Normandy Battlefields Tour - American Sites

Bayeux, France

Visit the American D-Day sites where the greatest amphibious landing in history took place during World War II, on this 9-hour Normandy Battlefields Tour from Bayeux. See famous sites with a guide including Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, the German and American cemeteries, the Airborne Museum of Sainte-Mère-Eglise and much more. Your minivan holds a maximum of eight passengers, and a small-group tour is the perfect way to get to out-of-the-way places in one day.

Begin your tour with a visit to the Sainte-Mère Church and Airborne Museum, the site of a massive airborne operation involving 15,000 U.S. paratroopers during World War II. Hear from your knowledgeable guide how the brave soldiers descended from the skies on the night before D-Day and learn the incredible story of Private John Steele, one of the paratroopers.
Continue onward to Utah Beach, where soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division leapt from their landing crafts and headed inland under the orders of General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. The first day of battle saw relatively few casualties, but the same cannot be said for those that followed.
Visit the German Cemetery, the largest in Normandy dedicated to German casualties of war and the place where over 21,000 fallen soldiers are laid to rest. Spend time at Pointe du Hoc, one of the very largest German coastal batteries. The guns located here rained shells down on Allied soldiers across Omaha and Utah beaches, and the job of silencing them fell to a certain Lt. Col. Rudder and the U.S. Rangers of the 2nd Battalion.
Spend time on Omaha Beach, widely considered the most famous of the D-Day landing beaches. Gain an insight into the challenge faced by the Allied forces landing here under heavy German fire, and take time to consider their extraordinary courage.
The last stop on your tour is the American Cemetery and Visitor Center, the final resting place of 9,387 U.S. soldiers. The cemetery overlooks Omaha Beach and honors soldiers of all ranks in equal measure. Spend time walking among the marked graves and consider this fitting tribute to those who never made it home after World War II.
After nine hours discovering the Normandy battlefields, travel back to Bayeaux where your tour will come to an end.

Our guide, Sunny, was wonderful. She provided great explanations and context, but did not overdo anything and allowed enough time on the stops for personal exploring and reflection. Like many of these tours, I wish I had more time at some stops but, it was still a wonderful, moving experience and I highly recommend the tour. We especially enjoyed the Airborne Museum and could have spent much more time there. Overall, this was just a fantastic tour and seeing the sites outside of history books or movies is something that I wish everyone could do. The scale of the beaches is mind-blowing.

This was a very memorable day trip. We did the small group tour and our guide Matt was amazing! Very knowledgeable and fun. We had a friend that wanted us to put flowers on her Uncle's grave at the American Cemetery and Matt made it happen. Can't thank Matt enough for going above and beyond! Our whole group all 7 of us had an awesome day. I highly recommend the small group tour!

Our Normandy battlefields tour was life changing. It was emotionally overwhelming standing on the beaches where thousands of men sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Our tour guide, Oliver Cricket, was very knowledgeable and did an excellent job of telling the history by intertwining it with individual human stories. We started on time and ended on time and stopped at a gas station for a quick lunch. He got us to the American cemetery in time to see the flags lowered and gave us just enough time at all of the sights on the tour to take in enough to get the highlights. We highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to show honor and respect to the Greatest Generation by visiting where they gave all.

We had an incredible experience. Olivier was a fantastic guide-- he was beyond knowledgeable, enthusiastic and answered all of our questions. Our visit was awe-inspiring and sombering. We appreciate the opportunity and are thankful we took this tour. We cannot recommend it highly enough!

Our tour guide, David, was wonderful. With 20 years of experience, he was knowledgeable, flexible, and did a fabulous job of explaining the history we were seeing in a way that impacted everyone in our group - not just the history buffs. I look forward to recommending this tour to all of my friends and family.

I was fortunate with the choice of tour guide sent to my hotel to pick me up. Since the other part of the reserved tour cancelled it was just me and Adrian, the tour guide in a very comfortable van. The day spent in his company was both enjoyable, informative and interesting. I was able to engage in discussions with him regarding the topics and also was able to spend as much time possible to take plenty of photos. Im sure had there been other members of the tour there still would have been quality time and information given by Adrian.

It was wonderful - a little emotional at the American cemetery for Americans. Great tour guide I think Francois was his name. Highly recommend! Watch a few movies or documentaries before you go to refresh your memory such as The Longest Day. Pick-up went as planned and tour ran just as advertised.

