Berlin's Infamous Third Reich Sites Half-Day Walking Tour

Berlin, Germany

Gain insight into Berlin's Nazi past on this 4-hour walking tour of the infamous Third Reich sites. Accompanied by a historian guide, walk to the ruins of Anhalter Bahnhof, used to deport prisoners to concentrations camps, and see the former Gestapo and SS headquarters and the site of Hitler's bunker. Learn about those who struggled against the Nazi system of terror, and get a fuller, deeper look at the haunting realities of the Holocaust. Your tour will finish before the German parliament building, the Reichstag.

Meet your guide at the Hackescher Markt train station to begin your 4-hour walking tour of Berlin's Third Reich sites. Delve into the history of Hitler and the National Socialist Party with your historian guide and learn about the reign of terror that took hold of Germany from 1933 to 1945, considered the country's darkest period.

Discover how the Nazis systematically destroyed Berlin’s Jewish community; once one of the most thriving in Europe. Walk first to the ruins of Anhalter Bahnhof, previously Europe’s largest train station where many of Berlin's Jewish residents were deported. Then head to the former headquarters of Heinrich Himmler’s SS and the Gestapo. Pass the Topography of Terror museum before making your way to Herman Göring’s sprawling Ministry of Aviation.

After four hours of in-depth Third Reich history, your tour will conclude at the Reichstag, the German parliament building.

We had an amazing tour. Nathan was very knowledgeable and provided a great understanding of all the events that happened before, during and after the War. Highly recommend this. In fact I believe it to be a must! Great Job Nathan. Thank you.

The trip was as advertised and hence no complaints. No fault of the organisers but subtracting from the overall experience hence the 4 stars is the absence of the actual sites being referred to. Obviously, they have all been razed and not a single item remains from that gory past. So everything has to be imagined the way it was, from the words of the guide. Here, the role of Jonathan, our guide, has to be highlighted. He was excellent as he had very good knowledge of the tour and added many tidbits of his own, connecting elements from the past with today, asking us all to feel rather than just see. That was pretty unique because you then really pay attention to some of the details that you would surely have missed. It is his super effort that really raises the tour to 4 star levels. _br/_ Its good for those that are largely ignorant of that sad period but for those who have been following this since long like I have been, the content was a bit short. Maybe they should have a Third Reich Advanced tour!!_br/_ But like I said earlier, no complaints and rate this tour well enough for anyone to take it.

Really knowledgeable guide, covered a lot of social history that I wasn't taught in school, so learnt a lot. The 4 hours walking wasn't hard, the pace was gentle, with plenty of stops to discuss places of interest. The stop at the cafe for a drink was very crowded, so we popped around the corner to get faster service and a seat. Highly recommended.

The tour was terrific but not exclusively to sites attributable to the _br/_ Third Reich. I don't know if that was by design or not but it worked out fine. We looked at Berlin from 3 periods: the Old City, the Communist period and the Nazi period. All the major sites were covered in detail. Our guide Barnaby was a native Brit from London but knew Berlin like he'd lived there his whole life. His wit and humor made the 4 hours fly by.

Our guide was a PHD research candidate on the Nazi civil service. His insights about the way that ordinary people lived and the evolution of the holocaust were extremely interesting. This was more a tour of the insidious nature of Nazism and how it destroyed Europe and killed tens of millions than just a visit to Nazi sites in Berlin. While our guide did not draw parallels to the political climate today they were apparent in the narrative the guide provided on how the Nazis came to power and prosecuted their reign of hate, murder and terror. I came away with a chilling reminder of just how fragile tolerance and openness are in our modern world.

An interesting tour and a good insight into Berlin and Germany post WW1. An easy walk over 4 hours which included a lunch/rest break. A shame that some of the sites are no longer in existence but this is entirely understandable . It is appropriate that Hitler's bunker complex is now something as ordinary as a car park ._br/_ Our guide was knowledgeable of both the subject and Berlin in general._br/_ I recommend this half day tour to all adults. Many lessons can be learnt from past mistakes and inaction by the general populace.

This was an absolutely amazing tour! Nathan was very knowledgeable and kept things interesting. This tour easily could have been incredibly depressing but Nathan managed to convey the seriousness of the history without making it the world's most depressing tour. We absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it to both history buffs and history newbies.

The tour, conducted by Cezar, was outstanding. All four hours were riveting. The tour successfully conveyed a huge amount of fascinating information and placed the information in historic and geographic perspective. It illuminated the extreme historical importance of Berlin.

Mr. Lustgarten was extremely passionate about his subject matter. He was friendly and open to questions. He had analyzed how propaganda helped the Nazis take absolute power over the nation and all that he said was thought provoking rather than just lots of material that is too quickly forgotten. Fortunately we did not stop for long periods of time, and we did not take extensive breaks which other guides often do. How fortunate the company is to have such a highly-educated person who wants to share his knowledge.

Wow just wow! Awesome tour. The commentary was paced perfectly. The guides knowledge was brilliant, he held everyone's interest even our least interested 13 year old who's now converted to the benefits of learning history. Throughout the walk there was another member of the party throwing, potentially inflammatory, questions at the guide who dealt with them brilliantly. Our 15 and 16 year old history buffs were captivated and disappointed that they couldn't find fault with the information being imparted! Would really recommend the tour.

A well run tour of a dark part of Germany's history. The tour leader was first class and helped make the history come to life. A well recommended tour.

This was a good compliment to the general walking tour of Berlin. It covered a number of interesting sights and was deep into the details of the history. We had a very large group of over 30 and that was hard for our guide to manage. Also, this tour did not cover some of the Third Reich sites that were covered in the general walking tour such as the library where the Nazi's burned books. For a complete picture, take both tours.

The best walking tour my partner and I have ever done!! Our guide Mort, did a terrific job leading and informing us of the highlites of Hitler's Germany, Berlin in the Third Reich and WWII. He added a lot of personal stories and insight into the lives of the people that lived in Berlin and those that ruled leading up to and including the war. It was a walk through a time in history that is shameful and should not be forgotten or repeated. This tour is a learning experience that all should do. _br/_ Thank you Mort!

This is an excellent tour and an amazing guide! Ken is irish and his gift for storytelling is put to great use in his current role as tour guide. He is also a serious student of WW2 and provides explanations to set the stage for what we are to see. He established the context for the tour which helped me as I was not as well-versed as some on the tour. We walked for a long time...seeing all of the important sites several of which we went back to visit the next ie documentation center with amazing amount of information!. I was also very happy we visited the Jewish memorial and Ken did a great job of translating the Symbolism which I would have missed much of which I will never forget. We had a nice stop at a local place for a quick drink / snack. The tour ended at the Reichstag which we visited on our own the next day. not part of the tour...but want to mention the restaurant on top of the Reichstag is excellent! need reservation_br/_ Ken is wonderful! great personality, lots of enthusiasm and solid academic background to instruct and answer questions. Not to worry if you are not an expert on the subject....I began with very little background and felt I learned a lot. Subsequent tours in Nuremburg and Munich added to this first tour and all combined left me with a good education about the war.

Excellent tour with an excellent and knowledgeable guide (Jess). Obviously quite sobering at times with visits to memorials for victims of the Nazis but overall felt like it was taking a step back in history. Definitely recommend, even in the freezing temperatures!
