Private Tour: Girona, Pals and Peratallada Medieval Towns from Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

Discover the sights and stories of medieval Catalonia on a private day trip from Barcelona to Girona, Pals and Peratallada. With an expert guide, you will visit the Cathedral (the widest in Gothic style in the world) as well as its Museum, the hillside city of Girona and discover the charms of the medieval Old Town and the Arab Baths on a walking tour. Then, get up close to the bounty of historical monuments in Pals before enjoying free time in Peratallada, said to be one of the prettiest villages in the region. Throughout the tour, enjoy personalized attention from your private guide.

Start your private tour with a pick up from your hotel. Then, hop inside an air-conditioned minivan and travel to the ancient walled city of Girona in northern Catalonia. During the journey, hear how the hillside city is believed to have been founded around 76 BC, and ask your guide any questions you may have — the beauty of a private tour is that the commentary is entirely tailored to your interests.

On arrival, set off on a walking tour of Girona Old Town (El Barri Vell). With your guide leading the way, stroll along the labyrinth of narrow streets and soak up the old-world atmosphere. Pass by the 11th-century cathedral, wander through the Jewish quarter — one of the best preserved in Europe and head inside the Arab Baths with your guide to explore.

Then, return to your minivan and continue on to Pals, a charming medieval village built around a fortress. With your guide, explore the historical monuments in the village’s ancient center, including an impressive Romanesque tower — Torre de las Horas (Tower of the Hours) — which was constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries.

Next, make for Peratallada, one of Catalonia’s most beautiful villages. Here, you’ll enjoy around 1.5 hours of free time to stroll along the heritage stone streets and refuel with lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). On route to the restaurant, snap photos of the beautifully preserved lanes and heavy stone arches, and pass by a fortified castle and keep, a grand palace and a 12th-century Romanesque church.

When the time comes, join back up with your guide and minivan, and then relax on the return journey to your Barcelona hotel, where your tour concludes.

Amazing medieval villages!!! This was our splurge tour during our adventure to Barcelona and it was worth every penny spent!_br/_ Our guide Monica is clearly passionate about Catalonia and the history of the region. She provided an extensive history lesson and tied it all together as we walked through Girona and the two smaller villages. Since it was our first visit to the area, it was hard to take in all the information and all the beautiful sights. Girona is obviously the largest of the three cities and has a current history of being the filming location for some of the 'Game of Thrones' scenes. Peratallada and Pals are little gems and it was such a pleasure to wander the streets with no crowds. Seeing the extensive restoration work that has been undertaken in both villages is admirable. The incredible vista we were truly blessed with clear blue skies to the Mediterranean is breathtaking from Pals and is now one of my personal special memories._br/_ A great tour and a highly recommended side adventure if you are visiting Barcelona.

Our tour guide Vivian was amazing. She was knowledgeable on many topics regarding Barcelona in addition to the villages. We had free time and she provided so much information on the villages we visited. The tour was not rushed and we were allowed to spend as much time in each place as we wanted. Bring your walking shoes, water and get ready for a great time. Well worth the visit and a nice change for the bustling city of Barcelona.

Outstanding. Guide was extremely knowledgable and able to communicate the information well. My husband and I had some physical limitations and she was thoughtful in considering these limitations. I will definitely use Viator to schedule future tours on my upcoming trips. The guide on this private tour actually called us in The United States from Barcelona to make sure the itinerary matched our interests. Viator made all that possible. Thanks.

Amazing! A day well spent. Seeing the medieval cities was the highlight of our trip. It was like stepping back in time. Sites extraordinarily well preserved. Beautiful photographs that look like movie sets. Well worth the time and money.
