Full-Day Group Tour of American D-Day Beaches from Bayeux

Full-Day Group Tour of American D-Day Beaches from Bayeux

Bayeux, France

Full day sightseeing tour of the American sectors of the D-Day Normandy invasion. An experienced English speaking guide will show you the battlefield sites and explain in detail the events that occurred.

The tour departs Bayeux, and while driving between sites, the English-speaking guide will also share anecdotes, veteran stories, and much more.

When you arrive at each location, the guide will show you around, explain in detail what happened, and then allow free time to take photos, etc.

Principal sites visited on this tour:

La Cambe German Cemetery - We start this tour with a short visit to the largest German cemetery in Normandy. We feel it is important to explain to our clients the Axis side of events before we start talking about what America was required to do to end the war in Europe.

Angoville-Au-Plain - At this location, you will hear the incredible story of Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore: two American Airborne Medics. For two days, these two brave men offered care to American and German soldiers in a 1000 years old church.

Utah Beach - The westernmost landing beach that U.S. forces assaulted. Hear how events unfolded and the role that Theodore Roosevelt played in achieving ultimate success against the German defenders.

Lunch stop - Included in the price of this tour is lunch in our very own cafe. You will eat in a historic house that is full of artifacts from the Normandy invasion. Our special lunch stop is exclusive to clients booking tours with us. Lunch will consist of a large baguette sandwich with a choice of fillings. Hot and cold drinks, potato chips, and cakes are available. Lunch will be pre-ordered by the guide when boarding the vehicle.

Sainte Mere Eglise - An objective for the 82nd Airborne in the early hours of D-Day. Hear the incredible story of paratrooper John Steele, who got caught on the church steeple during the drop.

Pointe Du Hoc - Hear the amazing story of the American Rangers who had to scale nearly 100ft cliffs to silence a German long range gun battery position. You will be in awe when you see the battle damage and the German bunkers that remain at this impressive site.

Omaha Beach - This turned out to be the most difficult landing beach attacked on D-Day. Hear the harrowing stories of sacrifice, see the German positions that were almost impossible to overcome, and hear stories of bravery that finally allowed the U.S. to prevail.

Normandy American Cemetery and Visitor Center - This is a fitting end to the tour. You will be able to spend time in the Visitor Center and walk the magnificent 172 acres of the cemetery. You will be able to pay your respects to many of the people you will have heard about during the tour.

You also pass by other sites of interest where the guide will share stories.

We knew this would be a great tour, but it was better than we imagined. Ian Everingham, our guide, was so knowledgeable and explained everything in great detail. I never expected to learn as much as I did. He answered all questions thoroughly and was very entertaining. We were really glad we had time to take the full day tour. Neither of us will forget the experience.

I really enjoyed the guide's historical background info as well as the tour route he did. I learned a lot and made connection with the history of the area.

Before I arrived in Normandy I was convinced that I could not possibly look upon the World War II veterans with any more admiration and respect than I already had for them. I was proven wrong by going on a Viator tour of the D-Day beaches. The intimate stories, the sites they chose to tour, and just being at the American Cemetery, brought a whole new level of insight and emotion that I never expected to experience when booking the tour. They do a first rate job and made my first trip to France beyond memorable.

The D-Day tour was amazing. We had Mike as a tour guide and he did a great job. He knew a lot of details and I can’t recall a single question he was not able to answer. We started with the German cemetery, went to Utah Beach, Pointe du Lac, stopped for lunch at a cafe decorated as it would have been in the 1940s, went to Omaha Beach, and finally wrapped up with the US cemetery when flags were lowered for the day. It was an awesome experience. I would highly recommend it!

I would rate this more than 5 stars if I could. We had the good fortune to have the owner of Bayeux Tours, Andy, as our guide. He is extremely knowledgeable about this period of history in the area and his passion makes the events that happened come alive. Although it was a long day, because there were multiple stops throughout the day it didnt seem to be long at all. In fact, we could have used a little more time at several places. Andys use of the time in the van traveling to the different sites was used well with his discussion and videos. He gave a balanced view of the first stop, a German cemetery and the tour ended with the lowering of the flag and taps at the US cemetery. He also had a lunch stop at a wonderful place he is renovating with WWll memorabilia to provide further insights into the time period. I would highly recommend this tour and would definitely take another tour with Bayeux Tours if I had the opportunity.

Mark's enthusiasm for all thing WWII and the events of D-Day made me feel like the money spent for the tour was well worth it. We had a car and could have visited all of the sites on the tour on our own but would have missed the stories and details Mark provided. Well done Mark!

WWII has been my passion for a long time, so it was a life-long dream to get to stand on the same ground as all the brave men and women that served those 70 odd years ago. The experience would not have been complete without our tour guide Mike. His enthusiasm and professionalism was fantastic and just having him share his own personal stories and other items he had picked up from past experiences and tours really helped bring the tour to a whole new level. I would recommend both Mike and the tour to any and all that wish to experience the same thing I did.

