Old Beijing Folk Life Experience: Hutong Bike Tour

Beijing, China

It's easy to see a touristic Hutong in Beijing; otherwise it might not be so easy to experience the real folk life in Hutong resided by local Beijingers. Away from the crowds and tourists, touch the real Hutong life of local Beijingers. Get the excitement you deserve. Not to worry about being lost in the maze-like Hutongs. This tour make your Beijing Hutong Dream come true.

In this tour you won't be taken to the popular and touristic Hutongs. Instead, you'll see the real local life of the native people nowadays. The Hutongs chosen for this tour are the most characteristic ones and you could never find by yourself if you have no guide.

There you’ll see the real life of people: how the housewives shop in the morning, taking care of babies in front of their doors, and the aged people enjoying the sunlight and morning exercises...

You’ll pass through the narrowest Hutong (Daowan Hutong) whose narrowest part is only two-arm-long wide and has nine turnings.

You'll pass by the Memorial Hall of Mr. Lao She (one of the most famous writers in 20th century) as well and take a look inside the courtyard and how the room was furnished exactly as 50 years ago.

There is no better place than Wangfujing Food Street to know the traditional food and snacks in Beijing. You’ll have plenty of time there t enjoy the sight.

A bird's eye view of the famous Forbidden City of Beijing on the top of the hill in Jingshan Park is the climax of this tour.

The experience was ok but not great. Booking, schedule, bike, etc was everything on time and according to the add and staff was friendly. My tour guide was also freindly but he was kind of silent, he answered every question with detail but I had to ask, otherwise he would barely say anything. As this was not my first time in Beijing I guess I was not that impressed but at least this helped me to realize how easy is to rent a bike by yourself and explore the city.

This was truly a highlight. Tour guide Jerry was excellent - very knowledgeable, accomodating. It was informative, culturally enriching and while I could have biked it myself, it's far more confusing and wouldn't have been able to hone in on the landmarks as well. The stops were delightful as well - a must see view is the one from the top of Jinshaling Park. Highly recommend it - a unique perspective of a long standing rich part of the culture that is undergoing a transformation.

Our guide was really great and friendly. Not sure about his name, but I think his name is Jerry. He brought us cycling in small and quite street. Additionally, he has a broad knowledge about the history of China. You will get difference experince than joining normal trip to common touristic places.

Good fun!! This was a good way to spend the morning, a different way to see the sights. The pace we perfect so we could actually enjoy the sights. Our guide was knowledgeable and was able to give us a lot of information as well as answer our questions. One negative point was that the guide did not provide helmets, which I was not too happy about for our 10 year old child.

I absolutely loved my hutong bike tour! I was fortunate enough to have the tour all to myself and my guide was super informative and helpful. I had already seen some of the things on the tour and my guide was able to adjust the route so that I could see some new and exciting things.

I was the guides only participant, which was a good thing. Especially crossing some of the major streets. Guide didn't talk much or give information. Not sure we hit all the locations mentioned in description, but did spend 1.25 hours of tour in the National Art Museum. Maybe this was due to the heat! Bikes were in good working order.

This was on of the highlights of our trip. It was an amazing day. Zach provided excellent directions to the meeting point in advance. Gerry our guide was brilliant taking us around the Hutongs, the art gallery and the park with a fantastic view of the forbidden city. A and #34;must-do and #34; activity in Beijing

I loved seeing this part of Beijing by bike. I was lucky enough to have been the only client on the tour and found the guide very interesting. It can be a bit hair-raising at times as you do have to ride along some big streets to get from one area to the next. It was well worth it though.

The tour was fun. It would have been better if we were given more information about the Hutong though.

I found the location very easily as comprehensive instructions were provided which was extremely useful. The folks at the Downtown Backpackers were very friendly and welcoming. I was introduced to my fellow companions for the tour and allocated a bicycle which was a very comfortable upright bike. We proceeded to cycle through the Hutongs which was very busy and interesting. We stopped along the way to be shown various things and told various information about the Chinese way of life. I visited the Art Museum which exhibited some beautiful calligraphy work and sculptures, however my tour groups could not get into the Museum as they did not have their passports with them which was a requirement on entry. Following the museum tour we cycled back around the Forbidden Palace and went to a park where we could clearly see the central line of all the palaces which ran along the middle of Beijing. We stopped for lunch at Mr. Sui's Dumplings and tried a variety of steamed and fried dumplings which were delicious. We ended our tour back at the backpackers and said our goodbyes. I would fully recommend this tour as it was a great way to meet people and to see the Chinese Way of life in greater detail.

Our guide was Jerry. He speaks reasonably good English, which is a such a welcoming change after encountering difficulties with the locals including hotel front desk for many days.
