Girona and Costa Brava Small Group Day Trip from Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

On this day trip from Barcelona, you will visit the city of Girona in the north east of Catalonia before continuing to the Coastal region of Costa Brava. On this small group tour, you'll receive personalized attention from your guide.

Leaving Barcelona, you will head to Girona, a city with a long history, believed to be founded around 76 BC. The river Onyar neatly divides the city in two, separating the old town from the new. The city has a rich architectural heritage and you can see evidence of this in its the cathedral founded in 1038 an the Roman walls which you can stroll along when they are open or wander the narrow streets of the old town.

Continue to the Santuari dels Angels, this spot offers panoramic views of the whole Girona region and is the spot Salvador Dali chose for his wedding. From here you will make your way to Pals, a small city that grew from a fortress. Stop here for lunch before you head to the fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell.

The clean lines of the whitewashed houses here will be evident here and you'll have time to explore the rocky coastline or perhaps even take a dip in the inviting waters before returning to Barcelona.

This was an awesome tour and Anna was great! Enjoyed seeing these very old towns, walking the cobblestone streets. It might be better in September or October as far as the weather goes. Was still a fun and informative trip.

I wish I could give this tour 6 stars! Our Guide I forgot his name.. Ari.. Adin? A gentleman who is a trained historian Did an exceptional job in being our tour guide. As it was 'off season' there was only 7 of us and our guide in a van instead of the usual bus. To be honest it was the best ...the weather was comfortable and the locations were not packed out._br/_ All the sites were accessible and we were given lots of information about the specific sites as well as general information continuously throughout the day- about the geography, buildings and Catalina lifestyle. Costa Brava was quiet and cute. Bring your camera and enjoy the experience. A great day out and you feel like you really had the opportunity to be educated on the history and events that shaped these sites. Once again super impressed and our guide was incredible and fantastic at his job. Thank you!

Three great sightseeing locations in one day, all were really beautiful. Enough time in each place including some guided trip time and some free time. Our guide was really knowledgeable. Highly recommend as a nice day trip from Barcelona.

What a great day out. A full day away from Barcelona. A very informative guide, lovely scenery on the way and then we enjoyed a lovely fish lunch overlooking the ocean watching the boats go by. It was a great day.

Our guide, Veronica, led us on an enjoyable day trip to the atmospheric medieval towns of Girona of Games of Thrones and Pals. Veronica was interesting and informative and her enthusiastic story telling and friendly style kept our attention. We then travelled to the scenic seaside town of Calella de Palafrugell where we had lots of free time to have lunch and go swimming. This was our second trip with Explore Catalunya and we have enjoyed both of them. Once the group is off the bus, their objective is to strike an even balance between independent free time and a guided group walk. This mix works well.

This was a wonderful getaway from the big city of Barcelona. The amazingly entertaining and considerate guide, Gloria, made it even more interesting with her commentary and sense of humor. We had a generous amount of time to stroll the fascinating ancient streets of Girona with several highlighted historic sights to choose from. Not far away, we had time to explore Pals, a medieval village, quiet and picture perfect. No other tour buses in sight! Then on to the gorgeous coastal resort of Callel de Pallafrugel where we had a choice of several tempting seafood restaurants on the water and a choice of paths along the rugged and picturesque coastline. Even some rain couldn't spoil a perfect day trip. Bravos to Gloria and driver Raffa!

We really enjoyed the trip to Girona and Costa Brava despite the rainy weather. It was a good mix of getting a tour by Stephen our tour guide and letting us have some free time. It would have been nice to eat a little earlier and have more time in Costa Brava... we did not eat lunch until 3:30pm...but lunch was very good... overall a very nice tour.

This was a great day trip and I would recommend it! We were in Girona during a major independence protest, which was interesting to see and experience. We thought that the pace of this day trip was perfect, not too slow and not too fast. Our group consisted of about 20 people I think that is probably as big as it gets. Our guide, Anna, was very personable and tried to accommodate everyone's needs. She was very knowledge and friendly. She definitely made the trip a great experience for us.

I recently visited Barcelona for the first time. This tour to Girona, Palz, and Costa Brava was a vacation highlight._br/_ Our guide Veronica was awesome....She was super well-informed and seemed to really love the subject matter. I'm not a history buff, but her tour guide style, good energy, and interesting story telling, really kept my attention and I actually learned a lot about the history of this part of Spain...in addition to enjoying the breath taking views of Costa Brava...._br/_ The fact that Veronica was a Friends fan was an added bonus!

If you are interested in exploring Girona, Pals, and Costa Brava in their original medieval state we highly recommend this trip. Our tour guide Gloria was amazing, very knowledgeable and personable. She made the trip fun despite the rain towards the end of the tour.

We were a little travel weary and considered cancelling, but I am glad we did this tour. It showed us some wonderful sights and villages, and ended with a long lunch stay at a 'modern' resort town that subsumed the earlier fishing village. We had a wonderful alfresco lunch at a new restaurant overlooking the bay, but chose not to swim, and would prefer a shorter stay and earlier return to Barcelona, but overall it was a great day that showed yet another aspect of Spain. A good day.

The tour guide was excellent and the sights were awesome. The only thing I would change is that it woul have been nice to spend more time at the second village. It was quaint and charming but you don't have enough time to really enjoy it.

Exceptional tour. We learnt so much about the old city of Girona and had plenty of free time to explore on our own after the guided walk. The same can be said about our time in Costa Brava. Our short but interesting guided walk gave just enough information to make you want to explore more before hitting the beach. Tony's restaurant was a great place to eat if you like fresh seafood. Tour guide had exceptional skills and a great personality.

