Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Walking Tour

Berlin, Germany

Head north of Berlin for a tour into the past at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, one of the main concentration camps in Nazi Germany. While you explore the memorial site with a guide, you'll learn the history of the camp and those imprisoned here, providing an essential background to Germany's past and present.

While the Nazis were hosting the 1936 Olympic games, slave laborers were being forced to build a huge concentration camp just north of Berlin, intended to hold political 'enemies' of the Nazi regime political, racial and 'asocial'. Of the 200,000 people interned, more than 50,000 lost their lives before the camp was liberated by the Soviets in 1945.

The camp was then used by the Soviets until 1950 to detain former Nazis, German soldiers and political opponents of the communists. Many thousands more died from malnutrition and disease.

The key to this walking tour is the informative and illuminating narrative provided by your expert tour guide. During your 3-hour visit to the camp, you'll learn important background history of the site as you walk through the Appellplatz parade ground, the Jewish Barrack, punishment cells, execution grounds and crematorium, Station Z, the Pathology Laboratory and camp hospital.

This tour was researched by historian Gabriel Fawcett, who is publishing an important witness account of the camp. All tour guides have their own special insights into the history of Sachsenhausen, and are experienced in unraveling the complex history of the Third Reich and the Holocaust.

I highly recommend this tour, especially if you can get tour guide DAVID to lead you around the site. He made my recent visit something I will never forget. He was very well informed and perfectly handled the difficult and sensitive issues of such an emotional experience. There is a lot of walking out in the open areas of the camp, so if you go in summer, bring an umbrella for some shade! M. Carpenter Houston, Texas

I did this tour with my mother in December 2017. Our guide was a girl called Beth - a welsh girl who now lives in Berlin. An excellent tour - informative and memorable. The guide's knowledge was amazing and very easy to understand. On the train back to Berlin, Beth took the time to check with all of us where we were going to - and advised us of train connections etc. I would highly recommend this trip.

Incredible experience. Highly recommend that everyone take the time to open your eyes to this devastating period in our world's history. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, helpful providing us his umbrella when it started drizzling, getting us hot chocolate so we had more time to explore rather than waiting in line in the café, etc., and overall amazing!

This was a great way to see Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and explained the history of the camp. While you can also visit the camp independently and hire headsets, it was useful to have a guide to answer any questions you might have. Highly recommended tour if you are visiting Berlin!

A group of 6 of us went on this tour led by Ryan in September 2017. There is quite a bit of walking to the site once you get off the train, so I would recommend wearing comfortable clothes. The tour itself was very informative, Ryan knew a lot about the history of the town and the camp. My husband and I had been to Dachau a few years before, but the others in our group had never visited a concentration camp and it was a sobering experience for all of us. Even months after our trip, the family is still talking about how moving a visit it was.

Although it was quite a drive from where we were, the tour was great. The guide tried not to be biased in his opinion of what really happened at the camp. It made it even more apparent the real agenda. It was informative. It was a horrible time to go, very cold. But the tour guide gave us options to get out of the cold as possible. All in all a good tour for what we were looking to do.

Unfortunately the day we booked our tour was the day after Berlin experienced a storm which disrupted the trains and we could get to the camp. The reason I give 5 stars is the way the tour company handled it. Caesar, our guide, took us on a brilliant walking tour instead. Great tour company!

Another really worthwhile excursion in Berlin. You get a trip out through the beautiful countryside by train before walking out to the camp. It is a reasonably long walk from the station at least 20mins, so wear appropriate shoes and you'll be walking pretty much non-stop around the camp. Our guide was really well-informed and ensured we got to see everything. Very, very moving. No question was too challenging. Remember to take your lunch and water - there's no food or drink options at the camp and very few at the meeting place so organise something before you get there. Highly recommended tour.

Interesting trip with the train ride and walk to the museum hidden within a housing estate._br/_ Having been to Auschwitz the year before this was similar but not as atmospheric. Still a good place to visit with great history of how people were treated.

Our tour guide Ceaser was very good! he gave very good information about the history of this place and some general history. The tour is around 6 hours and you need to take a backpack with some snacks or lunch in it as there isnt anywhere to stop. But lots of walking and youll also need to purchase a train ticket as this camp is out of town abit but you all catch the train as a group.

We had the trip with Sarah, and we could really tell how knowledgeable she was when telling the story about Sachsenhausen. She also takes care of guiding the whole group through the site and then getting us safe to Berlin. I would definitely recommend it! Thank you Sarah!

She was a very fast walker and for being shape we could barely keep up with her. She was very knowledgeable but we felt that she lacked the passion in her job. Considering the sensitivity of the tour, we felt she wasn't very empathetic even though she did warn us on this.

We decided that this was such an important historical chapter in the history of Germany that visiting it was a must. The solemn nature of such a site is not for everyone, and certainly not for young children. The tour takes you on the same route a prisoner would have traveled. Extremely interesting.

BETH GRIFFINS was as INCREDIBLE, knowledgeable and lovely tour guide. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the walking tour. It is doable by any age group we had a mix group of 15 people from age group 20 age 70. We all coped fine! Extremely insightful, intriguing, and educational tour the tour was given in an exciting, interesting, unique and gripping manner by our wonderful guide Beth. Extremely well spoken girl, has a very field related degree from a reputable UK university and also doing further studies in a linked subject presently, i.e. the perfect person to give us this tour!! Worth every penny. Great story teller, spoke loud enough to ensure every single person in the group could hear, kept us all gripped and well informed throughout the tour. answered all our questions due to her in depth knowledge of German history! Tour given respectfully and at a good pace, gave us plenty of information without bombarding us with boring mundane information. On the way back made sure we all knew which station or stop were getting off at, chatted to us personally many times and took care of the entire group. I highly recommend this tour and you will be extremely fortunate if you get BETH GRIFFINS as your tour guide. You must book this tour to learn about the reality of what happened during that time. Highly recommended tour, 5

This tour was a real eye opener. As grim as it is seeing a concentration camp I am so glad that I did. Our guide, Philippa was very knowledgable and kind. She had answers to all our questions and made the whole experience more real. You get to see and go in mostly all of the buildings that are still standing. Will never forget this tour.

Our guide, Darren, was extremely knowledgable as he was doing a PH.D.on the role of the civil service in the National Socialism and we were benefitted greatly from his expertise. The tour was very interesting but unfortunately the time frame allowed did not permit us to look as much as we would have liked at some of the displays at the camp site. This perhaps could be alleviated if guides were provided with maps from the camp back to the train station and train timetables to Berlin so that those who would like to stay longer could do so. Apart from that the tour was excellent.

Wow this too was insightful knowledgeable and also very sad. The tour guide was very impressive with her knowledge but also incredibly insightful showing us many of the areas of the concentration camp that opened up the thoughts of all participating in the tour. And amazing tour and well worth spending the money to walk through for the day.

This tour doesn't hold back the image of the terrible things the Nazis did to PoW's and Jews, glad they teach all German school children what happened at these camps during WW-ll

Darren was fantastic. He's getting his PhD and basing his thesis on Third Reich civil servant, which really made his extensive knowledge of everything that happened at Sachsenhausen that much more impressive.

This was an amazing tour, It brings out all emotions and affects you for days but is something to be experienced. So much learned and our guide was great. Hail and heavy rain hit our train on the journey out, giving some indication of the freezing weather we had, and yet it seemed nothing once we learned of the conditions the prisoners endured daily. Take an umbrella and warm clothing if visiting in the cold weather as there is only a few places that have you under shelter, and the tour must go on. Definitely recommended.