Tom was an amazing guide! He is so knowledgeable and kept our interest throughout the whole day. At every stop, he was able to give us a backstory and describe exactly what we were looking at or the significance of where we were standing. Besides the crazy cold wind, my husband and I both really enjoyed this tour. Even though I am not a big history fanatic I had a great day and would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking to visit these sights.

Fantastic, informative, and moving tour. Our guide, Mike, was very knowledgeable and, even better, passionate about the subject matter. Only downside is that, even with the full day tour, there isn't much time at any of the stops. Would recommend planning an extra day to spend in the region if you want to have time to go back and extend your visit to any of the sites.

My sister and I took this tour. Going to Normandy was essential to us as our dad was in the second wave. The guide we had regaled us with relevant and sometimes devastating stories. He was fabulous. The whole tour was well worth the trip.

I'd rate the tour guide and the experience highly, but just be aware that this is a 9-hour tour and it feels like it. It's a looooong day. For history buffs, it's probably awesome since it does hit the crucial areas and really does a great job of making you feel and experience first-hand what it must have been like during that horrific time. I certainly have a better awareness and appreciation for D-Day and the unbelievable efforts from our troops. But by the end of the day, we were cold, tired and sort of wished it could have been a bit shorter duration overall.

A must for every American. Our guide Mike had amazing facts, figures, and stories to share...visiting Normandy without the benefit of a knowledgeable guide would not have been nearly as memorable. One of the best tours weve ever taken.

Book this tour!!! Lloyd was our tour guide and he was amazing! Very knowledgeable and was great with answering questions ind detail. He said history was also his hobby and I believe him. We realized he was actually pretty sick that day he was throwing up during lunch out back but he never let it show how horrible he was feeling. I thought he would jip us a little because he was feeling to awful, but on the contrary, he even went above and beyond when we found out my dad was apart of the 1 ID- Big Red 1 Division who landed on Omaha Beach. My dad is not a WWII Vet but it still meant a lot to be where his predecessors were. Lloyd mentioned there's a memorial for the 1ID that'a a little out of the way and he doesn't normally go to it but wanted to take my dad there. Again, Lloyd is sick but making this experience a once in a lifetime for us. _br/_ My dad was also skeptical of taking a tour because he knows so much about WWII, let alone D-Day, but Lloyd still told us stories and facts not even my dad knew about. I'd do this trip again in a heartbeat. ESPECIALLY if you're a history junkie you should take it with a tour guide. They give more meaning and details to the sites then you'd even think about. Great history, great tour guide, great experience.

We have a great time on our Full Day Group Tour of American D-Day booked with Viator!! Our tour guide, Jon, was excellent not only in his knowledge of the actual and many events of D-Day but also his knowledge of all the little stories that one very rarely hears about. You can tell Jon not only loves history especially WWII but his enthusiasm is so very contagious and gets the whole group delving deeper and deeper into this major and life changing event that touches all of us even today. My uncle, a part of an Engineering Battalion, landed on Omaha Beach on July 3, 1944, and it was a very emotional moment to stand on that beach that he actually landed on. Thank you Jon for your knowledge, your humor and your patience answering all our questions!!

Lloyd from Wales was our driver and guide and an absolute expert in all things Normandie. Punctual pick-up from an easy to find meeting place. Comfortable bus with overhead video screen which gave interesting insight to the places we would see and accounts from those who were there before us. We visited all the important must see spots such as Utah and Omaha beaches, the American Cementary, but also enjoyed some places and stories at many of the lesser known destinations in the area. He was able to get us very close to experiencing Normandie as the wonderful people in Normandie did on D-Day. We enjoyed lunch in a restored cafe offering a variety of salads and sandwiches. I support seeing this area with a guide. So much to see . . . And so much you will miss if you aren't an expert. All 4 of us loved what we saw and how we got to see it. Enjoy!

Jon, our tour guide, was exceptionally knowledgeable about even the smallest of details of everything related to before, during and after the D-Day invasion. His facts and information, along with being on the various beaches, etc, made the whole D-Day experience come alive for me in a way I will NEVER forget. Of all the tours on my recent European trip. this one made the biggest and most lasting impression. This tour gets an A from me.

What an amazing experience. The multimedia experience made it all so real. Especially the clips of the men that were there. Our driver and tour guide had been studying World War II since he was a kid. He was so knowledgeable and answered all our questions. Small details that rounded out the story were his specialty. The group is limited to 12 so it wasn't a huge bus. Lunch was a sandwich, soft drinks, chips and a sweet.

I cannot imagine a better tour of the WW II battlefields and an historical account. Our guide was a gifted story teller and was passionate about the subject. He not only provided key facts, he presented lessons learned from the various assaults, e.g., the importance of being able to improvise when plan A does not work. Lunch was tasty and atmospheric. Educational and emotionally stirring.

Stops included small chapels with supplemental stories plus the beaches. The trip is long, but perfect for anyone with only 1 day

It's sobering to walk the battlefield where so many Americans gave their lives to open a doorway to the European continent and enable the Allies to defeat Hitler and the Nazi's. Our tour guide Jon was extremely knowledgeable, he had more than enough information to keep the tour interesting and he only scratched the surface of what he knows. This was my second tour with this company, the previous trip was their half-day. This is absolutely worth the money and time, you will not be disappointed.