Exceptional tour! My husband and I visited in May 2016. Probably one of the best ones we have taken. From beginning to end the day was full of amazing history and views. Our guide as extraordinary, she was very knowledgeable and nice. Girona is just a stunning place, it happened to be during the Flower Festival weekend, it was a very busy day, tons of visitors from different areas, but that didnt bother us, we were glad we got to see it. And it gave it a very local feeling. The flowers arrangements were stunning. We had plenty time to walk the streets and grab a snack. Then we visited Pals, which I have to say, it could be one of the most beautiful medieval cities Ive seen, very small but gorgeous. After that we went to Calella de Palafrugel, which we really loved. Beautiful coastal city, with amazing food. We had time to walk the streets, eat and enjoy some gelato while admiring the views. I highly recommend this tour, the company was punctual and transportation was very comfortable.

Unfortunately the weather did not co operate but Enrique made the trip worthwhile with both educational and entertaining stories. Perhaps it was the weather but more time in Girona would be nice. The village of Pais was really interesting and picturesque. Lunch on the Costa Brava the perfect way to see the coast.

Guide was very good and he shared lot of information during our trip but we felt the trip cost was very expensive and not worth for the money being spent _br/_ This is second trip we have opted from Viator the first trip was Sintra and Cascis beach and service provider Viator had promised 5 discount on the subsequent trip but nothing is received as of now _br/_ Sincerely i will not recommend this trip for the offered cost 178 Euro / 2 person

Our guide Ana was a delight. My wife and I enjoyed the small group tour and our visits to Girona, Pals and Costa Brava. She was very informative, and a great driver on top of that. Girona is a beautiful town, and if you are a Game of Thrones fan, you will be very happy to know that Girona was fimed for Season 6 of GoT. After Ana gave us the tour, she allowed us to walk around and the explore the area further. The last trip to Costa Brava was awesome. It's a small fishing village, so it's by the beach, and the views were spectacular. You can eat with the group with an ocean view, or just grab a quick sandwich and explore the area on your own. I recommend this tour whenever you visit Barcelona. It's a nice break from being in the city all week.

A really wonderful day from beginning to end! Guide Gloria was exceptional in her commentary and clearly authentic interest in all of us on this small tour - 17 people total. We had a great drive to the beautiful town of Girona for spectacular views and history, then on to quaint Pals for another great experience, and finally a coastal town for lunch and private exploring. Of course absolutely blue skies and ambient temperatures made the experience even more remarkable! I totally endorse this tour!

Tour guide Arneu was really a great guide very knowledgeable about the various areas. Fantastic tour, probably better during warmer months when there's more to do in Playa Calella De Palafrugel.

Despite the awful weather, our guide made the most of this day. Loved the old city of Girona, I'm now watching S6 GoT again to recognise parts of the town. It would be spectacular in better weather. Pals and Costa Brava lovely, and the restaurant, La Vela was happy for us to wile away the time there with a yummy lunch of char grilled fish and a glass of vino. Our guide wisely assumed we'd all be happy to get back to Barcelona a little earlier due to weather.

This tour took us back in time. We got to see the antiquities of early Spain. The Roman wall and stone streets in Girona were alone worth the price. The Jewish Section was a wonderful experience. Our guide Joseph was an affable chap with a truly intrinsic knowledge of the area. The visits to the city of Pal and other stops along the beach gave us a flavor of life in Spain long ago plus a guide who talked to us about the intricacies of Spanish life today. Great tour...you will not be disappointed

Tour covered 3 locations. Guide was enthusiastic and young. She explained history from different perspectives. Would have liked more time in each place, put tour ran longer than described so not possible. It does include a lot of walking, uphill and downhill and over uneven ground.

My wife and i enjoyed seeing Girona and Costa Brava. it was very scenic. we could see snow clad mountains from Girona. Its a nice small town/village where you would love to take strolls along the waterfront. Costa brava too is indeed beaufitul. the scenery was mesmerizing. there could be few suggestions, like the bus seats were not exactly comfortable. Having wifi in the bus can help a lot of tourists.

Wonderful trip to Girona, Pals and Costa Brava on what would have been Thanksgiving Day in the US. Lovely medieval villages and beautiful country side seen on this trip. Last stop was a beautiful town on the Costa Brava where we had a leisurely late lunch looking at the Mediterranean with our terrific guide, Arnu. The coast was rocky and the sea was glistening in the sun. Would highly recommend.

Well organized and informative guide. The only negative was the vehicle which was a bit small for the numbers in our group - made traveling from site to site a bit uncomfortable.

This tour was great - Feliciano was engaging and lively and full of information. I particularly liked the stop in Pals. One caveat: in mid-November, the resort town of Calella and the other resort towns, I'm sure are closed up until April. I suggest bringing your own lunch, otherwise you are stuck with the very limited options available this time of year.

This tour is a great way to see more of the countryside and really interesting small towns near Barcelona. Girona's old city and cathedral are certainly a must-see, we also had a great local bakery visit there! In Pals I enjoyed our visit to a little shop selling local produce as well as the old stone streets and houses. There were great views, including breaking waves, at the coast. The only negative was a very long wait for some of us for our food at lunchtime, which left very little time for sightseeing._br/_ Our guide was a passionate Catalan who was willing to share his personal opinions and experiences as well as giving us detailed information about his region and its history. The staff at the Explore Catalunya office were very friendly and helpful.
