Small-Group Tour: Traditional Food and Wine Day Trip from Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

Discover the flavors of Catalan food and wine on this small-group day trip from Barcelona. Sample cheese and wine in a beautiful medieval farmhouse overlooking the mountain of Montserrat; visit a former Benedictine monastery to sample local delicacies like home-cured meats; and taste different types of olive oil at another medieval farmhouse. Enjoy a traditional Catalan lunch at the farm's restaurant, and end your day trip with a guided tour of a winery, where you will enjoy cava and wine tastings. On this small-group tour, you will receive personalized attention from your tour guide.

Meet your guide in central Barcelona, relax on board a comfortable minivan and take in views of the Catalan countryside on your way to Montserrat, the craggy mountain that rises above the region. Stop in a charming village, famous for cattle raising and cheese making, and visit a beautifully restored medieval farmhouse to sample local cheese and wine. As you savor your tasting, admire views of your backdrop – the north face of Montserrat.

Continue to Santa Cecília, a former Benedictine monastery that is today a mountain shelter and a great example of early Catalan Romanesque architecture. Enjoy a short stop here to learn interesting facts about the history of the region, as how the monks influenced the farming and the gastronomic traditions. As you listen to your guide, sample locally grown treats like almonds, peaches, honey or home-cured meats, depending on the season.

Next, relax on the drive around Montserrat and discover the south face of the mountain, which has a different climate and landscape from the north side, making it ideal for olive trees and vines. Get closer to nature as you leave your minivan and follow your guide through a path between fields of olive trees.

Arrive at a 16th-century farmhouse, originally the property of the Monastery of Montserrat. Visit the farmhouse's old olive mill and the medieval water tanks, and learn about olive oil pressing and the different types of olive oil. Sample some of these, then enjoy a traditional lunch of products grown at the farm (upgrade your experience by traveling on a Sunday, where the menu features typical local Catalan dishes)

After lunch, head to the Penedés, a vibrant wine region known for its production of cava (Catalan sparkling wine). Stop at a local winery, where you will learn how cava is made on a guided tour of the winery's underground cellars and barreling room, and finish with a tasting of four different types of cava and wine.

Then sit comfortably in your minivan and admire views of the landscape on your way back to Barcelona.

The highlight of our time in Spain. Originally booked at the beginning of our trip, we had to move our tour to the end of our time in Spain. Our tour guide was Joseph, whose infectious enthusiasm for Barcelona and Spain, really made the experience for us. The tour begins with breakfast in a small mountain town w/ a breathtaking view of Montserrat. Pro tip - they make their own gin and honey! Buy some and you won't regret it! One of my favorite stops was at Vinya Nova for lunch and olive oil tasting. My biggest regret from my trip was not purchasing olive oil from this restaurant! The depth of flavor and golden almost buttery quality was unmatched in other olive oils I had tasted previously. I am still trying to convince people to go to Barcelona, take this tour.. and snatch me a couple of bottles! The tour is definitely a full day event, but one of the highlights of our total European adventure.

Great day great food and great guide what more could you ask for, even threw in a cooking lesson not that it really involved cooking. We were taught the spainish way of making bruschetta. Fun trip and being small everyone seemed to get along and enjoy the day

We reserved and paid for a van for our tour but were forced to take a car. There were 4 large adults and traveling in the car was very uncomfortable. We complained about the vehicle before we departed but were told we had to take the car, instead of a van, or lose our money. What would have probably been a very enjoyable tour turned out to be a total disappointment. I recommend against taking this tour or using this tour company as customer service is not their strong point.

Lovely day but the itinerary was quite different than described. Changing things up without any notice is not a great marketing plan.

I was fortunate enough to Josep as my tour guide and we got a private tour for two in a jaguar. Josep was an amazing tour guide who provided history and laughter. This was one of my favorite tours while we stayed in Barcelona. We had second breakfast at the cutest restaurant and the cuisine was fantastic. The visit to Monserrat was such a breathtaking experience and a spiritual one as well. The lunch prior to the winery visit was a culinary experience that we will never forget. I am still thinking about the codfish salad, paellla, coconut flan and of course the wine. The winery was also a treat because the wine was delicious and there was shipping available back to the US. I would say if you are lucky enough to have a tour with Josep, please make sure you do! If I could give him additional stars, I would.

We had a great day and our guide took us all the way up to Montserrat. Spectacular views! She was very helpful and told a lot of facts. We visited a bio/organic winery but didn't like their wine. Highlight was the lunch at the olive farm which was outstanding and best meal while in Barcelona.

We had a truly memorable day hosted by Joseph. First a lovely second breakfast on the way to Montserrat, where we had just the right amount of time to see the sights. The countryside we travelled through was pretty, and lunch in the foothills of Montserrat at Vinya Nova was exceptional. The final stop was a winery tour and tasting at Pares Balta which was interesting, but a little long on a hot day. For food and wine travellers this is a must do.

The best part of this was that, since there were only 4 people one couple, myself and the tour guide, it was very versatile. We had a fabulous breakfast, some really great chatting along the road, thought about doing a short detour to Montserrat, but turned back once we saw the car traffic, had an amazing lunch come really, really hungry and ended the day with some absolutely amazing wines!

We had a wonderful starting with a traditional breakfast of meats, cheese, country bread, tomato and of course wine. We then took a scenic tour including picking a few local wild berries along the way. The guide was fantastic, the food was fantastic and the scenery was beautiful. We love going to Barcelona and have been many times so it was wonderful to take a leisurely drive into the country and see how the locals live daily lives.