We wanted to see all the WWII sights in one day. This tour covered everything. It was amazing and our guide John did an amazing job of giving us all the details on each of the sights we visited. That day it was very cold and rainy but that did not negative impact the trip. I thought I was very familiar with all the Day Invasion details but found out that I was very mistaken.

Review by:   Richard W,    September 2017 Review: 4 star rating: Recommended
The guide was well informed on WWII history and answered all our questions. The issue we had was with the actual van. It was a newer van with comfortable seating so that was not the problem. The problem was if you were seated in the very back seat, there was so much road noise that it was hard to hear the driver or the video as it was narrated. There was no speaker in the back. Elderly people are hard of hearing anyway without the extra outside road noise. The driver increased the volume on his mike but it made it really loud for the people in front. Otherwise the entire tour was wonderful.

From the moment we met our guide, Lloyd, a Welshman, we knew we would have a good day--and we did. This young man has the knowledge of a college professor but with a sense of humor. This should not suggest he is anything less than sober and respectful when appropriate. He even cautioned us to empathize with the majority of the German dead who were simply young men ordered to serve. We were kept informed of where we were going and when we would be there. Early on we had to go to a train station to pick up four clients arriving from Paris. This surely cost us some time but I can't say what it may have taken from the tour. Order your excellent sandwich at check in and stop at a great little house with army artifacts from the day for lunch. A nice touch. This was a long day with a lot of walking and in and out of the van a very nice Mercedes, btw so be rested and prepared! _br/_ Thanks Lloyd for a great day!

This was an excellent tour with a small group, comfortable van, and personable guide. Charles L was knowledgeable and provided an informative tour even to those of us familiar with the events. He clearly had studied the history here. We visited the important sites for the American sector with excellent commentary by Charles. The tour does not include a visit to the museum at Utah Beach, but that does not require a guide. We visited it on our own on another day. Compliments to Andy S. who was able to reschedule our tour for a later day after our flight from the US was cancelled and rescheduled for the next day. We appreciated his extra effort. I highly recommend this tour. You do need a full day to see and appreciate the history here.

This was an absolutely amazing tour. Andy was very knowledgeable, friendly, enthusiastic and most of all, very passionate on the subject. This tour took us to one of the German cemeteries and some smaller but no less important locations which I found just as interesting as seeing all the major locations. One of the highlights was watching the flags come down at the American cemetery and hearing TAPS being played while it happened. We were lucky in that we caused the whole tour to start later than expected, but Andy was so great and just pushed the time table a bit and we got to see the ceremony at the cemetery as a result. We had our 3 kids all in their 20s with us and they loved the whole tour. Andy kept their interest and made the tour very relatable to them. We cannot say enough good things about this tour and the amazing company Andy has built.

THIS WAS AN AMAZING TOUR!! One that anyone of any nationality should take. Lloyd Scott of Bayeux Shuttle is an extremely knowledgeable tour guide, bringing you directly into the events of June 6, 1944 and making you feel as though you were there and experiencing what the troops did on that day. Our tour had weather conditions very similar to those of that day and made the tour and feel all that more memorable. Lloyd did not hesitate at all in any of his historical facts of D-Day and was most impressive in his explanations and details of the events. The final stop of the tour, the American Cemetery, was probably the highlight of the tour where at 5:30 PM on the button, taps is played at the lowering of the American flag at the end of the reflecting pool. Very moving and makes one proud to be an American. This final resting place for so many American GI's, is so very reminiscent of Arlington National Cemetery with the grounds so perfectly groomed and maintained, such a fitting tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice on that day and days, months and years later. Lloyd, keep up the great work and know that I will refer any and all that desire to visit Normandy and the D-Day Memorials to you and your tour group. You and Tom have done a great job with the renovation of the little café/bar where you provided lunch. The only drawback of the entire day was the inability to visit all the museums very thoroughly at each of the sites, but aside from that, this was an excellent tour!!

Looking for a D-Day tour? Or any tour in the Normandy area for that matter? Look no further than the Bayeux Shuttle! We booked two tours with this company full-day group tour of American D-Day beaches, Mont St. Michel and could not have been more pleased with our decision. We know you have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to your tour, but honestly, this family-run operation deserves every ounce of positive feedback they can get. From pre-trip interactions with Andy the CEO and Emma his wife to the on-site tour experience with our phenomenal guide Charles the best of the best -- these people know what it's about. My husband and I were visiting the area and were absolutely blown way by the hospitality, friendliness, responsiveness, knowledge and grade A customer service from the entire team at Bayeux Shuttle!! Not only does the company allow you to book online so there's comfort in knowing you have your spot reserved, they have a satellite-based GPS system that shows you where you're going and gives incredible video commentary/context before each tour stop. We had a big age range of fellow tour guests from all over the world, and all of us were floored by the experience. THANK YOU to the entire team at Bayeux Shuttle. We love you guys and will recommend you far and wide to all visiting the area!!
