Normandy Battlefields Day Trip: Omaha, Sword and the British Airborne Sector

Bayeux, France

Retrace the first days of the Battle of Normandy on this World War II battlefields tour from Bayeux. Visit important WWII sites including Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach, the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Pegasus Bridge, the Merville Battery Museum, Sword Beach and the Hillman Bunker as your guide tells you about the events of D-Day involving British forces. If you have a relative who fought in the war or are simply interested in 20th-century history, you'll find this Normandy beaches tour a fascinating and moving experience.

Numbers are limited to eight people on this small-group tour by minivan, ensuring a more personalized day trip.

This full-day Normandy battlefields tour starts with pickup from Bayeux by minivan. Your first stop is Pointe du Hoc, where the German battery was attacked by US Rangers on D-Day. Hear about the daring feat of the Rangers who scaled the cliffs to destroy the German gun position — a scene that was portrayed in the war film Saving Private Ryan. The massive fortifications and bunkers were completely destroyed, leaving the site like an eerie lunar landscape.

Next, drive along the coast to Omaha Beach, the battlefield that saw the most causalities of any D-Day landing. Then make your way up to the beautiful Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, where 9,387 service men rest in peace.

See Pegasus Bridge and its sister bridge, the sites of one of the most successful D-Day operations. It was vital for these bridges to be captured intact in order to deny the Germans a crossing point over the Orne river and canal, which together run parallel to the sea from Caen. The paratroopers held their position despite numerous enemy counter-attacks until they were joined by British troops advancing south from Sword Beach.

You’ll then visit the Merville Battery Museum to learn about the men of the 6th British Airborne. This small group of determined British soldiers managed to succeed in their D-Day mission to capture and destroy German guns that were strategically placed to shoot down Allied forces.

Further west you’ll visit Sword Beach, the easternmost landing site of the Allied invasion where the British 3rd Infantry Division landed on their way to Caen. Continue to the Hillman Bunker, part of the inland defenses of the Sword Beach sector. Here, visit the underground bunkers that were once connected by trenches and surrounded by barbed wire and minefields to protect the Germans gun batteries against Allied attacks.

Your last stop is the Bayeux War Cemetery, the largest WWII cemetery of the Commonwealth soldiers in France containing 4,648 graves of soldiers who fought in the Invasion of Normandy.

At the end of the day, relax on the drive back to the original departure point in Bayeux.

Please note: Due to special events taking place to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, this tour could be amended on June 5, 6, and 7, 2014. It may not be possible to access the beaches, in which case alternative sites will be included instead.

This trip could not have been better, nor could the guides have been more attentive. Great day, one of the best tours I have ever done.

I never realized how long the beaches were. What an amazing undertaking to conquer those beaches despite the fortified references. Very interesting and informative tour.

Six people in our extended family were happy to find that one Volkswagen van would accommodate just us, and the driver/tour guide, Sophia, was not only an excellent driver but also fluent in English and French. Her ability to convey place and time in historical context was excellent. What surprised us was the sheer length of the Normandy landing - some 90 kilometers I believe. That would factor in to just how much could be covered in nine hours.

It was a good day. The tour guide seemed to have the facts accurate as we are history buffs. _br/_ Would have enjoyed more time at Point du Hoc and American Cemetery. _br/_ It was too bad the others were not able to see Omaha Beach at Low tide. It has such more of an impact. Luckily we stayed at Omaha and were able to walk the beaches at low tide. I would suggest arranging the day differently._br/_ Other low points: The bus has 12 large adults and it was uncomfortable as it felt over-crowded._br/_ Pegasus Bridge was reproduction and the original was 1 block away at a museum which we just walked past._br/_ With as many places as there are to eat including Hotel du Casino Omaha Beach and many others, were taken to Bayeux and directed to a few streets to pick our own, but it worked._br/_ The following day, we had a rented car and did enjoy this much more at our own pace, but the roads can be a bit confusing so the tour does work well for that._br/_ We will go back to Normandy as there are is so much to see. If were to do it again, we should have chosen the American Sectors for us.

We loved the tour, all very informative and well led. _br/_ Would have liked a little longer in some places but on the other hand perhaps that would have meant not seeing so much? So on balance, excellent, would recommend to anyone.

This tour was well conducted, planned and documented, it quickly toured a number sites in one full day. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and gave lots of anecdotal information from her parents who directly endured the occupation and subsequently D-Day. There were a number of maps, charts and photos used to thoroughly explain all of the visits and surrounding events. The Normandy area is covered with D-Day sites and they cannot all be covered in one day. This was a best compromise to get a feeling for the battlefield and what went on during the first few days of the allied invasion on D-Day. A trip to Omaha beach effectively showed what the Soldiers were up against once they got on to the beach and off of it into the hedgerows and small fields inland from the beach. Other sites included Sword beach British, the Pegasus Bridge where British glider troops assaulted and held two critical bridges, Merville Artillery Battery which very effectively showed life in a German gun position and a British military cemetery as well as the American cemetery at overlooking Omaha beach. I would recommend this trip for first time visitors to the area or those who have not done extensive reading on the events surrounding D-Day.

We booked a full day tour of Normandy. However, since our regular guide just returned at midnight the night before from a private tour of Paris, we ended up having another guide in the morning and she returned us back to our hotel by noon; then we had to meet the regular guide at another location at 1:15pm. We ended up heading out towards Normandy twice in that same day. It certainly would have been better to have stayed out in Normandy once we rode there the first time.

My father loved this. My mother and I probably saw enough in the 1st half of the day of the tour but were glad my dad really liked it. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, and it was nice being in a smaller group.

Although we had reserved a tour of Omaha, Sword and the British Airborne, luckily we were the only ones on the scheduled afternoon tour, so we could change the itinerary to include St. Mere Eglise and other WWII sites in the area. I couldn't find a totally American tour on the net, but this change gave us exactly what we wanted.
