. It should be noted that in the case of some people, it may be a little difficult to climb some of the streets which are quite steep. We went to several villages of the Costa Brava and ate a marvellous meal in one of its fabulous restaurants. I recommend highly Les Salines if you like to eat fish. I also highly recommend this whole-day excursion.

Monica our tour guide was excellent and very informative, we had the best day, the cruise was like a separate little tour, the views were amazing, lots of strenous walking but well worth doing.

The guide was excellent! Everything was beautiful. The scenery was spectacular!! There was a nice mix of bus, walk, and boat ride. We also had free time, which was appreciated. This was my favorite trip in all of Spain.

Excellent tour and guide Monica. Only one complaint suggest the short walk not suitable for anyone who is not fit and healthy as there are lots of steep steps and hills to contend with.

The tour was really good but we could have done without the boat ride. It just made a long enough day even longer.

Fabulous day trip. We went to five sites in one day. Had such a nice professional tour guide, Monica. Actually two tour guides on the trip. Nice bus operator. Everything was spectacular. For the money, it cannot be beat.

The tour locations were excellent. The bus was excellent. The tour guide did well. The major complaint we have is that there was not enough time to spend at the medieval site and ruins. The boat with 'sub aquatic vision' was not worth spending the time. There is not much marine life to see. The time would have been better spent at the last stop.

What a day! So much variety in the trip. We experienced so much. The only negative was the glass bottom boat - very little to see underwater and very cramped - the boat had no running water and therefore there are definite hygiene problems when it came to the toilet facilities - it was the major let down of the day. Everything else was spectacular and enjoyed by all.
