Wine and Cava Day Trip from Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

On this wine-tasting tour from Barcelona, spend a relaxing day in the countryside as you sample wine and learn about cava (Catalan sparkling wine). You will venture into the Penedès region to discover some of Catalonia's most iconic wineries. Learn how different varieties of wine are produced and, of course, taste them! Your local guide will lead you from one winery to another, entertaining you with interesting facts about Catalonia, wine and cava-making.

Catalonia is one of Spain’s most prominent wine-producing areas, boasting 11 appellations of origin. Vines have been growing in Catalonia for more than 2,000 years, and today Catalonia produces 380 million bottles of wine a year, including cava, which accounts for half of this production.

On this day trip from Barcelona, you’ll first visit Bodegues Jean Leon in the middle of the Penedès region. You will go on a guided tour and taste two different wines at this award-winning winery.

Then head to Bodegues Torres, where you will learn more about the production of various wines. You will see that it takes hard work to produce a good wine. At this winery, you’ll enjoy tastings of three wines, as well as three cheeses of the region.

Finally, visit Caves Freixenet, the last winery of your tour. Here is where you will learn about the process of making cava. You’ll sample two cavas, as well as some delicious tapas.

Your guide will be with you throughout your tour, answering questions and providing you with interesting information about the wine region.

Again, this is a tour we would give 4.5 stars, if available. There were about 20 of us on a comfortable bus. We visited the small Jean Leon winery and had a very nice tour and excellent wine tasting with cheese, olive, crackers, etc. A very knowledgeable host was a bonus and the everything was excellent. This was followed by a visit to the Torres winery, which is one of the largest in Spain and was quite amazing in the size of its operation. However, that was no drawback, as the wines they served with their most excellent selection of cheeses, were superb. We wished we could purchase more than the one bottle, but will have to find them at home. The last visit was to the Friexenet winery. Again, excellent wines served with local meats and cheese. Another really enjoyable and worthwhile tour. Our only complaint would be having to listen to the same long-winded announcements on the bus in two or more languages before each stop.

This was an excellent tour with 14 English speaking people and 2 non-English speaking people which caused the guide to spend an unexpected amount of time with the 2 non-English speaking tourists. The tour was advertised as English speaking, so we were disappointed at all the dead time waiting for 2 people to catch up with the rest of the group. The guide also seemed confused that these two people were assigned to the group, as he told us he did not expect nor does he normally conduct bi-lingual tours. Other than the lag time, this was a very good tour and we felt it beat expectations based on our entry level knowledge of the wine region. The wineries selected for this trip were excellent choices which presented a great overview of the region and wine making styles.

Tour was great, the scenery was wonderful and you get about 10 full sized pours, plus cheese at Torres and Tapas at Frexinet! Tour at Torres and Freixenet was very informative.

What a fun day. I enjoyed drinking as well as learning about all of the wines that we experienced. All 3 wineries had their own unique experiences for the group. We were both pleased by the environmental consciousness that is practiced by the businesses. I am a bit more discriminating b/c of what I learned when buying wines since my experience.

The vineyards were great to see. Torres was fantastic. The way they set up the wine tasting was spectacular. I have ordered their wines now a couple of times.

The trip was first class all the way! We enjoyed each experience. By the time we reached the last place, we had become friends with other people on our tour. Each winery was an experience!

If you are looking to have a day full of relaxing and wine tasting this tour isn't for you...if you are looking for a day full of wine education and a big group with an impersonal feel, then this tour is for you.

We visited three wineries and one cava winery. They were all similar with several tastings and information on wine making. One had wonderful tapas. The trip was outside Barcelona. Trip was fine. Suggest that you sign up for a winery trip with lunch - might be more enjoyable

Very interesting tour especially the Cava caves, tasted 2 cavas there along with some ham/meats. Tasted 4 wines paired with 4 cheeses at Torres vineyards. Only 1 wine tasted at Jean Leon, but tour was informative...got to taste grapes on the vine. I would prefer a smaller tour group-we had 2 bus loads.

This is the best wine tour I have ever been on. You see three totally different wineries - a smaller, more intimate winery, a larger, internationally-known winery, and a cava tour. The diversity of the three stops really made this experience a unique one. I learned a lot, was able to taste a lot of great wine/cava, cheese, and tapas, and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of my group and tour guide.

This was a fabulous tour! We visited three different Wineries, each one of them had a different method of making wine. I and #39;ve visited many wineries in the United States, but learned a lot about the differences in the organic Vineyards and the cava wineries in the caves. Met some wonderful people, too

The wine tasting was great and at all three vineyards they were very knowledgeable. I only gave the tour 3 stars because we only had crackers and cheese to eat all day and it wasn and #39;t enough food for the amount of wine we were drinking. I wish lunch was included or we could buy lunch somewhere.

We loved the trip! They provide all the entrance fees and handle all the driving. Feel free to drink as much as you like, enjoy the other travelers and not have to worry about getting lost, translations if you don't speak Catalan or Spanish. We thought the highlight of the trip was the Cava stop at Freixnet...great stuff, interesting story and very interesting production process. Our guide on the bus wasn't particularly useful but each stop had a guide provided who was much better. Our tour was mostly english speaking folks but they also provided a separate French translator at two stops and for one couple who was Spanish but understood most english they also translated. The bus driver was safe and efficient and the bus was clean and well maintained...which is not always the case!