Our day with Joesef far exceeded our expectations. The cultural foods experience at breakfast and lunch was superior. The winery tour and wine/cava tasting was exceptional. We loved every minute of the day and the 10 hours spent with Josef flew by. If you love food, wine, history and natural beauty, you won't want to miss this experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our food and wine tour north of Barcelona! We loved learning about the region and seeing many of the sights Montserrat, etc while traveling through the region. Our guide was knowledgeable and obviously has a love for the region and his heritage. He made the travel time very informative also.

We loved our day in the mountains north of Barcelona! All of the food and wine experiences were excellent. Our guide, Josep, was very knowledgeable and fun to be with. He has a passion for the region and the traditions and it was fun to learn about them. We enjoyed the tomato bread and learning about the 0 km farming. The time in the Parre Balta winery was excellent also. Our stops along the way were very special as well. We would highly recommend this tour or any other of their Small-Group tours.

Loved this tour!!! A 90-minute brunch at 10:30 a.m., 45 minutes in Monserrat enough time to walk briskly and see the cathedral, a 90-minute lunch your choice on the menu, but avoid the lamb because it's full of oddly-cut bones, and a visit to a large, family-owned inery followed by a tasting of excellent cava and wine. Be careful to not step in sheep droppings at the winery! Highly recommended tour by me.

The tour was wonderful and the guide was great at taking time to explain and entertain. My one complaint is that when you take 10 paying guests in a van intended to seat a total of 10 passengers it is very crowded and someone has to sit crowded behind the gear shift.

We booked this trip outside of the tours included in our vacation package and it was well worth it. The first stop was in a small village where we had a typical Calalonia breakfast with wine. Lunch was in a rustic farm house in the middle of an olive grove. The food with wine was delicious and plentiful. Needless to say our journey to the next town was quite a lively one. Our guide, Enrique, was great. So friendly, great sense of humour and very knowledgeable about the area. He really made our trip memorable. If you're looking for a small group tour, spectacular mountain views with good food and wine don't miss this one. It was by far our favourite. Thank you Enrique!

This tour is excellent as a city break and is a must for wine lovers. Our guide Enrique makes all the difference. He is fun loving and funny, just the right man on this tour and I am sure the entire group agrees on that as well. The whole day was merry and merry. Had wine on the included breakfast, lunch and afternoon winery tour. One of the most memorable tour I have taken in Barcelona.

Review by:   Rhea,    September 2015 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
This trip is definitely NOT for foodies. A very disappointing and too long of a day. The description of the tour boasted sampling locally produced meats, cheese, and vegetables, but it was nothing more than a quick bite before going to the next location. We didn't get a chance to talk the farmers or tour the farm. At the first 2 locations, the food and wine was brought out, but we were not even told what type of wine we were drinking. After the cheese/meat snack by Montserrat, we drove 30 minutes to see the monastery. We only had 15 minutes to take in the view before we had to leave for our lunch reservations. After lunch we drove for 45 minutes to a winery. This was the highlight of the trip. Sylvia at the winery Pares Balta was extremely informative. She took us out into the vineyards to sample the grapes off the vine and discuss the growing techniques. This tour would have been much better if the first two stops meat/cheese snack and lunch were omitted and just focused on visiting the monastery at Monserrat and the vineyard tour. I would have rather spent a half day between the monastery and the vineyard, vs 9 hours rushing through four stops.

If you love food and wine and meeting new people from different countries, this trip is a must. We were on a City Break to Barcelona, but fancied something a bit different and were very glad we did this trip. The traditional breakfast was probably one of my favourite parts of the trip. You got a really good insight and feel of a traditional Spanish breakfast as you are taken somewhere where no normal tourist would go. The traditional Spanish lunch however wasn't so traditional as we weren't told that it was the Spanish holidays therefore for two weeks of the year, some people go away, therefore our lunch was based in a restaurant and not outside like I hoped We went towards the end of August. Saying that, the lunch at Ticus was AMAZING! The best fresh pasta dish I have ever had! The wine tasting is ideal for first timers, as it gives you an easy and interesting insight into wine and cava and of course the wine tasting part of the trip was brilliant. Our tour guide Feliciano was brilliant, such a laid back friendly guide with great knowledge of Barcelona and Spain in general. All in all a worth while trip, thank you.

Despite the clouds and drizzle, we had a great day away from Barcelona, north to Montserrat. The local places we stopped to make our own tomato bread, and sample local meats and cheeses was enjoyable. The low hanging clouds at Montserrat actually gave a majestic feel like we were above the clouds. Also enjoyed eating grapes off the vines, touring the vineyard, and tasting wines and cava at the vineyard.

This was the best trip of my holiday. The guide, Feliciano Doniguez, was probably the best guide I have ever had. His knowledge of everything to do with the area and of the food and wine associated with it was excellent. Don't have any breakfast before you go. The food commencing from the large breakfast to the 4 course lunch to the wine tasting is superb. Well worth the money. I would highly recommend this day out.

The food was very good and the visit to Montserrat was a very pleasant surprise. However we felt our guide did not give us much information about where we were. I had to ask her when we stopped where we were. She appeared more to be a friendly driver rather than a guide. It would have been good to have more commentary as we travelled, as we did another tour today with another company and it was so much more informative with pointing out different things as we travelled. _br/_ However it was a pleasant day out.