We recently spent 15 days in France-primarily in the Paris area. HOWEVER, the 2 days we spent around Bayeux AND ESPECIALLY at the Normandy D-day beaches were far and away the highlight of our entire 15 day trip! Seeing the German cemetary with 21,000 souls was very humbling. Then to go onward to Utah and Omaha Beaches, St Mere Eglise where many of the paratroopers landed to soften the region in preparation of the sea invasion, and Pont Du Hoc with the German gun emplacements will be things that I will forever carry with me! Anjd if you get David as your tour guide---BONUS!!! David was so knowledgeable, kind, and informative-he is certainly much of what made our tour so forever memorable!

We had a wonderful time and experience on this tour. Francois was a terrific guide and was very enthusiastic and conveying the knowledge he had obtained from studying history. He had a terrific personality and was very easy to interact with. It was a highlight of our time in France and we would do it again in a heartbeat. We are very grateful for meeting him and for seeing this wonderful area of France.

The tour to the Normandy battlefields was excellent. Our guide, Kate, spoke perfect English. Her knowledge about the war and battlefields was exceptional. She started giving us information from the moment we joined the tour. Although the tour last around eight hours, we felt that it just flew by. I would highly recommend Kate to all future travelers.

Having been born after WW2 and being beneficiaries of the bravery and sacrifice of those who lived through that time, this was a most compelling and meaningful tour for my wife and myself. Seeing the sites we only read about before put a face on one of the epic events of the European war. Our tour guide, Carine, was well spoken and had a wealth of information about the area and sites visited. In spite of it being close to a 9 hour tour, locations are spread out and I would have like a bit more time at one or more of the sites as some site visits were a bit rushed. Perhaps one less location or a shorter lunch would address this concern. Nevertheless, this, for me, was the highlight of our trip to France. Tips: Bring warm clothes as it can get blustery in the fall when we were there. And read up about the D Day events, French resistance, etc.

This tour was great -- perfect tour size only 8, our guide was awesome and the tour hit the major sites we wanted to visit. Everything about it... the information, the included lunch, the traveling between sites -- was comfortable and enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour.

Well planned. I have forgotten our driver's name since this is 6 weeks after our tour. He was very knowledgeable. Van was comfortable. I would recommend this tour. We had never visited France before and wanted to see the D-Day landing areas. We stayed in Port en Bessin. Would have been better if we had stayed in Bayeau. But, was only a short drive to train station and parking was free.

Our tour guide, Kate, was wonderful. Articulate, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and a storehouse of information. We enjoyed our visit to the American and German cemeteries, Utah and Omaha beaches, Pont du Hoc, St Mere Eglise and other sites. Well worth the money spent-very emotional and memorable experience. Thanks Kate and Viator!

We have done three Normandy battlefields tours. Two were terrific and the other below average. The terrific ones did not overload us with too much detailed info and understood the amount of time to spend at each place. Came away with awe of what happened here in WW2.

This tour was fabulous and was one of the highlights of our three week visit to France. Our guide, Olivier was friendly and knowledgeable. We liked the fact that we were a small group and we enjoyed the other people in the group. Our lunch stop and food were great. We were very moved by the American Cemetery. Olivier took a lot of time here talking about different grave sites and explaining how the cemetery was planned and cared for by the French people. Thank you for honoring our young soldiers.

I'll admit to going on this tour because it's something my husband really wanted to do, but came away with a great appreciation and understanding of what took place on and off, as the case was the battlefields. Our group of eight was the perfect size to hear the information presented and ask questions and our guide was very personable and knowledgeable. I found it to be an excellent way to put everything you've read and seen into true perspective. Seeing a reenactment on a movie screen is one thing traveling the miles is another completely. We happened to visit Pointe du hoc on the day the planes were practicing for the upcoming D-Day celebration which added another level of reality to the tour. To hear and see five planes on a flyover gave one just a glimpse of what it must have been like to witness a true attack. Truly worth every penny.

This tour was amazing! We could have never understood the complexity of the invasion day without the context that our guide Francois provided. He was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter. It seemed very important,to him that we understand the difficulties of the invasion day and the hardships the soldiers faced not only on that day but in the months to come. He has certainly read and studied a lot of history and it showed. I would highly recommend this tour and especially Francois.

