Full Day Mutianyu Great Wall Hiking Tour by bus

Spend an unforgettable day at China's must-see destination: The Great Wall of China, and explore a less-frequented section of the Wall at Mutianyu. Test your legs as you approach the Wall on foot, like a Mongolian raider. Be prepared for spectacular views of the Wall across mountain ranges. While walking to the top rampart from the valley floor may seem tiring, your efforts will be rewarded with majestic views of the ancient Wall, slithering over miles of mountainous terrain.
Your friendly English-speaking guide will pick you up at your hotel lobby between 6:00 am and 8:30 am depending on other customer’s hotel pick-up. The exact time will be informed by your guide a day before the tour starts, normally after 6:00 pm, by a phone call to your hotel.
You will drive to Great Wall, the longest piece of architecture in the world stretching from China’s east coast to China’s west desert, and used as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs. You will arrive at around 9:30 am to the section called Mutianyu, 75 km away from Beijing. This section was built around 1368, and it is known for its beautiful surroundings like dense woods and rich pastures changing colors with the seasons of a year.
You can hike up the side of mountain to the wall or take a cable car (own expense). Then you can walk over the wall passing several watch towers for different views. A round trip hike is about 6 km and takes about 3 hours. On the way down, you can either walk, or take the cable car or toboggan (own expense).
Once the hiking tour is finished around 1:30 pm, you will enjoy a traditional Chinese cuisine lunch and then be transferred back to your downtown hotel in Beijing.
This is a great tour for the price and if you are someone that wants to just go off and explore the Great Wall without getting all of the history tid-bits along the way. I liked that it was a no-nonsense tour that only stopped for the restroom on the way up and got you to the wall long enough for you to be able to explore for 3.5 hours or so. If you are a history buff and want to know everything there is to know then maybe dont take this tour, or study up beforehand : Also, lunch was delicious!

Highly recommended for the solo business traveller with limited sightseeing time, and who does not wish to be conscripted into compulsory tours of crafts factories or shopping outlets. Home-style cooking with shared platters was a welcome and refreshing change from the more fast-food like lunch options we saw other tour groups taking at the same location. A bonus at the end of the tour was when our tour bus got snarled in traffic on the way into Beijing, the tour guides hailed a taxi for me, instructed the taxi driver to take me to my hotel and gave me cash to pay the driver when we got there. Great service - oh, and the Great Wall at Mutianyu was a not-to-be-missed experience in and of itself.

I was traveling solo after a business trip to HK, and decided to make it to Beijing to see the Great Wall. As private tours to Mutianyu were pricing at 155 and up, I decided to save about 90 by taking a group tour to the Great Wall.
