Beijing Day Trip of Mutianyu Great Wall and Ming Tombs by Bus

Beijing, China

This 9-hour guided tour involves the two most attractive sites in Beijing, the Mutianyu Great Wall and the Ming Tombs. The Great Wall is a breathtaking sight and an awesome experience. It’s a challenging hike from the valley floor to the top rampart, but the reward is a spectacular view of the wall snaking for miles over mountainous terrain. Visit the Mutianyu section of the wall to avoid the crowds. For the tomb, you will have the chance to visit the underground palace of Dingling, the only tomb that has been excavated among the thirteen Ming Dynasty imperial tombs.

Guests will be picked up from their hotels between 7am and 8am. Then, drive to the Ming Tombs (Dingling), the best-preserved Chinese imperial tombs with 500 years history. Dingling is the underground mausoleum of Emperor Wan Li. The Underground Palace Halls, a labyrinth palace building, were the first royal tomb excavated in accordance with plan in China. Enjoy sightseeing on Ming Tombs for 2 hours.

End the visit of Ming Tombs at about 11am, before having traditional Chinese lunch at approx 11:30am. Travelers will have 45 minutes to enjoy a short visit of Jade Carving Factory. The jade carving is very famous special local product, it was not only the excellent skill on carving, but also mixes many Chinese traditional cultures in the jade carving.

After lunch, drive to Mutianyu Great Wall. Mutianyu Great Wall is known for its beautiful surroundings of dense woods and rich pastures changing colors with the seasons of a year. Mutianyu Great Wall is located in Huai Rou County on the north-east of Beijing. This section of the Great Wall is about 46 miles (75km) from the center of Beijing. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, Mutianyu section of Great Wall used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs. If you want to reach the highest point, cable car is a good choice (optional, at own expense).

You are returned to the downtown Beijing, you will have a chance to enjoy the Chinese traditional Tea Ceremony. After the tour, prepare to be transferred back to your hotel around 6:00pm.

Tour was okay but the guide made it worst. Ming tomb was not really worth it as we walk like 10mins up the slope and down the 6 or 7 floor of steps but was there only for 2mins.. The guide did not even explain anything inside and we were like rushing to follow him out of it. Great wall was nice because of the view and of cos without the guide. Worst of all, on our way back, guide got off the bus before us and leave the driver to send us back whom drop us 500m away from the original pick up location. The worst tour i joined from Viator.

An amazing experience to visit the tomb of a Ming Emperor and then head to the Great Wall of China. One tip, if busy, skip the cable car and walk to the top. It's a better experience and results in far greater time on the wall itself instead of waiting in the cable car queue.

Really deep insight into Chinese culture. Jade carving factory was announced as tour but was more like "buy anything you see here". Ming tombs haven't been too spectacular either to me. Great wall was very impressive though!! Tea tasting at the end was interesting. Nice and competent guide!

A very enjoyable day trip out to Mutianyu and Ming Tombs. Obviously time is limited in both locations probably enough at Mutianyu, especially as it was baking hot, but we did miss the animal sculptures at Ming Tombs and it felt a little rushed. We were lucky to go as a small group 5 plus guide, so it felt like a relaxed trip, with a good driver. The mini bus was comfortable, and a/c helped in the hot weather. A few things I would change to improve the tour a little... spend a little more time at Ming tombs, and maybe not worry so much about including the 'extras' i.e. visit to jade factory and a tea ceremony, both interesting, but took away valuable time for the main events. Mutianyu is spectacular, and less busy than some sections of the Great Wall you can also get picture postcard images! Be prepared for some strenuous walking.

The slide back down from the Great Wall was the bomb. The only thing I commented on was the guides speech. His English was good but he spoke so fast! Otherwise great trip!

It was a dream come true to finally see the Great Wall of China! Such a wonderful place! The Ming tombs were actually kind of nice too, specially with our guide explanations. Terrific day!

Thanks for an interesting trip! Our group was friendly, and the guide Mr.Li was very helpful. Representative of company and guide connected me before trip to be sure I am here and to tell me the time of a bus pick up. We had enough time to make pics and rest. And lunch was tasty! I recommend!

The Wall itself is amazing, but you didn't need to know that. Basically, the jade factory was a shopping stop in disguise, and I wouldn't recommend visiting the Ming Tombs if you don't have time to spare. We wasted most of the day in all that, and by the time we got to Mutianyu, we only had close to an hour to enjoy this Wonder of the World, which felt quite short and left us wanting a lot more. The guide wanted to return quickly to avoid the traffic, and we also had another scheduled stop at a tea shop, which wasn't really special in my opinion. If you want to experience the Wall, find a tour that goes straight to Mutianyu the best section, even if it gets a little crowded and spend a minmum of 2-3 hours up there.

Principally the tour was OK. As expected, there are several stops, where someone, who wants to see the main things great wall, tombs, ... of the tour, looses time. This includes Jade carving factory, tea ceremony and similar things. The lunch was surprisingly good and the tour guide as well as the driver really fine. Finally the sky cleared completely up having the great wall with deep blue sky ... so, the tour is recommended anyway.

This tour went exactly according to the description. The guide, Jackson spoke English well and provided a lot of interesting information. He was also able to answer all our additional questions. The obligatory 'shopping stops' were interesting and added value tot he experience, especially the tea ceremony, and salespeople were not aggressive. This tour was very good value for money. The only negative was that our ride was 25 minutes late to pick us up in the morning, and it was quite cold to wait outside for that long.

I really enjoyed the Great Wall and Ming Tombs but we seemed to spend almost as much time at the forced sales stops. Our first stop was to a jade showroom which was for 90 minutes! Several of us were just sat around having a drink. At the end of the day when everyone was tired after the Great Wall and just wanted to get back, we stopped at a tea shop and there was a tea ceremony which lasted about half an hour. Several of us don't drink tea and the tour guide told us we still had to go in! They locked the bus so we couldn't stay on it. When we came out the tea room, the job had so many assistants that they followed us around one by one and it was so hard to escape!

I had a great experience and based on what other people say about similar tours, everything is about expectations. We were taken to two sales pitches jade factory and tea house, but that is completely understandable as the tour price is so cheap that they have to bring people to this places. No push to buy anything even when I did and the experience was great. Paul our tour guy was super friendly and knew all the facts. We spend almost two hours at the wall and it was more than enough. If you feel like walking the wall from one end to the other, then certainly you need a different tour. The five of us in this tour had more than enough time so everybody was happy.

Great tour! Got to also see a jade factory more like a showroom, and have a tea ceremony. We only had an hour on the wall, allowing 30 minutes to get to the top and 30 to come down, but that was enough because it was so hot. The tour guide was great too, very knowledgeable and funny. I recommend it!

Great tour! Well organized and managed. Save driver (not necessarily usual in China...) and knowledgeable and nice tour guide. Yes, we had two shopping stops, but they were actually quite interesting and I felt no pressure to spend money. This tour is worth the money.

Liked the tour. Guide was not as personable and English was not great. Also, drop the stops at the jade factory at the end of the day. People were tired and wanted to get back to hotel. Understand this is a business arrangement, but needs to be dropped from the itinerary.

Great tour. Beware there is a forced shopping stop at a tea shop. The tasting is interesting, but the teas are overpriced.

This was a great way to see the wall and I highly recommend taking the ski lift up and the toboggan down - this was the highlight of our trip to China and I don't feel this was recommended enough by our tour guide. Most people took the cable car up and down, and were all very jealous when we told them about the toboggan! It's worth mentioning the long drive to this part of the wall from the centre of China, but it was definitely worth it as this part was less crowded.
