Experience Gaudi: Create Your Own Trencadis-Style Mosaic

Channel the legendary artist and architect Antoni Gaudí during this fun, family-friendly mosiac workshop. Over the course of 2 hours, learn the Art Nouveau mosiac technique "trencadis," which he invented and can be found all over Barcelona's main monuments like La Pedrera, Casa Batllo, Parque Guell, and La Sagrada Familia. Using shards of glass or ceramic and grouting them, create a uniqely abstract masterpiece of your own like a coaster, a mirror, or a photo frame.

Select from one of three start times when booking, then get ready to harness your inner artist. During this fun, family-friendly workshop at a Barcelona art studio, learn the "trencadís" — a mosaic technique pioneered by the famed artist and architect Antoni Gaudí. Some examples of works created using this technique can be found in Barcelona's Park Güell, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, and La Sagrada Família.

Learn how to use each tool, choose your design, select your colors, and then craft your personal masterpiece made with irregular pieces of pottery, marble, and/or glass to create a photo frame, a mirror, an elephant, or a table mat. Please note that your artwork will take time to dry before you apply the final grouting. If you do a morning workshop you can pick up your mosaic in the afternoon of the same day. If your workshop takes place in the afternoon, you may pick it up the next morning.

Our 14 and 10 year old sons were absolutely engaged in this activity, and we all enjoyed making our mosaics with the friendly help of the owner and her assistant. We may have benefited from a bit more historical information on the style of mosaic, and a bit more direction as we began on exactly what to do in terms of practical instruction. Travellers should know that the mosaics require finishing, so you do have to come back for them the following day, which required some logistics for us as we hadn't planned to return to that section of the city. But overall, I would recommend this to any family traveling to Barcelona as our children better appreciated the artistry of the mosaics that they saw throughout the city. Our thanks to Mosaiccos!

This was a wonderful experience to make something useful in mosaic tile to take home as a remembrance of your trip to Barcelona. Maria Jose, Anna and Angela were great to work with. Highly recommend this activity during your stay.
