Bilbao City Hop-on Hop-off Tour

Bilbao, Spain

Look at Bilbao from a different point of view. Hop on a double-decker bus and discover the highlights of the city.

The precise origins of Bilbao have not been determined. However, a settlement had already been established and had significantly developed on both banks of the "ria del Nervion" before it officially became a villa. It was Don Diego Lopez de Haro V, lord of Vizcaya, who gave the city his title in the year 1300, due to its great importance as a commercial and maritime center at the time.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Bilbao was the great economic icon of the Basque Country and amongst the most important cities in the State. The city is now undergoing a new physical transformation, becoming more and more appealing to visitors.

You will be able to travel to The Guggenheim Museum, the Euskalduna Palace, a conference and music center, the plaza Ensanche, the Jardines de albia and San Vicente Church, the Abando area and the commercial center Zubiarte, the Gran Via, the Corte Ingles, the church of the Sagrado Corazon, The Arriquibar square, the Casa Alhondiga, Indautxu aera, the Bizkaia square, the commercial area, the Moyua square, the Bellas artes museum, the Dona Casilda Park, the Sagrado Corazon square, the University of Deusto and all the main buildings that represent the transformed image of this city.

We had a wonderful time in Bilbao. The hotel was located close to the railway station and the metro and also to the Guggenheim. So most of the interesting spots were around us. Dont miss the Guggenheim. It is a great place and a must._br/_ We also take a tour to San Sebastian, using the Bus from the Bus terminal. _br/_ In both cities we take the Hop on Hop off Bus to get an overview first and than walk around._br/_ We take the Mercury Hotel for 7 days, nice and friendly staff_br/_ At the arrival we take a taxi to the hotel. When we go back, we take the airport shuttle bus, for just 1,45 each. Very cheap.

The full circle of the tour takes about an hour. The information on the tour is good - it's recorded rather than a live guide and is in English, Spanish and French. It would be better if the bus waited at the stops until the advertised time - we missed it by seconds after running for it to return to the start, certain the driver would have seen us but still drove off.

Great way to see the city sites and decide where to hop off.

Bilbao Hop-On Hop-Off was excellent and traversed much of the city and sights. Tour audio/commentary was very good and clear. Really enjoyed this hour-long tour. Only drawback was that the tour runs only once an hour--with only one bus in the system, so we did not get off and instead rode through the route and got off where we started at the Guggenheim.

As always an excellent way to see a city. You see more from the top deck and get all the information about the city so you can then decide which sights you want to go back to. We did 2 full circuits so used it as a way to get around as well. The lady driver was very steady and made the trip a pleasant experience.

Do not recommend this at all, old buses and not a friendly driver

Review by:   PETER F,    July 2016 Review: 3 star rating: Worth doing
Route included items of little interest to tourists - e.g. railway station and immediate environment_br/_ there were also quite a number of stops which took a long time - presumably because of pick-ups._br/_ Is there a way of speeding this up e.g. better cash/money handling by the driver?. Sound equipment_br/_ was poor - buttons for volume control did not work well and earplugs were very uncomfortable!

Tour was worth it for a city orientation. We stayed on the bus for the hour and didn't use the on/off option._br/_ The bus was old and rather uncomfortable. You had to listen to the site explanations in three languages, which was rather tedious. The same tour bus in San Sebastian was more advance and provide head sets so you could select the language you wanted.

Review by:   Deborah D,    April 2016 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Dissapointing tour. Commentary was in three languages, so it was tiring to wait for my language English to came on each time. The commentary did not match the sites we were seeing for the first half of the trip. Bus was not particularly well kept.

Just a single bus operates this service, so schedules can be delayed during the day, depending on traffic conditions. Frequency, therefore, can also be a problem. The tour itself is around one hour long and is a comprehensive tour of Bilbao old town and environs with stunning views of the Guggenheim Museum. Highly recommended.

