Small-Group Cava and Wine Day Trip from Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

Enjoy a relaxing day in the Spanish countryside while sampling some of Spain’s best wines and cava (Spanish sparkling wine). On this day trip from Barcelona, visit with a professional guide three different kinds of wineries in the Penedés region (famous for winemaking) that showcase the very best of Catalan cava. Learn the traditional and modern methods for producing wine and cava, discover the different varieties and, of course, taste them! The small group size of this tour ensures you'll spend an intimate day with like-minded wine lovers.

Explore one of Spain's most prominent winemaking regions on this small-group day trip from Barcelona. Meet your guide in central Barcelona and relax in a comfortable minivan as you make your way to the Penedés region of Catalonia. Vines have been growing in Catalonia for more than 2,000 years, and winemakers produce around 380 million bottles of wine annually. During your tour, learn about the industry and hear interesting facts about winemaking in Spain from your local guide.

After about an hour’s drive, arrive at your first stop, a local cava maker. Tour the winery with a member of the winery’s staff and learn about the cava-making process. Visit the deep underground cellar where the winery's first bottle of cava was produced more than 150 years ago!

Admire the winery’s modernist industrial architecture and hear about the technological innovations in winemaking that are combined with old traditions to produce the wonderful sparkling wine. At the end of your visit, sample some of the winery's most emblematic varietals.

Next, head to a smaller, family-run winery, where every worker is somehow related to the family. This winery has kept the artisan cava-making process alive and limits the use of machinery, creating a beautifully aged cava considered to be one of the best in Spain. You will have the good fortune to enjoy a sample of this delicate cava.

You’ll then have a 1.5-hour break for lunch (own expense) in a local village, where your guide will recommend some restaurants depending on your lunch preferences.

After lunch, sit back in your minivan as you head to an organic winery specializing in white and red wines, particularly tempranillo, pinot noir, garnatxa (known more commonly as ‘grenache’) and cabernet sauvignon. Enjoy a guided tour of the winery, and then relax in the bar as you sample a few of these beautiful wines.

Then head back to Barcelona, taking in views of the vineyards from the comfort of your minivan.

This was one of the best wine tours I have experienced. First off, our guide, Feliciano, was absolutely amazing! He truly made the tour exceptional. Each winery had it's own charming aspects, it was great to see a small family operation, a large-scale winery and finish with a medium size. We truly had a wonderful experience and would recommend this tour to anyone. Thank you for Feliciano for the amazing day!

A great wine tour! The tour driver was great and provided a lot of insights into the wineries and local information on the way to the wineries. Lunch was great and the wines were superb! We've been on wine tours all over and these wines compare to other wines if not better!

i loved this tour. I guess I was really lucky that day, the weather was so nice and sunny, although it's still winter We had the wine tasting outside the vineyard and there were only 5 of us, which was good and personalized. Then we had lunch outdoor again, which really made the tour so relaxed and memorable. I totally enjoyed this.

We went to three wineries. Our favorite was the smallest one Albet y Noya sp? we sat outside for our tasting and were not rushed. Our guide Ana was great and very personable. The restaurant she chose for lunch was amazing - Cal Xim - and only 29 euros per person, including wine.

Really terrific small group tour. We had 6 people on our tour and visited both large and small cava producers and wine makers. Every winery was fantastic, the lunch spot we visited was great and because we were a small group I didn't feel hearded from one location to the next. We really got to experience the region. Highly recommended.

This was the best winery tour we have taken on 3 continents. The vehicle was spacious and comfortable. Tour Guide, Dominic, was knowledgeable and friendly. The 3 vineyards differed in age, size and product, providing a cross section of the wines produced in Spains Catalonian region. The choice for lunch was perfect: off the beaten track, hearty country food with reasonable prices.

Great guide, Lydia, who drove us from vineyard to vineyard and never got annoyed with an obnoxious group member. The tour is good, but needs more variety in what it offers.

What a great tour !! I enjoyed so much visiting these 3 wineries. You will learn a lot from the different guides in each winery and they will explain all the secrets of producing their wines. We enjoyed a lot and we tried a lot of wines. At the end of the day we came back at our hotel happy. Nice driver, gave me a lot of tips about Catalonia traditions. A must do!!

The tour was excellent and our guide was very informative. However, the lunch break took over a half an hour to get to the restaurant, then had slow service, them another half an hour back to the wine country which caused us to miss the cave tour at Freixnet. While the restaurant was very nice, we all thought there was a lot of time wasted traveling on superhighways (not very charming) just to dine near Montserrat.

The one day CAVA tour from Barcelona was great.....no, no....it was fantastic!!! Although it lasted about 8 hours I was never bored due to the constant information and entertainment which was arranged by our very well versed guide. We visited 2 wineries, both of whom gave us an in depth experience of vinti and viniculture of their respective farms, and although the tour of Frexinett was commercial and unpersonal, it fitted in well with our itinerary. The fact that there were only 4 attendees made it personal and intimate and a day in the vineyards and cellars is highly recommendable with this tour company.

The first and second wineries we visited were great. We learned a lot about the making of sparkling wine. The restaurant we stopped at for lunch was really good. The food was Catalunya and very different from what we had so far. The third winery was a bust, but on a whole an awesome tour.

This was one of the best things we did all week. No one else showed up for the tour so we got a private tour for my husband, our 26 year old daughter and myself. We had a wonderful guide called Anna who was totally fun. Somehow the itinerary had gotten mixed up, but she reshuffled things around on the fly, and we ended up with what I suspect was a better tour than the original plan would have been. We started at a small family run winery where we were greeted by a young woman whose grand-father had had the vision to start making higher quality wine (the family has been growing wine grapes for more generations than they can count). She was relayed by her charming father who spent far more time with us than we were expecting. From there we went to Cordoniu wineries, which is one of the biggest in the world, and saw a completely different aspect of the wine industry. We ended our tour at a smallish boutique winery owned by a Barcelona restauranteur. We were again fortunate to be the only ones there, and to spend a great deal of time with our winery host. I would recommend this tour to everyone. Not only did we learn about wine, but also about history, and about Catalonian culture.

This was an incredible experience. The three bodegas chosen were all so different and showed a different style of the cava industry. Our guide was amazing. I felt like I was on a tour with a friend. The value of the trip was also very good. I would highly recommend this tour!

This was one of the best tours I have ever been a part of. It ended up being a VERY small group. My friend and I were the only two signed up that morning. The three vineyards we went to were well picked. Not only were the cavas and wines delicious, but our guide Ana was knowledgeable and hysterical. It was a fantastic day that we will not soon forget.
