Beijing Bike Tour

Beijing, China

Hop on a bike and explore Beijing like a local. Discover the history and charm of Beijing's ancient alleys and laneways known as hutongs. You'll cycle around the winding hutongs behind the Forbidden City and through a local market before stopping for lunch at a community-based NGO.

Get to know Beijing on a bike. This small group bike tour has a maximum of 12 participants, which allows you a more personalized experience as you bike around Beijing. Meet at the Shichahai Metro Station before heading over to the bike shop, where you will be given a full safety briefing and fitted with your bike and helmet.

Cycle your way through the winding streets of Beijing for a glimpse into the ancient heart of the city and a simpler way of life. You'll bike through the hutongs, unchanged over time, but rapidly being squeezed out of the city through development. Experience centuries of daily life as you bike along the moat of the forbidden city and through Beijing's ancient laneways.

Sit down to lunch at a community-based NGO. Learn about the work they do with the physically and mentally challenged before hopping back onto your bikes and continuing through the hutongs until you reach your final destination at the Drum Tower.

I enjoyed this bike trip in March of 2018. My guide spoke excellent English and was very friendly. I ended up being the only one booked on the tour this day so I had a private tour. Beijing is bike friendly city so with the exception of one road we were always on bike paths or safely on the shoulder. A couple of items to note: First, if your looking for a high end bike this is not the tour for you. Your bike will be an old rust bucket that you pick up in a rustic Hutong alleyway... The good news is that it will be a fully functional rust bucket. Second, if your counting on a helmet for safety I didn't see any so you may have to risk or bring your own. The good news is this a great tour of sites in the city and lunch was in a rustic Hutong Alley restaurant that was excellent. My guide also arranged to have someone visit our lunch table to show me crickets and explain ancient Chinese cricket fighting. From lunch my guide was kind enough to take me to the park overlooking the Forbiden city to go to a tea house to sample and learn about Chinese tea and tea drinking. A word of warning - the tea sampling is free but you feel the squeeze to buy something when all is said and done so bring you wallet.