Tour went to 3 wineries,John Leon,Torres and Freixenet for cava ._br/_ Leon was a smaller boutique winery with an interesting history . We only sampled 2 wines , though they had many for sale which We may have bought if we had sampled._br/_ Torres and Freixenet are large volume producers that had good tasting wines and cava for reasonable prices. _br/_ all in all aa worthwhile tour with some walking and steps involved.

Overall it was great, except for two major, major problems:

Review by:   therese_H,    March 2017 Review: 4 star rating: Recommended
Had a wonderful time. I would only suggest that the winery tours be a bit shorter to allow time for tasting and purchasing wine. Perhaps, some of the winery tours can be edited to skip some of the wine production process which can be repetitive by the third stop. We felt very rushed through the wine/cheese pairing and did not have any time to purchase anything. But we still enjoyed the day!

The tour was fun we went to three wineries. The downside is that it was a bus tour in two languages, which made the visits rushed.

This tour of the wineries/cellars was very well planned, organized and executed. Each of the cellar visits was very informative, entertaining and fun, and each was very different from each of the others ..... there was nothing repetitive. The tour leader, Lila, was sweet and did an excellent job of making things run smoothly. Five stars all the way around. :

Excellent adventure a little bit outside of Barcelona. Our guide was very friendly and informative, which continued with the three guides we met at each winery. The wine and cava were all delcious and only surpassed by the interesting histories and vinification processes of each location. Highly recommend!

We did 6 tours with Viator while in Barcelona and this was our least favorite and would not recommend it. First wine tasting should be a more intimate experience and we were on a large tour bus with 40 people. Second it was long and got a bit boring in the end. The first winery is beautiful and I loved Jean Leon's story. The tasting of two wines basically 2 glasses of wine were good and we also tried two chardonnays. The second winery had an amazing tasting of 4 wines and 4 cheeses. The little train that drives you around is great also. The third stop is Caves Frexenet...I loved the cava and tapas at the end. But this tour is just too much...going down 70 meters is cool, but it was so hard to focus and concentrate on the overly extensive explanations in a group of 40 while struggling to hear. It would have been better to walk through and read on our own. I believe this could be so much better if the group was 15 or less and if it was cut down to a 5 hour tour easily done. I have traveled to about 20 different wine regions in the world.

I chose this wine tour over others because it focused on 3 of the more well known wineries in the region. I wanted to be able to try wines from a popular winery that are more accessible at home USA than a smaller winery where I won't be able to find or order bottles from back home. I'm glad I did this tour, all 3 wineries were completely different in atmosphere and taste. It was nice and varied. While on the way, our fun tour guide showed us short videos which give you a quick overview of each winery before you arrive. They give you a LOT of wine to try :-, and you can purchase additional glasses of wines to try for a small fee at each winery. Awesome!

Review by:   viator julie,    July 2016 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
A lesson in reading the description carefully. I thought this was a small group tour, and it was a bus tour. The day started fine, with Jean Leon Winery-an interesting small winery. Bodeques Torres was also interesting. However, the day ended at Freixenet, which we learned makes better cava than the cheap stuff we get in the US. However, we didn't get to taste their good wine- we tasted the Black Bottle Freixenet Negron, which is sold all over the world and is nothing special. Having paid a lot of money for a unique experience, this was a hugely disappointing end to the day.

Fabulous! Dina was a fantastic guide with a lot of knowledge. The wineries were fantastic and tastings and accompanied snacks were perfect. The group size was just right. I totally recommend it to anyone who likes wine and cava and wants to do something a little different while on holiday.

This was a great tour. We enjoyed all three wineries and met a lot of great people. Jean Leon was very interesting to learn about how he started and came back to create this wonderful winery. Torres was an excellent tour with a train ride to see the huge vineyard and production. We had 4 wine and cheese tastings. Cavas Freixenet was entertaining as well. All in all we purchased 12 bottles to bring back with us to NC.

This was a most enjoyable wine and cava tour. The center where you load on the bus is a bit chaotic but otherwise the tour director did a super job and the sights and drinks were excellent.

Great tour to get out of the city and sample wine and cava! Jean Leon winery has stunning views, as does Torres. Torres offers cheese with your wine and you get pairing suggestions too. Frexient is a very cool spot to tour...going down into the caves and seeing the facilities was really interesting. Good area to hang out after and enjoy bubbly and snacks too. Everything was kept on track. Overall a very well organized tour and a fun day. HIghly recommend.

We enjoyed this trip to 3 vinyards - the wines were good and tour guides excellent in the wineries. But the guide on the bus was more interested in training his co-worker than talking to the clients. Viator use a local tour operator who then subcontract another ocmpany - but it was good. The Torres Winery was excellent and the Cava place good - both had railways that took us around their sites. Good explanations

I wish the tour had been longer as you feel like you're rushed at the first two wineries. The wine is good and the tapas they provide are a nice touch. As others have stated I recommend bringing snacks with you for the bus ride.