Nice and comfortable way to see the sights of Bilbao and decide on which sights to visit. Friendly staff - really enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the tour bus. I thought it was very educational and it told me a lot of really cool places to visit. I basically sat on the bus for the entire loop around the city to get background info and then I used it for one of the stops. These buses are great for getting to know the city!

this was a nice tour that went around the most important parts of the city, the arquitecture is beautiful, is a big city so is worth taking this tour, they were not as regular as they should had been , which made us waste too much time waiting for the buses

Excellent expierence and well organized despite the fact that part of the tour was changed due to the fiesta in the city

Good route and lovely driver. Only complaint is the regularity of the bus and no signs for the pickup points.

The first tour started later in the morning which we didn't expect. This gave us less time to visit the places we wished to see.

A reasonably good tour for the price 12 to 14 e. Bus runs a 1 hour circuit and has a good bilingual commentary. Not really HOHO because of the 1 hour wait between buses. should add buses to cut interval to 30 or 40 minutes.

We enjoyed the ride. We were impressed by the city. We were lucky to catch the bus just before it was departing, since the bus only goes once an hour

Good sights and description on Bilbao history. The sad thing is that the description was not in sync with item described. Neither were any of the stops called out. When the bus stopped, the name of the stop and what was there should have been told by the driver. Ride took 1 hour-would have a longer ride with more sights.

Bilbao is a relatively new tourism destination since the opening of the Guggenheim so this tour gives a great overview of the city in a relatively short period of time. It's concise and interesting. There aren't very many actual buses doing the circuit, so plan your tour time.

On time for pick up but we found it very difficult to follow the narration and/or the bus travel and narration did not match so identifying specific buildings was often not possible. The hop on hop off in other cities has been a true bonus to our city visit but not so here.

Good tour but the bus used is showing signs of wear. Also a bus every 30 minutes would be helpful. 11.00 is too late for a first departure.

Always book this bus when we tour a new city. A great overview of what to look for.Beautiful city and enjoyed the commentary. The down time in mid afternoon is always difficult for North Americans.

A great way to see the main sights of a city. The driver stopped, when it rained, to slide the roof across, and then again, when the sun shone, to open it again. Therefore, we stayed dry and enjoyed fresh air ans sunshine, whilst viewing a very nice city.

Arrived in Lisbon on the Ruby Princess and the Hop on bus was already at the port as we docked. Very easy access and great tour routes on both the red and blue lines. Only problem was Lisbon traffic which turned the red tour into 2.5 hours. Be prepared for traffic and bring sun screen!

This was more like a bus tour than a true hop-on hop-off bus. There was only one bus so if you got off, you had to wait an hour for it to return. Also, in other countries, they give you an ear phone for your language which was better than having to listen to the announcement in 3 different languages. Because of this, you didn't get as in depth commentary. Still, it did give a nice overview of the city.

OMG - the stops were SO hard to find and identify. Luckily we managed to spot the building in the background of the official photo otherwise we would have wasted our money.

An excellent tour round a lovely city. The bus driver was most helpful. Fortunately one of the bus stops was close to our hotel so we were able to use it as our form of transport across the city. Highly recommended!

As we were only in the city for a short time this tour gave us a comprehensive look at the city, All points of interest were shown to us and many historical facts given to us._br/_ At the end of the tour we felt a flavour of Bilboa had been given to us and we would like to return for a longer spell to explore the city in more detail.

We toured the Guggenheim Museum in the morning; hence, we only had the afternoon to take the hop on hop off bus. That was a big mistake. We wish we had spent more time with the bus route. It was very informational and convenient, and there were nice views from the bus. We will definitely do this again if we ever go back to Bilbao!

We went to the first stop on the receipt of the ticket that I got at home, and no bus came. We walked to the second stop and waited, and still no bus came. Finally, we went to the Guggenheim stop, and a bus arrived. In the meantime, we had walked and asked locals about this bus service for about an hour in the summer heat. I would definitely guide your passengers better on how to meet up with the bus to best start the tour. Also, there were no earphones for tour, so the passenger conversations in the other languages around us were VERY distracting. The sites were great though.