This was one of the highlights of our trip. Matt was incredibly knowledgeable and we appreciated being able to see so much in the full day tour. This is a very sobering experience and the day was capped off with the lower of the American flag and taps being played at the American cemetery. I know I wasn't the only one with tears streaming down my face!

Our guide for both this tour and our Mont St Michel tour was Matthieu. He was the best! His knowledge of the history and some of the tid bits that you'd never get from the books, in addition to his charm and wit, made our day delightful.

Amazing tour! Local French tour-guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. She gave us plenty of time to tour the museums at Sainte Mere and the American cemetery at Omaha Beach. Small group size 5 people was a big plus! Lunch at Le Roosevelt Cafe on Utah Beach used as a German bunker in 1944 was great. Pickup at hotel and drop off at train station went without a flaw. This is the perfect tour of the American WWII experience at Normandy!

Thoroughly enjoyed our Normandy Battlefields tour, especially the museum at Sainte-Mère-Église and the American Cemetery. But the entire day was wonderful. We were picked up at our hotel as planned, and enjoyed a great day together. There were only 5 of us, counting our guide, so it was a very private tour.

We booked an English speaking tour. What wasn't told us at booking or before is that it would be a bi-lingual tour. Much time was wasted with the very competent guide giving his details in word-for-word translation into French for his french speaking guests. We understand their desire for an equally rewarding experience BUT... We feel that an english speaking tour should be given in english and a french speaking tour should be given in french. The guide would have to 'leave us on our own' to speak with the other language guests, in stead of having that amount of time to go into greater detail about whichever site we were visiting. We have seen many other tours in this area with guides going into much detail at several different locations, something we were hoping for. We could have gone to the sites on our tour and gotten an overall view of the particular, on our own. Thanks for the opportunity to tell you our concerns.

This tour was exactly what we wanted when visiting the American sites of Normandy. The 6 person van was perfect size to get detail explanation and personal attention to questions we all had. I was a bit worried at first when I booked a 9 hour tour, but it was well worth the time and money to be able to see everything we saw in a day and experience the vast scale of the Allied operations on D-day and beyond. We say many groups visiting the same sites, but they were in the large tours of 30-40 people and I could see them all straining to hear what the guide was saying, this was not the case for us._br/_ I would highly recommend this to all levels of WWII interest from the novice to highly knowledgeable.

Great tour guide named Phillip. He thoroughly explained all the sites we were visiting. Definitely a must to choose the full-day tour if this is our 1st time to Normandy. Spend you time wisely at the first museum at St. Mire Eglise. That museum was a treasure and a MUST. However, manage your time wisely. We were given an hour to tour the 3 buildings but spent way too much in the 1st one we visited, the Waco museum. Then were rushed in the C-47 museum. Manage your time wisely to give each place ample time. If you're planning on buying souvenirs, buy them at the gift shop at Utah beach. The last beach we visited didn't have a gift shop and we missed our opportunity to buy D-Day items. We also didn't spend a lot of time at the Omaha beach. We very much enjoyed the Pont du Hoc part of the tour, too. LOTS of great information from Phillip and even toured the inside of the german bunkers. Amazing cliff-sides!!

My son and I took the day trip, it was fantastic. Our guide was fun, she was educated on the history, and her local knowledge was second to none. I highly recommend it. My son his a history nut so he would validate all the knowledge and history. She was the perfect blend of talking and quiet when the time is right.

This tour was a wonderful experience. We were picked up on time from our hotel by a very experienced guide/historian Matthew. The day was extremely well organized and we traveled from place to place in comfort. I was not going to book the full day tour and am really glad I did. As Matthew took us to the different locations and shared is vast knowledge with us, we really got the sense of what happened in Normandy. We had the right amount of time to spend at each stop. The tour finished in just the right place for us - at the American Cemetery. I highly recommend this tour - without Matthew we would have missed so much.

A lot of Operation Overlord knowledge was packed into this 9-hours sightseeing trip. Our tour guide, Rose, was wonderful and we were fortunate to have only four in our group the max is eight. We definitely were able to get a small feel for some of the obstacles the landing mission faced on that fateful day of June 6, 1944. I would definitely recommend this excursion.

I would HIGHLY encourage this tour to anyone who wants to use the best of their time in a day to see the American sites, and the German cemetery. Learned so much more than ever would trying to do this on our own.
